I found this confusing to use for multiple tests, and the results were so off and variable for the same garden that I ditched it and sent for a soil test kit from the Cooperative Extension Service which will cost only around $18 and provide more info.

I used the kit to determine the needs for fertilizers on the lawn. The kit was easy to use with good instructions for the procedure. I got the results I needed and have treated the lawn with the fertilizersindicated by the test kit. The results look encouraging.

My house is in an area where endless tons of heavy clay were used as fill during construction, so I had to remove a lot of it and replace it with "topsoil" and peat etc. for a little kitchen garden. End of the day, there was no way to know just what I had put together .. I've gardened all my life but results were sad and I was especially concerned about the pH levels and the nitrogen. Got the soil test kit this year ... easy directions, easy to do, and I'm pretty sure I've identified the problems.

Let my soil solution sit for 3 hours and the nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium didn't change colors. I let the solution sit for 24 hours and still no luck. There were chunks of something floating in the chambers.

I had a hard time telling the difference between the different stages. Unless it's "excessive", as in too much fertilizer, the color change just wasn't enough for me to see clearly. I did not test the ph as it is done differently than the other 3. Also, I had to wait almost 24 hours for the soil to settle out of the water as I have heavy clay soil. I will be sending my soil into a lab to get it tested next time.

Used this kit on just one dirt sample from my backyard. This is the first such test I've ever attempted. It was more difficult than I expected, but appears to have been well worth the effort. The yard's grass is now flourishing. However, it is almost mid-May and growing conditions have been very good anyhow. My soil sample's Ph level was at 6 the minimum,, which was believable. The other tests showed complete depletion, which is somewhat questionable. It takes time and is somewhat complicated to gather each soil sample, prepare it, and apply the chemicals. I advise reading the directions carefully before beginning and re-checing them as you proceed to get credible and reliable results. It takes several weeks for the soil additives prescribed to penetrate the ground sufficiently to warrant repeating the soild tests. So, a followup test is important to validate the process and cause and effect results. Twice within 3 weeks, I applied 2 inexpensive bags of Lowe's pelletized lime (raise Ph) and milorganite (replenish nitrogen) with a Scotts edgeguard(?) rotary spreader. I had to bump the recommended spreader setting down quite a bit to get the coverage claimed on the bags. But, I have had to do that anyhow with the typical scott lawn fertilizers in the past. Perhaps my square footage calculations need rechecked. The real tests of success will be at the end of the summer after the typical hot and dry months and next spring, after the deer and winter have also done their damage. This kit from Home Depot was very reasonably priced and had much better reviews than Lowe's competitive product. It was likely less expensive and less time consuming than sending samples to the state college agricultural center in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

Worked great. Still takes time to read everything and get the process right. At some point as I remember it says to use the provided eye dropper yet it was not in my kit. I felt like a chemist. But it worked great, oh did I say that before?
