What will happen when using LED bulb lights? will the light comes on or not? I don't really care about the dimming feature.

Asked by AJ December 17, 2019

Answer

The MA-L3T251 is rated for 300W of incandescent/halogen lights only for the lighting load. Lutron does not recommend using LED lights with this device as there will likely be performance issues with the LED light, such as flickering, strobing or ghosting.

Is there a version of this which will work with LEDs?

Asked by Tom October 4, 2019

Answers

Unfortunately there is no stacked dimmer/switch controls that Lutron has which are rated for use with LED lights. Lutron recommends incandescent or halogen bulbs only with this device and other stacked button controls.

The dimming portion of this control is only rated for up to 300W of incandescent/halogen lighting. If this rating is exceeded, it would quickly overheat the dimmer and cause it to fail. Due to this fact, Lutron would not suggest using both of these bulbs with this control.

Can you use this switch for LED lights

The MA-L3T251 is only designed to control 300W of incandescent/halogen lighting loads and switch a 2.5A fan or lighting load. Due to this fact, Lutron would not suggest using LEDs with this control.

If my halogen bulb starts to fail/burns out will that cause the switch to look like it too has failed?

I have not personally seen a halogen bulb start to fail. They typically just failed. Anyhow, just to make sure, you are aware the small toggle switch to the right of the main light switch is a "dimmer." It will retain whatever dimming setting you last used. So, if someone purposely or accidentally lowered the setting, it will look like you have a dim bulb. Press the top portion of the toggle until you get the full brightness. You may also have a low end trim set up on your switch. You can look up directions to change the trim setting to high end. Hope that helps.

Currently, Lutron does not offer a dual wall box control that is compatible with LED’s, the lighting load would need to remain incandescent or halogen bulbs. We have passed your inquiry on to our team as we are always considering options for additional products.

Does the dimmer part of this switch work with a light fixture that uses xenon bulbs?

Asked by Tonya December 2, 2017
1
Answer

Lutron would suggest determining whether the xenon lamp is an incandescent style light with a filament or if the lamp is actually more like a neon/cold cathode type lamp in order to determine how it will dim. If the lamp is an incandescent style with a filament, it could be dimmed with regular line voltage or with a low voltage control. The MA-L3L3 is rated for 300W of incandescent/halogen lighting and has a minimum load of 40W on each circuit. Please feel free to reach out to our Support Team at support@lutron.com or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661 for more information.

How many poles are there on the switch? 3 on one side for the timer, and 2 on the other for the ...

You're thinking about it the wrong way. There are basically two single-pole devices in this bundled unit. The top device is a single-pole dimmer with a screw on each side; the bottom device is a single-pole timer with a screw on each side. There is also a grounding wire coming off the bottom. I suspect it connects to each device internally somewhere but you only need to attach that ground wire to a ground wire for your box. Note that even though it's a nifty little 2-in-1 package, each device must be attached to its own hot wire. Unlike the ancient single-gang double-rocker switch that I replaced, you can't just feed a hot line into one switch and let a connecting tab pass power from one device to the other. My solution was to run two pigtails off the incoming hot wire, then attach one pigtail to the hot screw of each of the devices. This allows them to work independently of each other, so the fan will stay on for (however long you set it) even after you turn off the light and walk away. And that, of course, is the whole point.

Yes, since the wattage is under 200 watts this product should be able to control both.

Easy install, works perfectly
This is the second one I bought. I intsalled one a year ago and it has been great, so it was time to do the other bathroom. Quick and easy to install. Now the lights can be set to the brightness desired. I don't think about the fan sucking the air conditioned air out all day long with the timer. Very happy to have this. Now if the kids would stop clogging the........

Home Depot sent me a used item. It did not work properly, turns off with a minute left then turns back on: not good for the fan motor!! Also the screws were already loosened up: clearly someone else’s issues which now became mine. I contacted Lutron directly. They are supposed to send me a replacement.

We are sorry to hear about your experience and glad that you have already reached to our 24/7 tech support team. However, as they likely explained, the timer turning the fan off and then back on is a simple warning that the timer has one minute left. The warning will not do any harm to your fan. If you have any additional questions, please reach out to us again at customersatisfaction@lutron.com, or call us 1-844-LUTRON1. We're here 24/7, so please call us any time!

Looks good.....functions oddly
Like every other Lutron switch I have installed (I have many of the Maestro dimmer switches throughout the house), this single-gang, dual-switch unit looks very high end and has a nice feel to it. The light switch with dimmer works well as expected. The timer switch, which I use to control a vent fan in the ceiling, is another story. When I press the button the fan comes on. Good start! I can use the rocker button along the side to adjust the fan run time up and down in 5 minute increments. That's great! Here's where it's so weird: The fan runs for the set time period, but when it reaches one minute before the end of the cycle, the switch momentarily (less than a second) cuts power to the fan and then puts power back to the fan, which then runs for the last minute and finally shuts down. I contacted Lutron customer support about this, thinking I surely had a defective unit, and they replied with: "The symptom you're experiencing is normal for this control. All of our timers have a 1 minute indicator on them which turns the fan load off when there is one minute left. Currently, there is no way to turn this indicator off. We're happy to hear that everything is working properly!" Thinking that they must have misunderstood my recounting of the switch behavior, I sent a clarifying email back to customer support to which a different representative replied: "Yes, this feature is an indicator or warning that there is 1 minute left until the timer shuts off. This is a feature that is included on all are countdown timers. Since this control would only be wired to lights or electronic fan, the shutdown and startup on the fan is not put excessive wear on the fan or light." Maybe I am taking crazy pills, but why would I want the switch to give me a one minute warning that the timer is going to expire? I specifically set the switch to run for 5, 10 , 15, etc. minutes, so I want it to simply run continuously for the specified time. I need one indicator - the remaining time is Zero, and your fan has now powered down. If anyone can explain the possible benefit of this "feature", which apparently the engineers at Lutron included intentionally (with no way to override), I am extremely curious to understand this. In the meantime, I have spent $60 on a very fancy looking device that very commonly makes me do a double take when the fan momentarily cuts out. Side note: Starting motors with full supply voltage is hard on them (look up "motor inrush current"), so for the longevity of any electric motor it is ideal to limit its number of starts as much as possible. Because of this timer switch, the fan motor now has to start twice each time I let the time run out. Just a very weird design. 2 out of 5 stars because it looks cool and fits in a single gang space.

The switch is not very user friendly. It tends to dim the lights every time the switch is activated. When the timer on the fan expired, the fan continued to receive intermittent power that would start and then immediately stop the fan. I replaced this switch with two separate switches.

It took me quite a while to get around to installing this after I received it, but I absolutely love these features! They're exactly as described -- and as praised by many other reviewers -- on the Home Depot site. The instructions were very clear and detailed -- though printed horribly small on the included warranty/instruction booklet. Maybe it's time to change from full instructions, warranties, and disclaimers printed in 1pt narrow font for sixteen languages to simple cards with larger (easier-to-read) lines that say, "full instructions, warranties, and disclaimers can be viewed on our website at {company.com/product/model/language/document.pdf}" in those sixteen languages. Installation took me 30 minutes instead of ten, but I'm a DIY guy not a pro and I wanted to be especially cautious to avoid frying this thing. Now, having done it once, I could easily do it in ten minutes or less. It's that easy!
