Question for a Makita Rep: Reading some of the 1 star reviews posted on the HD web page about defective drill portions separating from the 1/4 inch hex bits makes me reconsider buying this set due to safety concerns... Considering Makita's excellent high standards of craftsmenship with all of their products, what could have caused some of these drill bits to separate from the Hex Shanks as reported by some of these customers? How is the drill/bit/screw portion attached to the Hex bits? Are both pieces soldered/welded together with industrial high heat soldering/welding irons or are they made/manufactured by melting metal material then injecting it into drill bit hex shank molds as one piece?
Asked by: MJP
Just got this today, I noticed that the hex shank appears to be attached to the bit with what looks like a pin (as opposed to the competitors "pinched" - those divot you see at the hex shank). Sizes 1/16 - 1/8 are secured with one pin; sizes 9/64 - 1/4 have two pins opposite each other. I just cannot tell whether those pins goes through the bit itself. 5/16 to 3/8 the shank are machined from the bit.

As other reviewers have said, the bits are great, but the plastic holders are very tight around the bits. There is a fix, however: 1) Remove all the bits that are being stubborn. 2) Find a 1/4" hex key (allen wrench), as this matches the size and profile of the quick-connect end of the drill bits. 3) Place the hex key all the way into each slot. Work it in and out of each slot a few times. 4) Test the fit with the drill bits. 5) If it's still tight, put the hex key back in, and twist it gently to widen the hole. Do this until you get a good fit on the drill bit (firmly in place, but not requiring excessive force to remove). This was a bit annoying, mostly because Makita (in my experience) is better than missing a detail like this, *even* on a cheap Black Friday tool. I'm still giving it five stars because the bits are beautifully machined and work great, and the case is acceptable... at least once it's been properly adjusted.

I bought these cheap bits to use in my little 12v hex driver, just as a matter of convenience. The first time I used one, I tried to drill through some 1/8" thick brass. I got about half way through it before the bit grabbed and the flutes started to unwind right before my eyes. I would say that these must be made of butter, or perhaps cheese, wrapped in some shiny gold foil. Makita - I have no idea why you would put your name on these because it is causing me to question my power tool purchases.

These are a night and day difference to me. Drilling through 1" thick particle board was very fast w/ the 1/2" bit. Used the others and was able to drill holes quickly. Can't say about longevity for now, but these are good bits for home DIYer. They're a bit hard to get out of the case. I thought I was going to cut my fingers a few times.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from worst bit i have ever gotten I got this bit because i needed to replace some of my okder bits. I have had nothing but headache using them. One bit snapped off, one bit actually came loose because the item that holds the bit in place got lost when i tried to drill into a 2x4. The 3rd bit was the one that got the job done. Shake my head.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good but not great The mid to larger size bits work great, not so much the smaller sizes. Some of the larger bits wore out because i tried using them to drill through steel which isnt what their meant for so they arent bad for the price
