Q:Does it work on High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) or Polypropelene? What color is it when cured?
by|Nov 29, 2020

Answer This Question

A:  It will have problems bonding either plastic due to the low surface energy of PP and PE plastics. These plastics can be fused with hot filler rod or another piece of the same plastic. It dries to a rather non descript clearish translucent color with some yellowish overtones

by|Nov 30, 2020

A:  Thank you for the question. The Loctite® Plastics Bonding System is designed for small projects and dries clear. It can bond to HDPE or Polypropylene. However, it is not designed for repairs needing high flexibility or for gap filling applications or for repairs that may be under stress or subject to vibration. If any of these conditions exist, the glue may only be a temporary fix in which case you may need to seek an alternative product.

Q:Will this product glue a decorative plastic ring to a painted steel door ?
    by|Jun 27, 2020

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. The success of using an epoxy for this application will depend upon a few variables. First the composition or type of plastic. Second the structural soundness of the paint on the door. Last, the expose of the door with regards to direct sunlight. Plastic and metal have different coefficients of expansion /contraction. If the plastic experiences any undo stress the bond can fail. If the ring you intend to install is designed for the application described you may wish to consult the plastic ring manufacturer for further assistance.

    by|Jun 29, 2020

A:  Simple question, complicated answer. It will depend on the plastic material of the decorative plastic ring AND how well the paint has bonded to the steel door. The easiest way to answer this question is to try it and see. But if the paint film fails and the epoxy remains bonded to the plastic ring and the paint, you will now have an area of your door with exposed steel and no paint exposed and rusting and needing to be repainted. If the paint is a factory applied primer and catalyzed lacquer or enamel, then the paint will be very tough and well bonded and unlikely to fail in such a fashion. If the paint was applied by a homeowner or even a professional who did not use a two part primer or otherwise carefully prepare the steel surface prior to painting, it may fail by pulling away if the decorative plastic receives any stress (even from direct sunlight heating the door and plastic at different rates each day if it is an exterior entrance door. If you decide to try the epoxy plastic bonder, scuff the areas that will be glued using a non woven scuff pad, Green is a typical color and medium abrasive. Do not scuff through the paint film or the plastic decorative trim underside if it is coated or plated. Just enough to roughen all surfaces. To keep the scuffed areas under control mask off the surrounding areas with masking tape and scuff inside the masked areas. Clan the areas with a dampened paper or non woven towel using rubbing alcohol 70% and above or a strong spray cleaner and then a water wipe down to remove the detergents. Let dry and apply the plastic bonding adhesive to both surfaces in a light film. The clamping part will require you to either tape it in place to clamp until the adhesive is sett OR try a piece of wood as brace to hold the decorative trim in place. The door will be out of service until the adhesive is very well set up. Do not allow the plastic piece to move while it is curing or the bond strength will be reduced. Good luck!

Q:Will this glue a plastic microwave handle back on to a plastic microwave door?
      by|Apr 2, 2020
      2 Answers
      Answer This Question

A:  You must ID the plastic to be sure. I can guess that the microwave handle and trim plastic is of the ABS family but only you can ID the plastic to be sure. If it of the polypro or PE family then the answer is no the plastic bonder will not produce a good bond. For ABS and PC (polycarbonate) plastic, it can work well if the plastic parts are totally free of grease and fingerprints before bonding them back together. I owned a GE over the range microwave oven and the plastic trim parts were always breaking and cracking. Turns out the heat from a gas cooktop was shortening the plastic life due to heat exposure and no amount of glue would hold those heat aged parts together.

A:  Thank you for the question. It is possible the Loctite Plastic Bonder could work but you must first know the type of plastic your trying to bond. This product does not work with all plastics. Kudos to the to community answer provided from 6 hours ago for providing excellent detail regarding types of plastics and their experience.

Q:can this be used to repair pvc water line
        by|Nov 24, 2019

        Answer This Question

A:  Frank, PVC used for drain waste and vent is sold in larger diameters at all home improvement, landscape irrigation and plumbing supply outlets and is commonly repaired using a inexpensive solvent cement. You would typically cut out the damaged section and insert a replacement section of the same diameter and wall thickness. These pieces are designed to mate tightly and are permanently bonded by applying a layer of solvent cement to both surfaces before final assembly. Use sandpaper to clean up any rough edges and make sure to test fit all pieces before glue up. For a potable water line under pressure, the procedure and solvent cement are the same but because of continuous water pressure and contact, the need for more careful prep and cutting skills is increased to avoid leaking joints under pressure. Same process of identifying line diameter and fittings to be replaced, buying new replacements and using solvent cement to assemble the pieces to create a watertight repair.

        by|Nov 25, 2019

A:  Thank you for the question. The Loctite Plastic Epoxy Plastic would not be recommended for repairing water lines under pressure even though it can bond to PVC pipe. In addition, the product is not recommended for making repairs to potable water systems including potable water lines and should not be used. Not knowing the nature of the repair you may wish to consult a plumbing expert

The yellow material in the dispenser will not flow. Don't buy.
Bought it three weeks ago. First time I tried to use it it would not flow evenly out of the plunger dispenser. Basically the yellow side was so viscous that you ended up with nothing but the clear material. If you pushed hard enough on the plunger to make a little of the yellow material flow the it would dispense a large amount of clear material but the plunger would just bend and the yellow side would only ooze out in unusable quantities. Crap product. I've used different Loctite products forever -since I was a kid building cars - but no more. I'll stick with JB Weld from now on out. I guess the problem is poor quality control and an unwillingness to recall bad product after it has shipped.
