What kind of propane tank is needed for this unit? How long will it run on a tank?

Asked by: Porter
I used one twenty pound tank a month. I light the Weber charcoal grill on average 3 nights a week and lite the wood in the fire pit 4 nights a week. The grill is less than 5 minutes a time the would pit 20 mins a time average unless the wood was really wet.

Is there an adjustable pilot light or do you have to keep lighting it each time you move to another area?

Asked by: jay1

Inferno Propane Torch Kit is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 358.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from simple tool that works, with slight modification This tool really cranks out the heat. We used it to light some brush piles, in the rain, and it had them going very quickly. The down side of this tool is that it doesn't have a pilot light. If you let go of the trigger valve, the flame goes right out. I would like to see an adjustable needle valve inserted between the flow valve, and the trigger valve to bypass the trigger valve. There is a quick and dirty work around to this. I removed the trigger valve plunger, and used a very sharp chisel to drive a very small groove across the valve seat. This allows a small amount of gas to bypass the trigger valve, even when it is closed. This acts as a pilot light to keep the flame going when the trigger is released. Start with a small groove, and increase size as needed to keep the pilot light lit. The flow control valve still turns off all gas flow when needed. This modification significantly improved the usability of this tool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needle valve leaks & safety valve a pain It is pretty decent price for the wand, hose, and trigger valve but the needle valve leaks and appears to be intended to do that so safety valve at tank end of hose does not lock up. If the gas is not flowing it builds enough pressure at safety valve to cause lockup and then would never work so needle valve has to leak, BUT how much gas am I wasting this way??? The safety valve locks up too easily anyway and then you are instructed to and need to shut of tank and clear line. HASSLE! I ended up replacing tank connection safety valve on hose with a adjustable regulator. I also replaced needle valve with gas ball valve. Works good and could even be borderline flame thrower now if turned up all the way. MUCH BETTER! In hindsight I would have been better off buying used wand and added the hose, valves, and connection myself, but still would have only saved me about $5 so i guess it is not bad deal for wand, hose, and squeeze trigger valve.

Upon initial attempt to use this torch, I was very disappointed that I could only get an occasional burst of fuel, was unable to get it to light. I went back to my local Home Depot store to ask the folks there if they had similar issues. A very helpful associate explained that the newer propane cylinders have a safety valve on them, and I should only open the cylinder valve 1/4 turn. I went back home, tried this, and VIOLA! Works fantastic! Amazingly, I also took another look at the operating instructions, and SURE ENOUGH, the instructions also mention only opening the cylinder valve 1/4 turn! Lesson to all users..... ONLY OPEN THE CYLINDER VALVE 1/4 TURN! This will save a LOT of frustration, and will give you an awesome torch!

Not comfortable or convenient for continuous or ambulatory use: the lever valve is off or on (no pilot flame), so you must reignite the gas and hold the lever. No regulator means high BTUs, but your tank will freeze quickly. Works great and priced right.
