Q:Is this product compatible for filling cracks in asphalt?
by|May 19, 2023
1 Answer
Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. Loctite TITE FOAM Big Gaps would be compatible with asphalt but if the intended use is to fill cracks, for example in an asphalt driveway, then this product would not be well suited for use in traffic bearing applications and may not meet your expectations. This is not to say you cannot try but you are responsible for the results obtained because there are no guarantees for this purpose.

Q:I purchased 4 cans of Loctite Big Gap... I tried to apply it to inside of the door of my pump house... would not stick to the smooth surface of the inside... Obviously it wasn't supposed to be used to fill a 16" gap! What should I have used instead?

    Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. Loctite TITE FOAM Big Gaps is not designed to be used as a spray application for large area insulation purposes but instead to fill gaps, cracks, and holes in and around the home. The foam is dispensed in an extruded bead form, and it will stick to surfaces. A 16-inch gap is rather large, so it sounds like you tried to apply too much foam all at one time to a vertical surface. This is not to say you cannot try but it would need to be applied in layered bead foam allowing each layer to set up before applying the next. Too much foam on a vertical or overhead surface will fall off before it sets.

A:  Yes. You must also be on one foot wearing flip flops

      by|May 27, 2023

A:  Thank you for the question. Yes, Loctite TITE FOAM Big Gaps must be used in the inverted (upside down) position when initially dispensing foam. Using this product right-side up allows propellent to discharge prematurely, making it impossible to dispense foam properly. You may be able to dispense the product right side up, as long as it is very well shaken before and during use, and you first begin dispensing while inverted. For more information on how to use our product, you can check the product Technical Data Sheet at www.loctiteproducts.com

        by|Apr 17, 2023

A:  No, actually it works better if you hold it up right.

          by|Apr 16, 2023

A:  Absolutely not, it helps to hold it as vertical as possible

              Answer This Question

A:  Thank you for the question. Loctite TITE FOAM Big Gaps Foam Sealant is water resistant, but it is not waterproof and should not be used in water submersion applications or areas of continuous water contact.

This is a great product, we had a large area to close up on our home and this works perfect. Be careful, this will expand quickly, but once you get the hang of it, this is a great product, if you want to close up large holes. Easy to use, make sure you clean out the tube for easy use next time

Locktite Tite Foam for Big Gaps is a new version of the existing competitive product that some of us are familiar with – Great Stuff. It is advertised as being 4 times denser (4 times more cells/cm3) than the competition, resulting in fewer voids. It is also advertised as resistant to air, moisture, and pests; bonds to most building materials; more resistant to weather elements without becoming brittle; sandable and paintable; stands up to movement (flexible); fills gaps up to 3 inches. (I will be making comparisons to Great Stuff as the competitive product throughout this review.) (It was a gray, wet, 65 degree morning when I evaluated this product outside, although the 12 oz. can was at 73 degrees.) When testing the product, it dispenses from the can with slightly more control and then expands more slowly. I did not fully depress the trigger. I experimented with a small bit of foam on my finger and it doesn’t appear to be as sticky and hard to remove from the skin as the competitor. So, if you have to work in a tight spot and know things could get messy, this might be something to think about. The cured foam is quite tough and flexible, more difficult to tear or puncture than the competition, bounces back when compressed, and is bright white. I filled a spray can lid to about 80% and the rate of expansion after curing was more than 50%. The trail of foam I sprayed expanded from about 1/2” diameter to 1 1/2” diameter. The foam expanded and cured at 73 degrees and 77% humidity for about 2 hours before testing. Due to the denser finished product (less expansion) I don’t know the volume of a simple void(s) that can be filled with one can of Locktite versus the competition. I previously used another expanding foam product to fix some leaking 2” and 3” diameter holes in the poured concrete walls of the basement in my 100 year old home. I prepped the surfaces of the holes the entire depth of the wall, sprayed the foam to 80% of the volume of the hole, then positioned a board covered with non-stick plastic wrap over the hole to stop the foam’s expansion out of the hole, forcing it to seek out cracks and crevices and create a tighter denser seal. Using the same procedure, I would have preferred using this new Loctite Tite Foam for this application. I would suggest that this product NOT be used on door and window installations. A less dense, softer foam specifically designed for this application is necessary so as not to jam the door or window operation. This short video is quite informative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyXb1lIyRRM Negative: More expensive than the competitor. Made in Estonia. P.S.: It is a shame that so much of this product type is wasted due to the one-use can/nozzle design. However, If you don’t use the entire can in one application, following these steps will allow you to use the remainder of the can at another time, and, in my experience, more than once. Remove the nozzle from the valve/can, separate the straw from the nozzle and set aside to cure. While pointing the valve away from you, carefully clean the valve/can by spraying into the valve with 3 or 4 short bursts of automotive brake cleaner – Wear Eye Protection! Clean the straw and nozzle with small tools/wire after they have cured. You are welcome.

This product just did not work for me. Our home is on a raised foundation and I wanted to fill gaps where rats and mice could get under the house. We could not get this product to come out of the tube and when it finally did, what a mess we had! It shoots in a thin stream; however, expands a lot shortly after. This can can only be used once as the foam inside the tube hardens.

I got this Tite Foam insulating foam for a specific purpose, and was surprised at how many uses I found for it after the first job. The original use was to fill a huge gap between the foundation of the house and the siding. Some years ago, chipmunks pushed out one of the corner bricks (a half brick shaped like a triangle) and used it as part of their highway around the yard. Well, of course that let mice get into the walls. I tried a number of things, including pushing the brick back in, setting up multiple stones and bricks to hold it in place, and every time, those chipmunks just kept pushing the things back out. I finally found this Tite Foam for big gaps. Exactly what I needed! I shot some in there until the foam swelled out through the bottom. The picture here shows the foam immediately after application. The next day, it had swelled four times bigger and curled out. It looks like some crazy art installation. I was tempted to leave it alone, but only the chipmunks would be able to enjoy it. Then I went around and found other gaps where the old landline wires and TV cables came into the house. I shot this stuff around there and then went back inside to check the temperature at the baseboards. All the hot spots and places where drafts had come in (along with ants and whatnot) were entirely closed. Then I went to the brick steps at the front and shot the foam into the gaps where the mortar has come lose. There were some big gaps, but not anymore. No more rain and critters slithering into there to further damage the front steps. Five minutes of effort, a few cans of Tite Foam, and you've got a lot of value for the money in this product!

This insulating expanding foam sealant by Loctite fills gaps to seal out air, moisture and pests. It looks like styrofoam, but is flexible, spongy, durable, doesn’t become brittle, bonds to most building materials and withstands movement. I used it mainly to fill a hole in a cinder block on the side of my front porch to keep bees out, and it worked great. It expanded a lot more than I thought it would. I wound up using the whole can at once for various other small gaps also, so I can’t say if the leftover portion of the can would clog the screw-on nozzle tube. Regardless, it did the job really well, and I’m pleased with the results.

This works great! I experimented with it first, because I didn’t know how much it would expand. I sprayed some on a piece of cardboard, and 20 minutes later it looked about the same size. Then I sprayed some in a flowerpot and took a picture immediately, and then a picture 20 minutes later. I could definitely see that it had expanded. In another flower pot I sprayed enough so that after 20 minutes it expanded enough to fill the pot. I left it sitting in the sun and came back a day later, and it had expanded a lot more. I had also stuck a 1 x 1 stick in it while it was still wet, and now I can’t pull the stick out, so it is definitely adherent and strong. It’s very lightweight, like Styrofoam, but not full of lumps like styrofoam. It cuts like a hot knife through butter, and I took a picture of the cut surface. I also spray-painted it, and the paint covered without any problem. My use for it is a little bit unusual. I needed it to seal the gaps in a waterfall/water feature for the pond in my backyard.

A little goes a long way. That's what I realized yesterday after I used it to fill in some gaps between some studs in my basement. The instructions say to fill it 50% full, and I thought that's what I had done. But clearly, one of use was wrong. However, it was not big deal as I was able to easily cut away the excess after it had dried. Now I'm left with a nice, tight, dense fill in some otherwise difficult to insulate areas.
