Questions & Answers

Can this be installed on top of osb?

Can this be installed on top of osb?
Asked by: Bereneni
The most current ANSI standards for tile installation (A108 - 1999) specifically exclude OSB. This is not to say that tile cannot be installed reliably over an OSB subfloor; however, there is significant debate in the tile industry regarding the conditions necessary for a long-lasting successful installation. The allowable ambient moisture level, extent of moisture related swelling before tiling, blocking and bracing and many other issues are still being debated. Each installation materials manufacturer has their own criteria and proprietary methods and requirements. Some backerboard companies will warrant installations using their products over OSB; however, their specific methods must be followed. Note: thinset manufacturers do not recommend installing ceramic tile directly to OSB. Refer to the TCNA Handbook for recommended systems that include OSB, and follow manufacturer's literature for instructions and cautions.

Does the color go through the tile or, if chipped, will it be very noticeable?

Asked by: Steve
The tiles are dark all the way through. A chip wouldn't be extremely noticeable.

Is this ada compliant? What color grout looks best?
Asked by: Bunnyclover
I didn't like the reviews on the Walnut grout (everyone said it was too light when it dried). Also based on the reviews, I tried to find New Taupe and couldn't find it in any of the stores in our region (even though stores showed the Prism in stock they couldn't find it on the shelves). I had the tile guy coming and had to get something quick, so I went with MAPEI Keracolor 25-lb Gray Sanded Grout and it matches great (they have several gray versions, you have to find the one that is just Gray).

So customer was totally excited about this new floor and once it was installed the tile looks warped or curved. We laid it and a bunch of the pieces are tapered at the ends. Have a claim in now.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible!!! BEWARE!!! This tile is terrible. It shifts and the grout pops up. Also very hard to clean in all the little ridges. I hate it. Just installed it a year ago thru 2000 sq feet of kitchen and I am ripping it all out and installing hardwood. Waste of money. Looks cheap. I hate the way it hold dirt and after just mopping it .. It dirty again. (See pictures)

This product only makes sense if you need a slip resistant floor for your bathroom or if you are a senior citizen prone to falls and with osteoporosis. Otherwise, the tile is so rough that it is uncomfortable when you walk barefoot. Kind of like hostile architecture but for your feet. This didn't seem so bad when I was looking at a tile, but it was overwhelming when the whole thing was installed. Seriously, I can't image who (other than a person over the age of 65) thought this was a good idea from any angle. No way I would install this if I had a toddler. Way too rough for soft toddler knees and hands.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LifeProof Sierra Wood I love, love my floor. I spent a couple months searching for the perfect kitchen floor. After several big box store searchs, tile samples and countless researching reviews I came across these LifeProof Sierra Wood porcelain floor tiles at Homedepot and knew I finally found my floor. I used Keracolor S Gray grout by Mapei from Floor and Decor. It was a color match personal preference. Wasn't fond with the grout color options at Homedepot. I get so many comments on how beautiful my floor looks. Someone actually thought it was real wood. The only negative is that 1 to 2 boxes had several broken pieces. (1 box had over half the box broken) However, I did buy extra boxes just in case. So check your boxes! I definitely would recommend the Sierra color, its gorgeous! The tiles look like a beige and gray color mix. I would love to share some photos of my kitchen floor, but I don't see an option to upload a photo.

I do not recommend this for a kitchen for sure, a bathroom and shower maybe. The name is misleading when you think of a product as Lifeproof. It chips easily. My husband dropped a small jar of salsa and it cracked rather largely. I was disappointed. I thought it would be tougher for something that claims it can be used outdoors. We have only had it a month. No telling what it will look like over the years. It is beautiful once laid but I would not use it in high traffic areas or rooms that get a lot of use. And I'm skeptical that it will look good over time. It also chips when cutting but I managed to camouflage that with grout and as some others said, not all the tiles are flat.

The color is a perfect blend of grays and tans, which is what I wanted. I am disappointed in the quality of the tile--specifically, it is not perfectly flat and the edges seemed "warped" after it was installed. My contractor says that's what happens in this price range. I have never purchased this size of rectangular tile before, so I never expected this. Now that it is installed, I can live with it in the small basement bathroom. I would not recommend it for a larger, more prominent room in the house. Still love the color and wood texture--very realistic.

I purchase these tiles for my kitchen and I will have to say that I am very disappointed. During 1/4 of the way of the floor installation I asked my contractor why some floor tiles were uneven from each other and he stated the floor planks themselves were not cut the same and some were slightly bent. I doubted his words and figured it was poor workmanship on his end, however later in the day he brought me into the kitchen and showed me what he was talking about. He placed 2 tiles next to one another side and the difference was apparent. Then he placed them both on a flat surface and you can see how some of the tiles were slightly bent/curved. He did the same thing with approx 6 other tiles and 75% of the them had one problem or the other. By the time we noticed this it was too late to change the floor without costing us more. Seriously hope that at the end, I can get over this.

After my deck was screened in, I used this product to tile over the (20 yr old) wood decking. I couldn't be happier. Everyone thinks its real wood! It looks fantastic; I used Sable Brown sanded grout. As pointed out in other reviews, it does chip; in 250 sq ft, I made 6 very small chips in the edges of some tiles while cleaning out the thinset between the tiles with a screwdriver. I covered the chips with a light brown (nutmeg) paint and you can't see them at all. I particularly like the skid resistant, matte finish of the tiles. It makes them look like teak or some other untreated wood. I also found that the tiles tend to chip the slightest bit cutting them. In some instances I filed the edge a little and put a little paint over the edge; again, you can't tell. I'm very pleased with this product and recommend it highly.
