Q:Is there supposed to be holes drilled in the bottom of the pond? Associate said I need to put a liner? Is this true?

Answer This Question

A:  There should be no holes in a preformed pond. A liner is not necessary, we recommend laying 2" of sand at the bottom of the hole and then bedding the pond onto that sand.

A:  No, there is not suppose to be a hole in the bottom of the pond liners. It is not true that you need a liner under your pond

A:  Mine is already in the ground. The shallow end goes out about two feet and is really only about 12 inches deep. The deeper end is circular and about 24 x 30 inches oval. I found after starting my hole that the utilites were not located correctly. I was contending with tree roots as well. I allowed the liner to sit about six inches above ground and built a rock wall around it. If you have it flush to the ground, it will be easier for all manner of animals to get in, drink, get your fish, etc. I would recommend leaving it raised a bit sloping up to the rim of the pond.

Q:Any recommendations for cleaning, e.g., how often, what to use, and how to prevent mold?

A:  Most are able to keep the pond clean by using a filter along with a fountain or waterfall to keep the water moving, which keeps the water clean. You can also use pond treatment chemicals (most are non-toxic) especially if you get a bloom of algae.

A:  I don’t like that it does that, either, but think it’s designed to be sunk into the ground where the ground would support it. I had to put bricks under that part to hold it up.

A:  I use it as a plant shelf. I set my pump at the very bottom.

            by|May 14, 2022

A:  When the pond is properly installed in the ground, it won't dip down. It will be level.

Kidney Bean Best In Very Level Ground
Overall, this is a good size and an interesting shape with a plant shelf for our small garden area. We had no interest in adding fish to our pond, so this is acceptable. Digging the hole in this odd shape was a little challenging, but taking it slow worked out fine. My only problem with this pre-formed pond, and it may be because I had to accommodate a slight slope in the garden, was leveling it. It would be level end to end and side to side at either end, but it seemed like there was some sort of torque in the middle where I could not level it. During the back-filling step, I think I lost some of the level I had, even though I kept checking. Now that there is water in it, it does not seem to be an issue, but you can see where the outer side looks more full than the inside curve.

The pond liner is basic but it was exactly what we needed to replace a larger liner that developed cracks. A little earth and sand fill rework to shape the hole and drop the line in. It looks just as nice as the previous liner but is easier to maintain due to its size. The only snag was that the liner had a dent (depression) that was noticeable when we got the liner home. I pushed that out as much as possible and the next day it was barely noticeable. I think the dent came from actions during shipment of the liner. No leaks, so all is well.

We like the pond liner BUT it came without a box to protect it from all the dings and bumps on the walls. It looked like it had been very roughly handled. Luckily we found no cuts or punctures or we would have had to returned it.

It was as described and was an easy install. So far so good. Winter will tell the true story of how durable it is. But for right now, it is just what the doctor ordered.
