I have a standard tank water heater that I would like to replace with this unit. The vent pipe looks to be 3" into 4". Will this unit work with some 4" flex B vent pipe?
Asked by: Kevin
How I set the dials. First was to set the flow dial to my house pressure to see where it kicked the unit on or off for flow rate (shower and one sink on full hot). Backed it down a bit as lower flow through the unit gives it more time to heat. The summer / winter dial just brings on more burners in winter mode for colder incoming water temps. The final dial is the amount of gas used to dial in the temp (Use very small bumps on this dial, it is sensitive). My unit is consistent at 125 outgoing temp and works perfectly with my shower mixing valve set to where I like it and with another sink on full hot. I do have to let the shower run a very small bit to bring the temp down as my incoming water is already a bit warm from the units below me. Once the regular incoming water temp is flowing through the unit it is perfect.

The pilot is always lit on this unit right

Asked by: Newhomeowner
No, there is no pilot. It has an electronic igniter that is powered by 2 D size batteries. The burner only lights when flow is detected. There is an adjustment knob determines the amount of flow required to ignite the burner. I have mine set at the lowest setting.

This was a replacement for an older model of Marey tankless. there is one draw back to this water heater and that is something you need to understand. It requires 0.8 gallons of water to move though it in order to turn on and REMAIN on. This can make showering a pain in CA especially if you have low flow shower heads 1.5 gal/m . Yes it will tun on and heat your water when you have only the hot water on and fully running but if you like warm showers you have to remember that when you adjust the temperature you also adjust the amount of water flowing though the heater. If the water flow slows to much it will shut off in the middle of your shower. Even with the gas on low, with summer setting, and the flow rate turned all the way up I was getting 135* water. The digital thermostat display helps to dial in your water heater for optimum temperature and usage. the plus side of it turning off in the middle of your shower is that it encourages you to take quicker showers saving water. Be sure of the gal/m usage of your dishwasher, shower, and clothes washing machine. These can all be affected.

I was forced to replace my water heater with this tankless heater because the replacement water heater is no longer available in CA and because this was the only heater I could find that did not require 120V to power the igniter (it uses 2 D batteries instead). The first problem I had with this heater was its vent diameter is 5 inches instead of 4 inches like my old water heater so I had to replace the whole exhaust plumbing. The other problem I had was that the mounting holes are directly behind the exhaust stack on the top and the line connections on the bottom, making it very difficult to hang, especially if mounting directly to drywall. However, once installed, about a month ago, it has been operating as expected. The only anomaly is that if the hot water is turned on, off, then on again too quickly (this can easily happen when using a single handle faucet), the burner will not ignite the second time. The only way to know that the burner is not lit is by waiting for the hot water to arrive, but never does. Turning the hot water off and then on again solves the problem, but you have to wait twice as long. Also, it obviously takes much longer for the hot water to arrive at the faucet than it would have when using my old tank water heater, requiring you to waste much more water than before. I don't know what CA was thinking.

Works great - installed almost two years ago in a home with 3 sinks, 2 toilets, 2 showers, 1 washing machine & 1dishwasher. We are on a well with less than optimal water pressure and had a new traditional hot water heater in a house with a softener & whole house filter and still experienced pungent sulfer smells when using hot water to shower. After installing this tankless heater the sulfer smell is nearly gone - a lasting dramatic improvement. Since we are on a well and have less pressure than city water we did as recommended in the included instructions and ran 3/4" pipe to and from unit to maximize flow (for some reason unit is threaded for 1/2" if I remember correctly so a couple of cheap coupler/adapters were required). It took about a week of use to get flow and temperature settings as we needed to properly serve all fixtures of the house properly but ultimately we are so pleased with the price and performance of this model I am purchasing another for my father's house to replace his aging traditional hot water heater.

Not Energy Star Compliant 3. No AC needed 4. Indoor use only 5. No automated controls 6. Not power vented With the above said, my licensed plumber friend installed the unit for me, buying all of the needed hoses, adapters, and other necessary hardware, and testing all connections. Expect it to cost more than the install cost of another tank-type water heater, as the plumber will have to make changes to your present piping. If you are replacing a tank-type water heater, the space previously occupied by your old water heater should be enough, with proper venting, to mount the tankless unit and have enough combustion air to operate it. As the unit is not power vented, and has no automated controls, 2 "D" batteries are enough to enable the gas solenoid and fire the piezoelectric igniter. The front panel of the unit has 3 controls; a winter/summer switch (winter water is usually colder than summer water, and needs a "boost"), a water flow control, and a flame intensity control. This unit also features a backlit LCD output temperature display, on the front of the unit The manual is long on installation instructions, but short on explanation of how to adjust the "beast". Tank-type water heaters have a simple "set-and-forget" thermostat, which simply keeps a big tank of water at a preset temperature. On-demand water heaters must deal with changing input water temperatures and water flow rates, since it is heating water "on-the-fly".. You can think of the tank on a tank-type water as a "buffer" which modulates changes in temperature. With an on-demand unit, you modulate temperature by varying water flow after your initial setup. The lower the flow (after the activation threshold has been exceeded and the unit turns on), the HOTTER the water will get. This means that turning on your shower, which usually features a low-flow shower head, will actually make the temperature RISE while you are showering. Adding cold water to cool things off can ALSO make the temperature of your shower RISE, as it further constricts the hot water flow. These heaters all have an "efficiency factor".. the number for this heater is .82, not enough to qualify for Energy Star status - NO tax credit if you buy this unit. However, I think that the low purchase price more than makes up for the lack of Energy Star rating. The answer here is to choose the right unit for your home, start with relatively low settings, and get a feel for the correct settings of your spigots. Of all of the various sinks, washing machine, dishwasher, etc., I think the shower is most crucial, as it is the one that can turn you into a Lobster if you let it get too hot. I was going to buy a 16-liter/minute heater. They were sold out everywhere - now I'm glad I didn't. My wife and are the only occupants of a 1-bathroom home. We don't usually use more than one sink, shower, or washer at a time. I chose the 10L Marey tankless unit for the combination of low price versus a replacement 30-gallon tank-type heater (which would have cost twice as much to purchase), and savings in fuel consumed over time It didn't hurt that most of the tankless competition cost 3 to 4 times as much. Why so cheap? See # 1. above. (I didn't know this at the time, and only found out after the unit was installed, as NONE of the included literature alluded to the country of origin.) I found the best initial setup to be with the summer/winter switch to winter (It's January), the water flow control to MINIMUM, and the gas flame intensity control to about 25%. I get water at about 125 degrees with the minimum flow necessary to activate the heating flame while showering with a bit of cold water. The water at the sinks can get a bit hotter. You will have to experiment a bit, especially in the shower. Conclusions? 1. It works 2. This 10 Liter/minute unit is more than enough for a 1-bathroom home 3. It will get HOT if you set it that way - can produce up to 160-degree water I have only had the unit for about a week. I will update this review if possible as time goes by

Installation was pretty straightforward, two water lines, one gas line and a vent. Clicks on immediately after water turned on one third the way open, shuts off immediately after water turned off. Adjusts water temp pretty easily, about like a conventional heater. Puts out plenty of hot water for one bath home and doesn't take alot of water being turned on to start so I still can use 1.8 gallon per minute sink and low flow shower head. The winter switch kicks in two additional rows of gas on the burner for extra winter heat. The long brass screw on the bottom with no mention in the instructions is the pressure relief valve. Only had it going a couple weeks but really like it so far and now I have room in laundry for storage where the old heater lived.
