I scraped the popcorn off before applying the texture. I would recommend doing it over the popcorn ceiling. It is great for hiding imperfections though.

Does this do a rose bush pattern

No, the Magic Mudder creates a more random pattern

Yes, you give around 5-10 minutes for the mud to begin to set and then knock down with a 12-in taping knife

I've tried texturing a number of ways to texture wall; using this tool was new for me and by far and away, not only the best outcome, but the easiest and least messy. I textured the ceiling and 4 walls of a smallish room in less than half and hour, it was incredibly easy. The texturing was consistent as long as the material was thinned exactly the same each time I had to refill my bucket. Clean up was especially easy too, no rollers to deal with, very little spill if any. The walls actually look professionally done. Magic Mudder certainly has earned its name!

One of the best and easiest to use tools for texturing a ceiling. I used a lot less compound than with other ways of doing it and the job looks great.

Great way to get a "knock down" texture on a ceiling

I needed to match a new dry walled ceiling as we remodeled our 25 year old kitchen and this tool helped me get the knock down effect that the rest of the ceilings in my home had. The concept is pretty straight forward and you could make your own tool pretty easily but I chose to get this one as the price was fine and it was made of easy to clean light weight materials making it easy to use. Doing an entire home with this could be time consuming and you probably would be better to spray on drywall mud and then knock it down but for one room with a about 250 sq ft of ceiling this was fine and like I said, it matched what the original builder had done in the rest of my home. I have attached 2 images to show the type texture we wanted. Be sure to water down your mud a bit and try some samples on a scrap board first. One last comment, I saw some negative reviews from so called professionals claiming this was a waste of money and they should just hire a pro. That is just silly, this tool made texturing easy and saved me several hundred dollars.

Easy to use, well constructed. Started to make my own, but time is money. Great for DIYs and renovation project. Takes a crappy wall and spices it up.

Purchased to re-surface a 12x10 foot area on the ceiling with a knockdown texture that was done poorly before I purchased the house. This worked very well. I found the secret was to thin the mud out to a much thinner consistency that it is in the bucket. Light weight and easy to hold for extended amount of time.
