This is nice, high-quality seed. It only contains safflower seeds, and no stems or other junk. As the package promises, it is surprisingly unattractive to squirrels. Whereas we usually have two or three squirrels on or right below our feeder, when we filled it with these seeds, none came at all. Unfortunately, it's rather unattractive to our local (Florida) birds as well. Occasionally a dove or a jay would stop by, but we had to fill our feeder with a mix of this, plus sunflower and millet seeds in order to get a decent crowd of birds coming around. Perhaps if you live somewhere with more grosbeaks and such, you'll have better luck than we did.

Our birds seem to like it; squirrels, not so much! This seems like a good quality alternative to the sunflower-and-millet mixes that we buy locally, and when I saw that it says it's "not a favorite of squirrels," I had to give it a try. We've got squirrels that will monopolize the feeder and never give the birds a chance. The birds aren't fighting over this stuff, but we have had steady business with tufted titmouse, cardinals, and the usual lineup of grackles, song sparrows, and house sparrows. More importantly, it's the birds that are getting it. The squirrels have stopped by to check it out and then gone on their way. It's been almost a week since I filled the feeder, and it's still 1/3 full. Normally, the squirrels clean it out in two days. Highly recommended.

This is a nutritious, no waste single seed bird food. It features NutraSaff safflower, which is an organic, chemical-free hybrid safflower with higher nutrition content than white safflower: Along with 15% more oil, 25% higher protein and 30% higher fat, it has a much thinner hull that makes it easier for to eat and digest. The whole bag is clean and consistent, with no contamination or great variation. Birds that regularly eat safflower seed: Black-capped chickadees Black-headed grosbeaks Blue jays Carolina chickadees Downy woodpeckers Evening grosbeaks House finches Indigo buntings Mourning doves Northern cardinals Purple finches Red-bellied woodpeckers Rose-breasted grosbeaks Tufted titmice White-breasted nuthatches Other birds will sample safflower if readily available but grackles, blackbirds, and European starlings will typically leave these seeds alone. This helps to keep these feeder territorial birds away. Squirrels are not fond of the seed either. These seeds are best offered in large hopper, tube, or platform feeders for the larger species that prefer them. Ground feeding will accommodate doves and quail. The bag has stay fresh technology to prolong shelf-life. Overall, this is a very nutritional mix that many birds like and most will try. It is not popular with squirrels and territorial birds and has a little waste. Birds like it and readily consume it.

Wasn’t a big hit with the birds :( We had high hopes for this organic, chemical-free safflower that was supposed to be easier for the birds to eat, but our sparrows and songbirds weren’t interested. They definitely prefer the white safflower seed that we’ve been providing for them over the past year. We used the same feeder in the same location, but after a week only one grackle gave it a try, and he mostly scattered it on the ground. YMMV, but we’ll be going back to the old seed. Lyric 12 lbs. We frequently try different seed for the birds to try to attract a lot of different birds. The Lyric Golden Safflower seed has a thinner hull which makes it easer for the birds to eat and I like that for our smaller birds. While we always have a lull in the feeding whenever we change the seed, it did not take long for the birds to come back to this seed. The sparrows never stopped feeding but the cardinals, woodpeckers, chickadees and juncos took a few days to come back. Once they did, the feeder seemed to be constantly busy. I like the 12 pound bag, which is easy to handle and pour into the feeder and the bird seed appears to be popular with the birds. I really like the fact that the Golden Safflower has a higher nutritional content than the White Safflower, which we have used frequently. The birds also do not seem to throw this seed on the ground like they did the White Safflower. That is important because feeding our feathered friends can become expensive if the birds don't like the seed and throw it out of the feeder. We don't have a squirrel issue so that has never been a problem. This is a seed that we will continue to use after this first bag is gone.

This Golden Safflower bird seed is one of the best as far as quality! We use this seed to mix with our main seed to incorporate a bit of variety, and to extend the use of our main seed mixture. We've been filling bird feeders for a long time now, and have used all kinds of bird seed...Some great, most not so great. When we come across a great brand and selection of seeds, we make note, and use it. I love this Lyric seed, and have been using other types of Lyric seeds...All of them providing the same level of quality throughout. Love this seed, and obviously the birds do as well. Highly Recommended.

Golden Safflower Wild Bird Seed has a wide variety of seeds for all different kinds of birds. With twelve pounds of bird seed, this bag can last almost all summer. Squirrels even like it. With the different varieties of seed there is no telling how many birds one will see on the feeder. Some bird seed tend stick together when it gets wet. This brand does not.

Well I put this bird seed out on its own and the birds were not to crazy over it.I then mixed it with the current seed I am feeding them and then they ate it. I am not sure if they were just not ready for a big change like that or what. After mixing it they were fine and ate it. It did keep the squirrels out of the bird feeder. I think if I keep mixing it and slowly reduce the other then I think they will like it more.

Because the squirrels would eat all gone out fast in a couple hours.
