Out of Square
Hello, I have bought and returned two of these sets, which really sucks because the price point $499 + tax is a steal when compared to its competitors (Festool & Mafell). Both saws blades were not square to the base and could not be squared by using Makita's instructions (See attached pictures). I really wanted this saw due it its cordless nature and feature rich capabilities. However, much like Milwaukee's 10" miter saw, this track saw needs some better quality control. I just bought the Festool TS55, fingers crossed that this track saw will be good to go when it gets here. If you happen to buy one please make sure its square and please check your cuts to ensure that they are square as well.

Pricy tool but definetly worth the money. The accuracy and smoothness out of this saw is not even comparable to a table saw. I use this for professional use as a carpenter.

Review from an active DIYer: Quick Review: Great saw, I highly recommend it The dust collection worked well that was my main reason for getting a track saw. The splinter guard worked well, eliminates/greatly reduces tearouts. I did not experience any when I used it. The strips on the bottom of the rail creates enough friction to stabilize the track. I did not use any clamps and the track did not move while I made my cuts. The depth guide was easy to adjust Cons: This loses a star for me for 2 reasons. 1)The depth guide is in "mm"(millimeters) instead of inches so that can be a bother if you want to quickly adjust it in the US. 2)The cases that hold the saw and the battery charger are flimsy. Feel like they can break rather easily. They do not compare to the packouts, Tstaks, and Ridgid boxes from other brands, but they get the job done. Also FYI regardless of what brand you buy ,the blades for a plunge saw are pretty expensive, around $45+. The arbor for plunge saws are 20mm or .787" whereas regular 6 1/2 circular saws have an arbor of 5/8" or .625" More In Depth: I was looking at a cordless tracksaw mainly due to the fact that they are the only cordless circular saws that I've seen, that have a dust port. Breathing in all that dust is healthy. So I figured I'd get a track saw to solve that problem. Even though I am heavily invested in DeWalt, I opted for the Makita because of the special promotion. Prior to this I did not have any Makita Tools, they were the last major brand that I did not have, 4 batteries and a free guide rail seemed too good to pass up. I have been researching a lot of Makita's products and wanted to get on board due to their commitment to eliminating dust in the area. A lot of the tools they have a dust port and I do not see that option with other brands. The saw worked fine. The charger charged both of the batteries simultaneously and it took about 45minutes out of the box. The splinter guard did a good job of reducing tearout. There are nobs on the saw that will attach it to the rail so the saw will not come off the track if you do angled cuts. I attached my Ridgid shopvac to the dust port, the connection was loose but that is a simple fix, just buy the proper adapter but even with the loose fitting I collected most of the dust from the saw

2, 5ah batteries last about 1 hour of production style cutting. Even up to 2 hours depending on the material and pressure used to push the saw through the material. Mine has performed exceptionally well production cutting as you might do with a corded tool. I’ve done tens of thousands of repetitive cuts with this saw, running it all day for weeks on end. The saw is very accurate and the bevel cuts are equally as accurate to the bottom edge of the anti-splinter strip. The saw runs very smooth and cuts very smooth as expected from Makita tools. It comes with a 55 tooth blade and spins it 2,500 to 6,300 rpm which is adjustable with a speed dial. It feels like it keeps the speed in the cut for any given speed setting and a small green light near the battery level indicators lights up when the saw is maintaining speed under load. The available high speed, the 55 tooth blade plus the automatic speed change feature combined make for an extremely smooth feel when cutting. If you have a second pair of 5ah batteries then you will be able to have two charged before you can ever run the two installed on the saw out of power. The plunge action pivots the blade into a plunge cut on an arc from a pivot point near base at the rear of the saw. You do have to keep a little forward pressure when plunge cutting and take it slow or it will kick back. My track has a cut in it from the saw kicking back on someone. There are now about 4 inches of the splinter strip that I can’t use The saw is very light weight and easy to use. The dust collection works very well and removes almost all of the dust if the dust collector hooked up to it is decent. I’ve had ok success even with an in-expensive Ridgid shop vac. Very smooth running and relatively quiet. It has a full featured set of adjustable controls. The blade size is interchangeable with other brand’s replacement blades but Makita does use a 165mm blade as does DeWalt (I also own the cordless DeWalt track saw). Most track saws use a 160mm blade and most replacement blades are 160mm. As long as the arbor is 20mm and the blade is 165mm or less it will work well in the tool. The blade the saw comes with is has a 2.2mm kerf as do most replacement blades whether they’re Makita or any other brand including DeWalt and many Tenryu. The replacement splinter strip and friction strips for the track are easy to find and are relatively in-expensive to replace but will last around 5-10 thousand cuts and last longer when used with dust collection. They usually only need replacement from improper storage or kick-back cutting into them. The cases are great and are compatible with certain Festool cases and dust collectors with storage connections on the top. The saw is comparable with Festool tracks as well but the Makita tracks cost less and are equally well made. Overall, this saw is a professional precision tool that performs well, is also reliable, powerful and durable. I hope this review is helpful.

WOW!!! This 18-Volt 5.0Ah X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36-Volt) Brushless 6-1/2 in. Plunge Circular Saw Kit1 is amazing. There is, however, a real learning curve to master in order to enjoy all it's many features. At first glance, it appears to be a fancy circular saw. Not so. A plunge saw has a different design which removes the need for a conventional retractable blade guard, as the blade is enclosed within the machine. This ensures multiple benefits versus the traditional circular saw including: -The blade can be plunged at any point into the material you are cutting. -An enclosed blade is safer and significantly improves dust extraction efficiency.. -The saw has a smooth and flat side that can be used as a guide against a wall or the floor. -Depth of cut can also be adjusted with a simple sliding mechanism at the front of the saw. The biggest and most important difference with the plunge saw however, is the ability to run it along a guide rail or track. This is especially useful in cutting large panels in confined areas. It takes 2 18 V batteries to run. When you take your finger off the trigger, the blade stops immediately. There are so many features we have not explored 1/3 of them. The case it comes in is remarkable in itself. Well thought out design adding to the easy portability of the product. Another great Makita tool system

This is the only track saw/plunge saw I have used, but I have use corded and cordless circular saws and wormdrive saws. Although it seems like just another circular saw, it's almost a completely different type of saw. The closest I could compare it to is using a circular saw with a guide. With careful use I would say you could get similar results, but with a track saw it's so much easier and more consistent. For one there is no measuring for the offset from the edge of the shoe to the blade, once the track has be trimmed on it's first use it's place the track where you want the cut, place the saw on it and cut. The saw glides effortlessly on the track compared to a circular saw. When using a guide with a circular saw and an appropriate blade the cut quality looks the same. What I like this for is to making accurate cuts and doing it with minimal effort and fuss. Now a circular saw for me is relegated to rough cuts and framing type cutting. A track saw/plunge cut is more for trim/finish work and craft/project/furniture making stuff. The saw comes with a case for the saw and for the charger that can be stacked and locked together. They feel like brittle plastic that will crack if dropped, but nice to have a case for the saw. I have also experienced how much nicer it is to have a cordless saw, and this one has all the same benefits. Like other cordless saws I have it has a soft start and brake which i really like. But I am going to guess it is not as powerful as a corded one. But for the cuts you would use this on I don't think it's much of an issue, you could make multiple cuts instead of one deep cut. The overall construction of the saw is nice but does not have the rugged feel of most circular saws. Again the plastic feels lower end, but I don't see this saw getting the same treatment as most circular saws. All the adjustment on the saw are clearly marked and easy to use. The saw only needed minor adjustment so it did not wiggle on the track. Everything else was looked to be set square out of the box. Another surprise was how quiet this was compared to all the other saws I have used corded and cordless. The shop vac was louder. Nice added bonus I was not expecting

All I have to say is, "Wow!" The Makita 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless 6-1/2 in. Plunge Circular Saw Kit with Guide Rail is easily the best circular saw I have ever used. I have had the pleasure of owning several different circular saws both electric and battery operated. They all have their pluses and minuses, however, this new saw that is a part of Makita's new 18V LXT system seems to be perfect. It has a great combination of power, run time, and precision, especially with the included guide rail. So, if you are in the market for a high end circular saw, I definitely recommend the new Makita 18V X2 LXT Lithium-Ion (36V) Brushless Cordless 6-1/2 in. Plunge Circular Saw Kit with Guide Rail.

Did a lot of research before I purchased and I am very pleased with my decision. If you don’t want to drop the cash on a festool this is a very close second in my opinion.
