Questions & Answers

How long does it take to become well-done compost?

Lifetime Dual Bin Compost Tumbler, 100 gal. capacity. Model # 60072
Asked by: Yosemite1
The warmer the outside air temperature the faster it composts. Putting your composter in a location that gets all day full sun is much better than a shaded location. Even during our mild Northern California bay area winter, the composting process slows to a crawl taking a couple of months to produce a batch. Try to fill it no more the 3/4's otherwise the contents won't turn over, breathe and compost as efficiently as they should. You'll be tempted to "top it off" when you see how much the contents shrink during the composting process. Doing this will add another couple of weeks to a month to finish the batch.

How high do you fill it? Can I cover the aration bar?

Asked by: littlelulu
I filled it just to the aeration bar, it holds quite a bit of material. If you add much more than that it becomes hard to turn the barrel.

It appears everyone is very positive about this composter with the exception of rusting parts. I am wondering with this very consistent problem, if Lifetime has moved to using non-rusting metal parts. Even with obviously exceptional customer service in replacing parts, it would even be better to not have the problem at all.
Asked by: sunhouse
I have not seen any rusty parts? I guess if you water the aerator bar in the middle it may rust. I just water the contents and not the center bar. I am very happy with mine so far.

What kinds of things do you put in to be composted

Asked by: deb
I use it as a mixer/storage container. I put black potting soil, Black Kow manure, and Peat. I do throw in grass clippings or any veggies I picked too late.

Customer Reviews

100 Gal. Dual Bin Compost Tumbler is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 240.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Failed product and failed service I bought this product ~2012/2013. Was very happy to assemble it - other than some difficulty to attach a few corner caps, the assembly was straightforward and smooth. And the composter did look very nice in my backyard! However, pretty soon, issues started to appear here and there. Basically, majority of the metal parts started rusting. Well, the composter needs these metal parts to hold them together and operate. Such parts, by default, should be able to withstand the outdoor weather with no major issues for certain amount of years. But no, within months (instead of years), metal parts race to fail one by one. Particularly, the lock mechanism is hard to operate within a year and it became a struggle every time we needed to lock/unlock the lid. In about three year or so, due to broken corner brackets, one drum has been deformed and basically nonoperational; soon after that, the hinge of the other drum was broken and basically made turning the drum impossible. So other than occasional throwing something in the half broken drum (but not able to turn), basically the composter has been sitting there for nothing for several years. Unfortunately (for us), we wasn't diligent enough to check its warranty in time and a few months ago, while cleaning and sorting stuffs in the house, we got a hold on the its user manual and realized that it has a warranty period of five years. By this time, our product has been past that five year period, and we contacted Lifetime's customer service anyway to see if we can get any parts. Were gladly offered replacement parts free as a courtesy of good service. A set of hinges and some others parts were delivered within a few days. Unfortunately (again, for us), when trying to repair the drum, I found that the locking mechanism has been totally rusted and won't move at all no matter how I tried! I even bought a WD-40 rust remover specifically to no avail. So I called Lifetime customer service again. But, no, I was immediately told I need to pay for any parts this time around - basically they were telling me it was a mistake last time. Of course, It's something like $45 just for the metal locking mechanism! In summary, 1. The product was a total failure as all metal parts are prone to (and eventually majority will) rust. It can't withstand the outdoor environment of its designed use. 2. We were initially very happy with the free replacement of a few parts, probably due to **staff mistake**. The customer service rejected any claim of warranty when we needed more parts to complete the repair; instead, the customer service is charging exorbitant amount of money. A basic fact: the parts had been broken well within the five year limit. 3. We paid *several hundred* bucks for this product, with a total yield of about two wheelbarrows of compost. With mainly plastics and cheap, low quality metal parts, Lifetime sells it with quite a fat profit margin. How about cut your paying customers some slack and just provide the parts even its past the 5 year limit? You know, not everyone is able to memorize and check often the month and year when this particular product was bought and when the warranty is about to expire and still remember to request a warranty. Hello, there! In five years, majority households probably buy 50 products in average that likely have the potential to request a warranty service. 4. Don't buy it. Lifetime might have new, not-so-easy-rust metal parts for current product, or not. For several hundred bucks, you will come out way better, economically, just buy the most expensive, "organic" garden soils.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty Good product. Overall, this is a good product, but it does have a couple of flaws. The basic design and construction is very good. The unit is sturdy and stable, and the bins rotate freely. I have had mine over a year now, and I agree, the catch mechanism does tend to rust and jam, and definitely should have been made rust proof. By definition, the environment for the catch is going to be damp and corrosive. I fixed (sort of) the issue by spraying the mechanism with WD40 when needed. So far that has kept the catches operating. The other issue is the locking pin. The one on the right just snapped!. This is the bin I use for kitchen scraps, so it got much more use than the other one. In the kitchen I collect organic waste such as peels and cores in a counter top container. When it fills, I empty it into the compost bin, and rotate the bin a few time to mix. I usually stop the bin by letting the locking pin re-engage as the drum rotates. Apparently this is too much for the pin to withstand.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't ask for anything more! We got ours from Costco years ago. It sits on our deck. We alternate between one side that's 'baking' and the other get new material. About every 4 months, we dump out the side that's been resting, sift out the big pieces that still haven't completed (avacado pits, mango seeds), and off we go. Our garden boxes love the material. Anyway, Lifetime has been great as well. A few years ago, one of the hinges broke. Sent an email and we had a new set the next week. Last month, one of the latches finally seized up. They sent out replacement the next week as well. Really can't ask for better service/support.

Tricky to assemble, instructions are strangely difficult to read despite claiming to be ‘ American’ product, and a step or two are actually missing. However, once assembled, it is working great. I will have my first batch in about another week. Customer service was on the spot with fast free replacement when I needed a spare part that broke because I was initially installing it wrong. I recommend this composter for ease of use, and awesome results.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Rusted and won’t close I liked this composter a lot at first. Now the locking mechanism on both sides is so rusted it’s very hard to get them closed completely. I thought I had it closed enough yesterday (but evidently didn’t) and and of course it dumped half baked compost all over the place when I turned it. What a mess. I’m going to call the manufacturer to see if their lifetime warranty is, in fact, that. It’s only about 5 years old.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quickly breaks down compost, interior prone to rust After 6 years of midwest winters and summers, the interior parts have all rusted and some of the corner squares have fell off. I highly recommend it, I just wish the life cycle was a bit longer. I will continue to use it due to the large investment and how quickly it breaks down my compost. Overall much easier to use than my other compost systems.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Liked it while it lasted I have had my composter for 4+ years. It did take a long time to assemble. My pins to hold the barrels in place broke pretty shortly after we purchased it. All of the metal inside of the barrels began rusting shortly after we started using it. When it rains water gets inside of the lid, so when you tumble it you can hear water sloshing around inside of it. The closing mechanism has always been stiff but has been functional and served it's purpose, until today. One of the bars of the latch snapped off when I tried to turn it. It has composted a lot of soil over the last few years, but I don't think I will purchase this model again.
