Questions & Answers

What would be the best tool to cut these?

Asked by: Hairwiz14
I used a jig I built for my skill saw which I used for cutting vinyl siding, similar to chop saw. I used a fine tooth plywood blade. I turned the blade around on the saw so it was not "ripping" the vinyl flooring. Worked great, cut smooth, no ripping. Also, used a table saw for the long cuts. This stuff is great to work with. I cut a few pieces with a utility knife like is shown on some U-tube videos. If I had to cut it all like that I don't think I would be done yet. Hard on the hand. You had to score it several times before it cut enough to break it.

So would I need to buy rolls of underlayment to lay down underneath this even though it has an underlayment attached??
Asked by: lonewolf
Our contractor told us that it depends where you are installing it. We are doing a residential basement where the concrete is likely to be uneven causing the floating boards to "slap down" when stepping on an area that may be lower than surrounding areas. Thus, he recommended a soft underlayment.

Take Home Sample - Sterling Oak Luxury Vinyl Flooring - 4 in. x 4 in. is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 3568.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from installed this into a bathroom and it was the first time I had ever installed flooring like this ... installed this into a bathroom and it was the first time I had ever installed flooring like this myself, although I have helped other people previously. Watched a bunch of videos and knew it was something I could do. Going slow it took me 4.5 hours to do a 45sqft bathroom. The product was simple to install once you got the hang of tapping it into place. Feel confident installing this for people of any level of experience. The one negative I will say is that it was not as easy to score and snap as it seemed to show in the videos. I was using a guide and yet my blade was still traveling off my line and it seemed no matter how many times I scored it or how deep went, it took some force to break pieces off. Towards the end I just used a jigsaw to make the cuts. For $170 worth of flooring this was a great investment into the bathroom, add in a vanity, some paint, new toilet, linen closet and I was able to upgrade/update my bathroom for $600.00 by shopping clearance for the vanity after the summer.

I installed this flooring in 1100 sq. ft. of my home. I wanted flooring that would be water resistant and I liked the fact that the planks had an antimicrobial backing attached to it. The planks were not easy for me to score and snap, it was very resistant to scoring with a razor knife. I found that it was much easier and faster to use a table saw and cut the planks, especially when flooring such a large area. I used liquid floor leveler first before installing the flooring. Highly recommend using leveler if the floor is not level as they stated. It worked very well. My sister even helped with some of the install. The flooring job turned out very well.

I picked the scratched stone look for my bathroom floor and installed it myself. To me, it looks a little more like wood than stone, but I love the way it looks either way. It was easy to install, I just need a jigsaw to cut the boards around my toilet. I had a little trouble scoring and breaking the small pieces, so I ended up using the jigsaw to cut those pieces as well. It's been installed for about 4 months, it's very easy to clean and I still love the look of it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scratches We were so excited to install this flooring in our new home. And really felt like we were splurging by going with this brand...but knew that we needed something that would last and hold up. Our first disappointment was the lack of different patterns in the boards. There were maybe 4 or 5, so you have to pay special attention to ensure a variation in the board pattern/print. But it looked great once we got it installed. Sadly, we we were crushed days later when carefully moving a piece of furniture and a HUGE scratch went down our hallway. I realize this is our mistake, but The description of durability in this flooring is misleading. And our previous flooring that was the cheapest Home Depot had to offer didn’t ever get a single scratch. Within a month of installing this Lifeproof flooring we now have several scratches. They are very visible and were done effortlessly by toddlers! I imagine we will have to replace within a year because it will just look like trash. So disappointing.

We decided to go with this product for the thickness, durability and ease of installation even though it is more expensive than most products we were looking at. We also purchased the recommended tapping block for installation. The product was professionally installed. We were happy with the look. However, we have the cleaning people come right after contractor left to clean the house. We were appalled to find several spots where the floor top layer seem to be scraped off or failing. We contacted Home Depot immediately prior to move in. We were told to contact the manufacturer. We filed the problem report with manufacturer on their website as directed by Home Depot. Despite the claim of 100% lifeproof, no one from the company responded to our request. We wrote follow-up email and contacted them again. Still no answer. Very disappointed with the manufacturer and Home Depot. False claim about their products holding up and unresponsive to request for answer.

My husband and I just installed over 600 square feet of this flooring in the kitchen/dinning and formal living room of our home. This product was very easy to work with. It does score and snap like advertised for cutting pieces, but you will got through a lot of blades. We also found using an oscillating tool for difficult cuts was very beneficial with this flooring. As far as durability it seems to be holding up well - slight scuffing from moving the fridge back into place, but nothing deep and really only visible when looking at it in reflected sunlight - just looks like dull smudges so nothing earth shattering. We have a small dog, she doesn't like the flooring at all, but only because she has trouble getting traction. The key is in the prep work - make sure you are preparing your subfloor for before putting this in. check for high and low spots and take care of those a head of installment. I am very happy with our finished product

I loved the look of the floors, however they scratch at the smallest touch. Our builder had the floors protected and covered during the construction of our house. When we uncovered them we found tons of little scratches and found that if you even just walked on the floor wrong with clean shoes you could scratch it. Part of the surface laminate even started peeling on a few boards and this is only about 2 weeks after installation so we thought we had a bad batch. We contacted the company regarding their warranty and they denied it saying that it was installation error or some such nonsense. They even claimed that it was because the floors weren't covered. We obviously had to remove the covering so the inspector could see the scratches. In any case after paying over $20,000 in flooring to this BS company they declined everything. I would never buy from this company again strictly based on the way they handled the warranty and the issue, let alone the poor quality of the floor itself.

While it took a couple of tries to get the second row started smoothly and tightly, after that, installation was fairly easy and the floor looks great. The interlocking vinyl pieces locked into place with moderate tapping, using a rubber mallet (rather than the nylon-coated hammer described in the instructions). It took about four hours total time to complete a 10' X 12' space; including time to cut pieces to fit. I finished the floor on Aug. 14, 2018. Cutting the pieces only takes a straight edge (I used an aluminum T-square) and a sharp blade (box knife) to score along the cut line and then snap the tile apart. It does require two tools specifically made for installing these tiles - a 3" X 9" X 1/2" tapping block and a pull bar (for wood or laminate flooring). In addition, there is an edge moulding of matching color to finish off the the seam where the vinyl tile meets other flooring or at a doorway.
