The result is a faster battery charging cycle which means less downtime: the DC18RA will charge an 18-Volt LXT Lithium-Ion battery (model BL1830) in only 30-minutes, and an 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion battery (model BL1815) in only 15-minutes.
My understanding, is the batteries are chip protected, plus once the batteries reach full charge, the charger stops its cycle. Ive left batteries on charger for a couple days without dire consequences.
