Product Overview

The Maestro Countdown Timer helps you save money and energy by automatically turning off the lights and fans after a preset time. Using the Maestro Countdown Timer on bathroom exhaust fans can reduce the chance of a costly mold problem, and timers attached to garage lights can add an extra layer of safety when you return home at night. Use the large tap switch to turn the timer on and off, and use the rocker on the side to set the timer to the desired time-out option, anywhere from 5-60 minutes. Softly lit orange LEDs indicate the time remaining before turn-off. Save energy by using the Maestro Countdown Timer in closets, attics, basements, and other low-traffic areas to ensure the light is never left on for a long time. Exhaust fan must meet 0.3-amp minimum load requirement to be compatible; substitute MA-T51MN (item #742099) if the exhaust fan load is minimum 0.05-amp. Coordinating Claro wall plates and accessories sold separately.

Can I use this timer with Panasonic FV-0510VSL1 WhisperValue-DC 50/80/100 CFM Bathroom Exhaust Fan with LED Light in White. Thank you

Asked by Bulik2018 December 15, 2020

Answer

The MA-T51 has a minimum load rating of .3 amps. Many newer exhaust fans do not meet this minimum load requirement. Instead, Lutron suggests the MA-T51MN, which has a minimum load rating of .05 amps. The MA-T51MN does require a neutral connection. Lutron recommends reviewing the wiring in the wallbox to see if a neutral is present.

Answer

The MA-T51 is rated for 300w incandescent/halogen lights or 3 amps for general purpose fans. Currently at this time, Lutron has not tested this timer with a heater and cannot guarantee compatibility. Thank you for your inquiry. Please reach out to our Support Team at support@Lutron.com or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661 for additional assistance.

Will this switch work one side of a 3 way switch setup running a bathroom fan with specifications of .03 amps and 26.9 watts? Thanks

Asked by Jwb5858 October 28, 2020
1
Answer

The MA-T51 is a single pole only timer control. Instead, Lutron recommends the MA-T51MN, which requires a neutral connection and that the second switch be replaced for a companion (MA-AS). Review the wiring diagram here for this timer: https://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocumentLibrary/368-4493_Page_18.pdf

What is the difference between midnight and brown? Im trying to match dark antique bronze plates and switches.

Answer

"Midnight" is a satin black where as "brown" is a glossy finish. Please reach out to our Support Team at support@Lutron.com or by phone at 1 (844) 588-7661 if you would like a color chip set to help in the color decision process.

Will this work on a Panasonic fan with less than 3 amps?

Asked by Plumber July 4, 2020
1
Answer

The MA-T51 has a minimum load rating of .3 amps. Lutron recommends confirming the Panasonic fan would meet this minimum load requirement. Lutron also offers the MA-T51MN, which is a neutral based version of the same timer. The minimum load for the MA-T51MN is .05 amps.

Can this timer be used for an attic fan?

Worked perfectly, nice color match (plenty of colors to choose from), simple to install, easy to operate and nice features: - override for turning full on/off. - slow flashing light to which time is in use. - fast flashing light, final minute count down. - indicator lights NOT overbearing bright. - indicator stays on last timer setting used. - ease of switching between times. We love these units....we installed 3 of these to replace our standard on/off switches in our 3 of our bath rooms.

More than one model
Lutron advises on their web page that if you have a low current draw then this model may not work correctly (ours turns fan on and off repeatedly) so for low wattage applications they recommend the MA-T51 model.

40 Watt Minimum Load
I should have read the reviews, but the package should also indicate it has a: 40 Watt minimum load. Below a 40W draw this switch will cycle on/off in short bursts. Does not work for my Panasonic WhisperQuiet bathroom fans (10.8W). Shouldn’t have thrown the packaging away now I’m stuck with a unit that I can’t use. 2-Stars instead of 1 because it works as advertised with my Hunter light/fan combo.

Response from LutronFeb 3, 2020
We're sorry to hear about your experience, Fish. The Maestro MA-T51 countdown timer has a minimum load requirement of 0.3A for fans and 40W for incandescent or halogen light bulbs. Some new, energy efficient exhaust fans draw less energy and do not meet that 0.3A minimum load.  If you have a new fan that doesn't meet the 0.3A minimum load, you might try the Maestro MA-T51MN countdown timer (Home Depot sku: 204655149). This timer will typically work better with newer fans because it has a 0.05A minimum load requirement for fans and 5W for incandescent or halogen light bulbs. However, the MA-T51MN does require a neutral connection (which allows for the lower minimum load).

The switch was easy enough to wire in, the only problems I experienced involved the limits of my own house wiring. Controls the fans in our bathrooms for humidity control. Being able to set the time as 5, 10, 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, and have it repeating, as well as turning it on to run until manually turned off is a great advantage.

Ordered the timer to control fan in our bath room. Unfortunately, it did not work the timer when was on gave a spin to fan (model Nutone ZN80), but just for a few seconds then fan stopped. Installed it on outdoor light line. Works well there! Buy but with reservation that it may not work for you as advertised :\

Dear Valued Home Depot Customer, We have reached out to the manufacturer and their reply is, "We are sorry to hear that, Mira! This timer does have a 40W minimum load so your Nutone fan may not be meeting this requirement. If this is the case, we would suggest using the neutral-based version, model MA-T51MN-WH. Or if you would like to discuss this particular application more with a specialist, give our Support team a call at 844-LUTRON1. We are available 24/7 so feel free to call anytime, day or night.  Steve @ Lutron Support "

This timer switch looks much better than many of its competitors. I also like that you can just tap it to turn it on, and the previous time is restored; double-tap to keep on is also a nice feature. I've only had it for a couple of months, so I can't yet speak for its reliability, but it seems well-made.

Note: This timer requires a load of at least 40 watts to operate properly. It does not require a neutral (white) wire when you wire it up. I purchased this timer for my bathroom fan. I had installed a 100 CFM Delta Whisper quiet fan, quiet and low power consumption. When I connected this timer to the fan, it started up, then slowed down, then cycled fast and slow every second or two. I checked the directions again, and found an issue in the troubleshooting section - this timer needs to be connected to a fan that draws at least .3 amp or 40 watts. I removed the timer and connected it to a different, larger fan in another bathroom. Here it works OK. Strangely, as it reaches the end of it's time interval, the fan stops, then runs for about 10 more seconds, then shuts off. The unusual operation and wiring arrangement of this timer leaves me a little uncomfortable. We'll see how long it lasts. I think the outside packaging should indicate that this timer needs a 40 watt load to function so the customer knows if it will work.

Great timer switch
I have a number of Lutron switches and have been very pleased with them. This timer switch replaced a standard single pole switch wired to a vent fan for a guest bathroom. The push-in terminals made the installation a snap, but there are also screw terminals if you need. The timer allows you to set it from 5 to 60 minutes, plus just on, using the rockers on the side, which are easy to see from the indicator lights on the front of the switch. I set this one for 10 minutes and it was accurate from my test. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that the push plate on the front of the switch was upside down when I took it out the packaging. But luckily I was able to pop it off and flip it around. Overall this is a nice timer switch.
