A:  Thank you for the question. Loctite PL Window, Door & Siding Polyurethane Sealant can be stained with a solid color stain once fully cured. Full cure can take 7-14 days or longer but because you are using an oil-based stain, we recommend waiting at least 21 days for compatibility reasons. This product does not accept semi-transparent stains very well.

Q:How long does this need to cure before it is paintable with latex exterior paint?

        Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. Painting polyurethane sealants should not take place until the sealant is fully cured. The estimated cure time for Loctite PL Polyurethane Window, Door & Siding Sealant is approximately 7 days @ 78°F (25°C) and 50% relative humidity, based on sealant bead ½” wide by ¼” depth. Keep in mind that cooler temperatures and heavier sealant beads will increase cure time significantly. Painting these sealants too soon may cause tackiness or pigment separation in the paint.

A:  Ordered online and picked it up in store easily. It worked great on our outdoor project, which we sealed the gap or crack between the stucco wall and the metal structure.

          Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. The Loctite PL Polyurethane Window, Door & Siding Sealant is not recommended for use in underwater applications or permanent water immersion situations. You might look at the Loctite PL Marine Fast Cure Adhesive Sealant or the Loctite Marine Epoxy as possible alternatives depending on the nature of the application and if the areas can be exposed, clean, and dry during application and cure, prior to water emersion.

Deceptive. Cure time not on tube. Takes a WHOLE WEEK to cure!
I was looking for a premium outdoor caulk to use on the wood play set I am refurbishing for my daughter’s birthday. I settled on this caulk because it had good expansion properties and longevity, and was paintable. I paid twice the price for this sealant as some other caulks. There was no skin time or cure time on the packaging, but I was not concerned, since it said the caulk is paintable. I should have been concerned. Loctite deceptively leaves the cure time off the package, because it takes A WHOLE STINKING WEEK TO CURE. After I applied the product, it wasn’t skinning, so I had to search and search and search online to find this information buried in the tech specs (on a different webpage than the product info page). The product takes 24 hours to skin and 1 entire week before it cures and is paintable. Well, thanks Loctite for making me miss having this play set done my daughter’s birthday. Putting out a caulk that takes an extremely long 1 week to cure, but purposely leaving that information off of the product labeling, is unconscionable. Most paintable caulks are paintable in 24 hours.

Pretty thick and not as gummy as other sealants I have tried. So far the adhesion is good on both substrates and no leaking.

Not for the faint of heart! This sealant bonds to Azak type PVC trim with its solvent makeup. It’s terrific to work with because of its slow curing time (7 days). But man, you have to be accurate, neat, careful when using because if you get any overage it turns ugly. Work with a can of mineral spirits and a case of paper towels. I’m happy with the results.

I used about 12 of these on my last project. I used it anywhere there was going to be significant exposure to moisture. It seems to stick to anything I have used it on. I have used many types of polyurethane sealants and adhesives. The adhesive types set quicker and harder, the concrete types flow slower and are harder to apply. This one applies easily and dries very flexible and tough I even used it to install go-board in a shower - really put a lot on and squeeze it out from between the joints so you are sure it has completely covered it, then knock it down with a putty knife. It flows ok with the putty knife. (don't leave any high points, they cannot be removed). There are a couple of drawbacks, the first one is that it takes several days to set properly, the second is that it cannot be cleaned off non-porous surfaces, if you get it on something, wipe it off, that's about the only choice.

Using the PL S40 to seal new James Hardie siding I installed. Also found it so easy to use I’m doing the rest of the exterior getting it ready to paint. Easy cleanup and flows nice.

              This stuff wears like iron
First, the cons. 1. This stuff is extremely hard to work with. It forms and feels like glue. Silicone is easy to work with a wet rag or even a damp finger. Not with this stuff. It will stay sticky on your hands for days. 2. Seven day cure time. 7 days!!! Now, the pros. 1. This stuff lasts and lasts. I've been a homeowner since the early 90's. I've tried silicone and latex calks. They are pure garbage. Even with the right prep, they just can't handle the wear and tear of being outside. PL S40 wears like iron. I don't know the life expectancy, but it's greater than 8 years and I would estimate closer to 12. I've never seen it fail, or even think of failing. Amazing stuff!! I just finished a restoration of an 85 year old wood garage door. 40 panels later, and I'm fully confident that door will good for the next 10-15 years based on my prior experience with this product. Do it once. Do it right. Use Loctite PL.

I rated this product 4 stars because of ease in applying and it appears to be good quality. I sealed some minor cracks around my window. The recent rain we had a week ago showed no signs of leak. Good product.
