Thank you for your question. Makita does not recommend using accessories or attachments other than those specifically made for the tool being used. Please refer to your instruction manual for other compatibility questions. The BO5041 5" Random Orbit Sander, Variable Speed uses quick-change 5" (8-hole) hook-and-loop abrasive paper. 5" (8-hole) abrasive discs are available on HD.com

I think you would want a more powerful sander. I’d you used this one it may take a long time. I would rent a professional floor sander.

What sanding pads (with holes aligned for dust extraction) are recommended?

I use 3M pads with a different grit depending on the job. I use 60 grit for serious sanding and 150 or 220 for finish sanding. The dust collection works fairly well.

How in the world is there no vacuum attachment for this? Come on Makita!

This works for me the 22mm to 1" tool cuff adapter, https://www.makitatools.com/products/details/417765-1 the ID fits over the BO5041 connection and the 1" side connects to my shop vac. The 1" side is threaded, still works on my straight shop vac hose. Bonus the OD fits inside the belt sander 9403 dust port.

DOES THIS SANDER COME WITH THE BACKING PAD OR IS IT PURCHASED SEPERATELY

Really nice sander. My Craftsman random orbit sander lasted a very long time before it finally wore out, and I was going to buy another of the same model. But they don't make it anymore, so I ponied up $20 more for the Makita one. While I don't know how long this sander will last (duh) it was absolutely worth it. This sander is smoother, quieter, and makes way, way less mess (far better dust collection). It also has a very slow speed setting, which among other things is useful for gently roughing up surfaces in between coats of finish - i.e. you don't want to sand the surface and remove the previous coat. For the woodworking I do, the extra handle can get in the way, so I take it off sometimes (which only takes about five seconds). But I guess it would be nice for sanding a house or a similar application that could tire out your arm. Definitely recommended.

Hello Hobbyist & Workers, I have had many sanding projects here lately and have gone through 3 other major brand 5" orbital sanders and they lasted anywhere from 4 hours up to as long as 6 days. Now I'm talking about running a sander for hours at a time, like 6 hours straight, and only stopped to change the bag or sanding disc. (NOTE: Use the right grit sandpaper for the job and let the sander do the work, Never apply extra pressure down to try and get it to cut better ) And for the dust bag, it is amazing, it packs that little bag so tight with dust that it feels like pressing on a bag of flour. By far, this orbital sander is the best I've ever used in every way. Matter of fact, my son in law is getting one for Christmas this year that's how good they are. I attached a photo of the sander I purchased Model BO5041 variable speed model. Great price $79

This thing has tons of power and doesn't tear your hands up holding it. It has two handles you can use if you want, but it is easy to control with one hand. Some orbital sanders I can't hold for 5 min without having to stop. I used this for 3 hours straight and i had no problems.

When I first purchased this sander I wasn't sure that I would really use the handle or the variable speed all that often. You see I have been using the Makita palm grip sander for years and I love it. Turns out I was wrong. I use the handle and the variable speed all the time. The handle is nice because it easily adjust to different positions and I was surprised by how well the sander can still remove wood at the slower speeds. (they are really slow). For the work that I do this sander is great.

The "3 Amp 5 in. Corded Random Orbital Sander with Variable Speed" is a very good machine. It is the only comparable sander which offers speeds as low as 4000rpm. As a professional doing restorations, I appreciate this exceptionally unaggressive sanding potential. Most users, however, will not need this capability and can be happy with the speed of 8000rpm as offered by other manufacturers in this price/quality range. It is this fact, but also, the fact that the CORD IS NOT 8.2 FEET as noted in the specs on this page, but, rather, <7 feet (i.e. "2 meters") (see picture). This, compared with the 10 feet sported by my Ridgid band sander or my Rockwell X2 multi-tool, cannot be considered acceptable for a tool of the Makita brand and of this quality. For this reason, I give this tool only 4 stars and would not recommend this tool OVER OTHER SIMILAR PRODUCTS. Something, though, that I do like about this tool is the ability to attach it to my Ridgid shopvac with the smaller and lighter orange auto-detailing hose, the large black hose being too stiff and heavy for my taste. The "teapot-spout" dust port can be fitted with a simple #14 O-ring and then the end of the auto-detailing hose pushed over it. It functions exceptionally well, is longer, lighter and more flexible.
