Questions & Answers

why does the engine surge all the time?

I've had and used my mower for a few months. It surged right from the beginning - brand new out of the box. The mower sounds like it's running out of fuel all the time. It cuts the grass just fine.
Asked by: ShoveIt
I starting running Gas that doesn't have 10% Ethanol and the surging stopped. Here is a link for gas stations near you. http://www.pure-gas.org/

Light Weight?

Is this mower very light weight? I need to mow a somewhat steep grade hill side and need something that pushes easy. I have a self propelled already but it is very heavy for this use.

MTD 20 in. 125cc OHV Briggs & Stratton Walk Behind Gas Push Mower is rated 2.7 out of 5 by 89.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome little guy My toro has been around for years, but I kept ripping the pull cord out, I borrowed my son -in-laws mower, and basically laughed at it, it looked like a toy, I thought ; what the heck am I gonna do with this? Boy was I surprised; it's the bomb! Easy start, lightweight, easy to push and I was done in half the time it took with the toro. I bought one at the Home Depot. Great price, don't judge a book by its cover. I plan on taking the advice of other owners regarding gas and additive, taking care to read instructions, and buying a cover for it.

I was leery about purchasing this machine with all of the negative reviews I've read on it, but I have been pleasantly surprised by it. I use this mower to mow .58 acre, two to four times per month during a season. This is the second season I've used it, and I had a slight hiccup with it. I filled the machine with gas (After changing the oil) to begin cutting my grass. After 18 pulls, I thought the mower had given up the ghost. Before I returned it to the store, I checked the spark plug contact (Found a new gripe), which was in good condition, checked the air filter, which was in good condition also. I then looked around the engine exterior for any signs of leakage or damage, and I found my answer. The previous season, the mower was so reliable with starting, even after running bone dry, WITHOUT USING THE PRIMING BULB, that I completely forgot that I was supposed to use it. I pumped the bulb three times and the mower started on the third pull of the recoil starter! After starting, the mower performed just as it had in the previous season. I am very happy with this reliable budget mower. I know that by now, I sound like a commercial for the mower, here are the gripes: The spark plug cord has maybe 1/4" of slack. BARELY enough slack to remove the wire. If not totally careful, I can see an expensive repair coming. On top of the short wire, this mower (As stated in other reviews) is quite revvy. It runs as if it is ready to shut down at any moment, but never does. The only time it has ever shut down on me is when I hit SUPER thick grass, and even then, it lets you know the shutdown is about to happen. Even after shutting down, it started right back up with one pull. I believe that the problems that others are having with these mowers may stem from leaving fuel in it (Deathanol can kill seals and ruin rubber/plastic parts). If possible, try finding ethanol free fuel for your mower. A friend of mine also owns one of these, but he left fuel in his over the winter and ruined the fuel system. Deathanol melted the rubbers and plastics, and the gasoline gunked up his carburetor. Another problem others may be having is the same one I had. We probably all got lazy about using the primer because the mower was good at starting without it. Many people believe the mower is dead because repeated pulls won't start it, but don't remember to prime the carburetor first. You should also store the mower in a dry place, away from anything corrosive (As per the instructions). I have to store mine inside my house (Which may be another saving factor in my favor). Lastly, the instructions state that you shouldn't use a power washer or garden hose to clean the mower. My friend did this also, which may have been another factor in his starting woes. So for the price, this mower is a winner (In my book at least).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Decent little mower! I bought this lawn mower with no expectations. I mow lawns on the side and needed a push mower for a customers back yard. I have done nothing but beat this poor mower. It's been rode hard and put away wet for 2 years and still starts every time. I like the looks of push mowers, i prefer the look this mower gives compared to the $4,000 dolller zero turn.

I was wary of this mower after reading some reviews, but decided to gamble anyway. I have a tiny yard and needed something to get me through the rest of the summer. The mower was already assembled, I just had to add the deflector and extend the handles. Took about 10 minutes. I am a middle aged woman by the way. I read the instructions completely and contrary to what some reviewers say, yes the wheel height can be adjusted. It is a bit of a pain and you need to remove the wheels with a wrench but it can be adjusted. My mower was complete, all hardware and oil included. Added the oil, primed the engine and it started on the third try. Have used it several times. It even powers through some thick growth at the back of yard. Yes it's pretty cheap, but I like that its light and it does cut the grass. That's all I was looking for. It's the cheapest mower in the store. Realize that and know what you're buying. If you have a big yard and rough terrain you might want something else, but I am fine with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from In use for 20 years Just do basic maintenance. Occasionally clean the float bowl, run it dry season end, and keep the blade sharp and maybe I get 40 years. 4 stars for being side discharge, but that was my mistake.

Well into the second season with this simple budget mower (My season starts mid February) and I am still very pleased with it. Now that my one year warranty is up, I can admit, I haven't changed the oil since I bought it. Now that it is getting older, I have to prime more than the instructions state (Instructions call for three (3) presses, I have to press mine six to seven (6-7) times, but it still starts right up after priming. Don't leave fuel in the tank after mowing (Even if you plan to mow in the near future), either drain the tank or try guesstimating how much fuel you will need for your yard. You should use only ethanol-free fuel (If available), follow the maintenance/STORAGE guidelines and I'm sure you will probably get consistent performance out of this machine. While this machine does surge a lot, I haven't had any problems mowing my .58 acre yard. I find that the surging usually begins about 20 minutes into mowing and increases until I finish (Usually after 3+ hours), but it never fails to complete the job. I have included an image of mine in action. Tried uploading video, but only images are allowed.
