Landscapers and contractors are demanding more cordless alternatives to corded and gas-powered outdoor power equipment. Makita is meeting demand with an expanding line of cordless OPE, including the 18V X2 LXT (36V) Brushless Chain Saw Kit (model XCU03PT1). With zero emissions, lower noise, and considerably less maintenance, the Chain Saw is a welcome solution for cutting and trimming applications. Its powered by two 18V LXT batteries for 36V power and run time, but without leaving the strongly-preferred 18V battery platform. And with the efficient Makita outer rotor brushless motor with direct drive system, users get high power efficiency that is equivalent to a gas chain saw. The Chain Saw has a 14 guide bar and the Makita-built motor with variable speed delivers 0-3,940 FPM for increased cutting speed, but with less noise (only 100dB(A)). It has zero emissions and reduced maintenance: there's no engine oil to change, no spark plug to replace, and no air filter or muffler to clean. And there's no need to drain the fuel for storage. Simply pick it up, load two 18V LXT Lithium-Ion batteries, and the saw is ready to use. Convenience features include a "tool-less" chain adjustments, a front hand guard engineered to actuate chain brake when engaged, an electric brake for maximum productivity, and more. Model XCU03PT1 is a kit and includes the Chain Saw, four fast-charging 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 5.0Ah batteries and an efficient 18V Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger.

Questions & Answers

Does it need an engine oil? If so, what kind and how much it need?

Asked by: VJ
No. Just standard bar and chain oil. It holds about 4oz and doesn't need filled often (only filled mine the once in 40+ hours of use and it's still half full).

This saw has plenty of torque, it will support a 16" bar and chain.

Has the 4-second auto off feature been fixed in the subsequent models? I have the '17 mfr stamp & I find it infuriating.

Is there any firmware fix to the affected saws?
Asked by: Ron
Home Depot still selling the old model with the short "auto off"... Even the 16" saw is being sold with the 4 second auto off.

I want to buy an inverter to connect to my truck battery to run the charger while out in the field. What size dc to ac inverter would be suitable to run the battery charger with two depleted 5ah batteries on it? Is a 450 watt enough or should I get 800 watts?
Asked by: Paul
Haven't seen any published run times for a pair of 5AH batteries with this saw, but have checked out a number of you-tube videos. From what I've seen, you may get 20-30 minutes continuous run time from a pair of 5 AH batteries. Another entry in this Q&A from Makita states the dual charger is 460 watts and the charger specs state it can charge 2 5AH batteries in 45 minutes. So the two sets of batteries you could theoretically run close to non-stop if you include breaks to stack the wood, take a few sips of coffee, etc. With that a 750-1000 watt inverter could do the trick, but you would have to be cognizant of your vehicles battery and run it accordingly while operating the chargers. One slip up on that and you may have a long walk home. Consider a small "tailgate" size generator and suggest it should be at least 1500 watts in case you get ambitious and need to add a second Makita charger and set of batteries.

14 in. 18-Volt X2 (36-Volt) LXT Lithium-Ion Brushless Cordless Chain Saw Kit with (4) Batteries 5.0Ah and Charger is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 54.

For example, at a normal pacing, you can charge the two extra batteries in less time than it takes to run down the two you are using. The 12 and 16 inch bars also fit. The saw develops as much power as my 56.5cc Stihl 290 without the hassle of gas.

I have used it for about 6 months , no assembly required, only bar and chain oil needed to be added. Very fast chainsaw with a 3940 feet per minute chain speed or 66 feet per second, about 50 percent faster than other cordless chainsaws. Lightweight at 11.5 lbs with batteries. The 14 inch bar length is perfect for me as a homeowner and firewood burner. Batteries last a long time with LED battery life indicators on the saw itself, very handy. I cut up and de-limbed a 20 foot by 8 inch diameter white birch on just one charge with plenty to spare(I used 2X3.0A/hr batteries) These batteries charge fast! in 23 minutes you are ready to cut again. This saw has met all my expectations and then some, I spent many hours online trying to find best cordless saw for my needs and this new model fit the bill! Love it! I also sold my old Stihl saw as I did not use it enough to warranty the fuss of keeping fresh gas mixture on hand.

The amount of torque this saw generates far exceeds a gas saw and that makes this saw exceptionally dangerous to use. This saw will saw much faster compared to a 56cc stihl saw. The anti-kickback feature does work on the saw. When I tested this saw to purposely kick the bar back the handle/counterweight engaged to stop the chain. The recharge time of 40 minutes is equal to how long you can use this saw before the batteries require recharge or changed out for charged batteries. This saw comes with the narrow kerf chain. You'll need to small file to resharpen. You'll need to check the chain tension every 15 minutes. The tension adjustment backs off about a 1/3 of a turn during use due to vibration. Add a few drops of red threadlocker to the adjustment prior to the first use (no bar oil on the screw) which helps the adjustment stay in place. This saw far exceeds my expectations and works much better compared to the new stihl battery powered saws.

I was not sure about a battery powered saw but I decided i would give it a try. It is nice not to have to pull start, idle and wait when cold. Mash the power button and engage the trigger. Cuts very well, battery life is impressively long (dependent upon use). It is nice to transport without the need to carry and extra container of fuel, just bring the extra batteries. The tool less chain pensioning feature is impressive. No tools needed to tighten the chain or install the chain when on occasion it gets off track.

I am currently trimming crepe myrtle trees and other larger trees in my yard and the chainsaw is working wonderfully. The charge lasts about an hour. That's good enough for me because I have to gather the limbs I have cut and carry them by truck to our transfer station where I can dump them. So, while I'm gone I can recharge the batteries. This is a great tool. It cuts really well and it's light weight for a chainsaw. I'm an old guy but I can use it on an 8 foot ladder for an hour without my arms getting too tired. I've had the chainsaw since Jan 8. Going to build a 14 X 20 foot shed using it to cut 6 inch beams in a couple of months. For anyone tired of a heavy gasoline powered saw or a corded electric, I'd recommend this one. Just keep in mind that the charge lasts about an hour of cutting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best in class I ran one of these heads up with several other 36v units and this one is by far the best battery powered unit on the market. If you have 18v makita stuff the batteries interchange. It has quite a few pro features not seen on electric or battery saws like adjustable oiler and metal chain rash guards. I have run more than a few saws (like 100+), and for a battery powered it can actually pull through a solid 14-16" of wood. The are nice to have for inside use without exhaust or just quick trim work. Would I be replacing my gas chainsaw with it? Not quite yet... for those cutting cord wood for heat you'll still want the gas powered so you can run all afternoon. It is an excellent battery powered saw and if I lived in town and was a carpenter or avid makita tool owner and had other tools to use with this I would get one in a heart beat!!! Great power and handling. I'm holding out for a top handle version with this new electric motor. Hurry up Makita and make me one!! Only reason for 4 star is it's not a top handle and can't replace gas life for battery life.

This chain saw has plenty of power and the batteries last longer than I expect. The saw had no trouble cutting through a good sized Mesquite tree. I gave up on my gas chain saw after replacing the carburetor twice and having it clog again. I'm happy to have a saw that starts first time every time with the push of a button.
