The saw would not start out of the box, no way no how. I finally give it a sniff of ether and it did fire, so I turned the idle adjustment all the way in and backed it out two fewer turns. Now it will start and run, but nothing remarkable about it. It floods easily. Definitely not worth the extra cost.

I was very excited to get Makita 20 in. 61cc chainsaw. There were a few reasons for buying this chainsaw: high CC, relatively small size, internally built in decompression valve, professional grade and reasonable price.
It started really easy, but when I pressed the throttle lever it suddenly shut down. The same thing happened several time in a row, so I had to let it run idle for some time before touching the throttle and it worked. It worked ok for some time that but this issue kept continue and then it started shutting down on low RPM’s. I could not figure out the issue and called the customer service. The rep had no suggestions and told me to either take it to their repair shop or return to the store. I needed a chainsaw, so I had to return in to HD and buy a new one. The new one I bought had the same issue with shutting down. I asked a HD rep. rentals if he knew what the issue could be. He suggested that it could have been due to a bad batch of gas. I bought premixed gas and it works a little better, but I did not see a big difference. I think that there is a problem with the carburetor settings, which causes it shutting down on low RPM’s. I am going to keep it for now (it has 180 days return policy).

Amazing quality, German Mfg. saw; starts on second pull almost always, lots of power, simple controls … the 60cc class is just less sensitive to temp/pressure / alt. then the 50cc - with a smalll weight gain. Not sure why Makita does not market a longer bar for this saw - its a Husky Small mount pattern - easy to find bars in the 24, 26” range.
