Questions & Answers

Can Pl S30 be used for sealing an RV roof vent

Asked by: Dynam
Read on RV forum that Polyurethane Sealant was the "sealant of choice" for use on RV's. I Then read MaxxAir install guide and it says, "Caution: When installing your Roof Flange, only use caulking/sealant compatible with the flange (plastic product) and the roof surface. DO NOT use materials containing solvents such as or similar to Xylene, Toluene... Silicone Sealants such as GE Silicone II (non-paintable) used for outdoor applications have proven to be suitable for this installation." One of the ingredients for this sealant is Toluene. Maybe the amount in this is not enough to be an issue but I will use something else.

Will this work on a metal roof? under gable trim or the pipe flashing

Asked by: manyhats
Absolutely! It was made for pipe flashing and other splash guards. It works with wood and plastic but best with metals of similar heat expansion coefficients.

Roof repair

I have a few and it's a metal roof after I put a piece of metal down what's the best caulking to use to seal it
Asked by: Browngirl
In general, polyurethane sealants like the PL Polyurethane Roof and Flashing Sealant are used for roof flashing purposes. 100% silicones can also be used but you really need to know what the type of metal is you are using and whether or not this is a flashing situation or fixing a leak somewhere. Be careful, once silicone is used there is not going back to another type sealant if the fix was not successful. can i apply this while its raining?

Asked by: Jon
For best results surfaces must be dry, clean, free of dirt, moisture, loose particles, and other foreign contaminates. It would not be recommended to apply this product in the rain or while it is raining.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Use it for everything. Been using this product for years here in Colorado and have just recommended it to some friends who live outside of Woodstock,VT. Not only do I use it for roofs but customs built showers to seal the HardieBacker seams, plumbing issues, calking the fins on new window installs, sealing cracks in foundations and so on. My elevation in Colorado is 7K' and the sun is pretty brutal on building materials. Unlike silicone you will not be able to rip this off only after a year and I never had it leak. Can't think of anything it doesn't stick to yet although I've wanted to try it on Tyvek. The only thing you need to be aware of is that it takes twenty-four hours to set up so it can be a little messy. Rather than try and smooth things out if I add too much I wait until it dries hard and then trim off the excess. If you use a battery calk gun watch your speed as I have blown apart the tubes from the pressure.

When finished I used this to seal joint at shingles/siding on the gable up there. Worked out perfect. Hope it lasts 30 years! I ran a thick bead, prob about 1/4 to 3/8" thick all the way up. Takes a few tubes if you got a long run(s). Doesn't go as far as things like caulk or silicone would. It's tar though, it's not supposed to. Anyway, unless something causes it to deteriorate unreasonably soon, Id use it again for sure! Good stuff.

This Loctite sealant is a little pricey but seems worth it to prevent water leakage around wood & flashing at my home. The actual sealant product is very thick & somewhat difficult to get out of the tube at first. But when you get it out of the can it really covers the areas with a good thick coat that seems to hold well.

You'll have to cut the tip in order for it to come out thick and easy, otherwise you will have a difficult time getting it out.
