Is this engineered flooring protected or can we put a waterproof on it?

Asked by Shelby February 1, 2021

Answer

The Malibu Wide Plank Hardwood Collection is sealed with 7 layers of the latest super low gloss urethane finish with aluminum oxide, providing protection from everyday wear and tear, there is nothing you can add to a hardwood floor to waterproof it. This floor would be considered Water Resistant. If you review the definition of "water resistant" = able to resist the penetration of water to some degree but not entirely, most hardwood flooring would fall under this category, however key is how long the water, spill, liquid stays on the floor. If you spill water, drips from dishwasher, or track in water from outside etc, solution would be cleaning/drying up the spill. If you clean up the liquid within a reasonable timeline, there should be no issues. if you ever have a flooding in your home, then even though you decided to purchase a "Waterproof" flooring option, the installation would also need to be waterproof. If there is a major flood in your home, more than likely homeowners insurance would need to be involved based on monetary amount it would cost to attempt to salvage floor, do water remediation, re-install a new floor, rip out damaged floor etc. Hardwood Flooring is the flooring of choice among the majority of homeowners, is extremely durable, easy to maintain, and an excellent investment in your home.

Can this be used in kitchens and bathrooms? I need to know if it is moisture resistant.

Hardwood Flooring is extremely popular in Kitchens and Half Bathrooms, do not recommend for full Bathrooms. The Malibu Wide Plank Hardwood Collection would be considered Water Resistant. Can this product in 1/2 in be refinished?

Asked by kristy December 23, 2020

Answer

CAN FLOOR BE SANDED THEN REFINISHED or JUST REFINISHED AS THESE ARE 2 COMPLETELY DIFFERENT PROCESSES: The entire collection of Engineered & Solid Hardwood Flooring is extremely durable, easy to clean and easy to maintain. All of our floors are sealed with 7 layers of the latest super low gloss urethane finish with aluminum oxide, providing protection from everyday wear and all backed by a Lifetime Residential Finish & 5 Year Commercial Warranty. If you wanted to strip off all (7) Layers of Factory UV Cured Stain & Finish, and bring floor down to raw unfinished smooth wood, pending the install application this could technically be done (1) time on the 3/8” & 1/2” Engineered Locking which has a 1.2mm Thick Face Veneer and (2) times on the 1/2” & 9/16” Engineered Tongue & Groove which has a 2mm Face Veneer. However this sand & finish is not covered under warranty as there are too many variables which can affect the outcome performed by your professional sand and finish mechanic. More then likely you would never sand and finish a prefinished floor unless you want to 100% Change the color. You would also lose your lifetime residential finish warranty and the surface texture which is wire brushed or distressed with saw mark etc. If needed for whatever reason you could apply a new coat of finish (refinish with no sanding) to the floor using the Basic Coatings TyKote or Bona Prep recoat adhesion method for recoating a prefinished hardwood floor that contains aluminum oxide in the urethane finish. If board damage occurs, you can always have a professional mechanic perform board replacement.

Can this be glued down?

YES. For detailed installation instructions, please refer to the "Installation Guide" located as a PDF file attached to each Product listing page under "Info & Guides".

What is the recommend glue and trowel to use when installing this product over concrete

Asked by Randaddy October 6, 2020
1
Answer

This Engineered 1/2" Tongue & Groove Collection can be full spread glue down, staple, nail down or floating application. Please refer to the "Installation Guide" located as a PDF file attached to each Product listing page under "Info & Guides". Engineered Flooring can be fully-glued to wood subfloors and concrete. Follow the glue manufactures labeling instructions regarding correct trowel size. Recommended Adhesives: Use 100% urethane or a Silane based adhesive that are designed for use with engineered wood floors. Technical Data Sheets for these adhesive can be found on the adhesive manufactures website. Technical data sheets provide the guidelines for approved subfloors, approved floors, subfloor prep, cure times, and trowel sizes among other information.

Mopping

I use wood cleaners only or a very well wrung mop; never sopping wet. IF you bought the lower priced version of the floor be careful; the core layer looks like a pressed fiber-board And running it under water, I found it actually absorbs water, which can damage your floor. For that reason, I upgraded to the 1/2” version which has slices of wood beneath the wear layer and doesn’t draw water. There are many commercial wood floor cleaners on the market to choose from.

I can’t decide if I should go with 3/8 or 1/2 maple Manhattan. What do you recommend?

Asked by Frankyj August 6, 2020

Answers

Buy the upgraded version! Not only is the top thicker, but the bottom layers of the cheaper 3/8” product are made with a fiber-board like core, that when wet will actually pull in water! Water damage to a floor usually appears on the edges of the boards; you do not want a product that absorbs water. The upgraded version has wood layers sandwiched beneath the wear layer and the boards are both longer and wider. The floor is really beautiful, but you want it to last for years. The price difference is not that great for a huge difference in quality.

Are the edges beveled/rounded, or do they fit flush along the top? Can't tell by the images.

Asked by Benj June 2, 2020

Answer

The Malibu Wide Plank Maple Cardiff has hand-rolled edges and ends, same as micro-bevel edges/ends.

My floor feeling is great and I got exactly what was described in the product description
The quality of the product was good - no cracks or chipped parts. It did not need any acclimatization and plus the color, the look was exactly as mentioned in the product description. I had plywood subfloor and ended up using glue and staple installation resulting in a good install. One thing - you cannot slide any heavy furniture otherwise you might get scratches. but overall the feel is solid. Good luck!

Top coating peels off with moisture exposure
I loved how this flooring looked but I've now discovered that the top coating is like a thin layer of plastic that bubbles and peels off if it is exposed to moisture, and I think that means this flooring cannot be sanded and refinished at all. I first discovered it because I made a birdhouse out of some scraps I had leftover, but now I just moved a plant and discovered the peeling plastic under where the plant was. So disappointing. I'm attaching the picture of the bird house and the floor below. I've had the floor down about 10 months but I only got the plant a month ago.

Your Malibu Wide Plank Hardwood Floor should not be peeling, this appears to be moisture related with water sitting on floor for extended period of time. We recently (3 or 4 weeks ago) had ~1000 sq/ft of Malibu Wide Plank Maple Hermosa professionally installed in our home. Pros: The color of the flooring is beatiful and as expected. Cons: There were several boards where the stain did not cover far enough down the edge of the board. Once joined to another board, a portion of unstained board would show due to the rolled edges of the boards. This resulted in us having to catch and stain match these errors in the midst of installation or rendering boards unusable. The planks are also extremely soft. This flooring is rated at a Janka hardness score of 1450 which would make it as hard as maple wood, but somehow my 32 pound toddler managed to dent it sitting in a super lightweight plastic chair. However, the biggest disappointment is that it scratches extremely easy. We have felt pads on the bottom of everything in our house (furniture, chairs, tables, and etc) due to having children. Since its install it has incurred scratches from the zippers of pant pockets, sliding a light plastic tote (less than 2lbs) across it, a 24 pack of soda cans being gently nudged aside with a foot, and even a clothes basket being pushed by our son with 4-5 pieces of clothing inside. The urethane finish on this flooring is cheap and just does not hold up to like a typically polyurethane finish. Additionally, when the delivery company called to schedule a block of time for the flooring to be delivered, they were informed in advance that our driveway is quite steep. The delivery truck arrived two hours early, which woke up my pregnant wife who was trying to sleep because she had just got off her shift as a provider in our local ER. She was then asked to help unload the flooring and push the pallet up our driveway. Knowing that she shouldn’t be doing so due to her pregnancy, she called me to come home early and assist the delivery man in pushing the flooring up our driveway. I did so willingly to avoid any issues, however at the cost of exacerbating the already torn meniscus in my knee. Overall, I feel for the money we spent that the quality is extremely poor and the service was even worse. I encourage anyone considering engineered hardwood to do their research, get something with a polyurethane finish and check the Janka hardness scale. I also encourage you to purchase from a company who subcontracts to more customer-friendly third party delivery companies. These are some of the things I wish I would have known before purchasing this product.

All Malibu Wide Plank Hardwood Flooring is extremely durable, easy to clean and easy to maintain. All of our floors are sealed with 7 layers/coats of super low gloss urethane finish with aluminum oxide, providing protection from everyday wear and all backed by a Lifetime Residential Finish, 5 Year Commercial Warranty, and Lifetime Structural Warranty. When a metal zipper is rubbed/dragged across any type of hard surface flooring, more than likely scratching will occur. There are ways to prevent scratches and denting on Hardwood Flooring by taking proper precautions to protect furniture and chair legs and feet with felt protectors.
Protect your floor when using a dolly for moving furniture or appliances. Never slide or roll heavy furniture or appliances across the floor. • Place protective pads beneath furniture legs and other heavy objects. • Minimize abrasive material and dirt by placing mats on both sides of exterior doors and by using area rugs in high traffic areas • Use protective mats beneath rolling chairs and keep furniture casters clean. • Keep pets’ nails trimmed. • Remove shoes with cleats, spikes or exceptionally pointy heels before walking on the floor. In the Installation Guide in each carton of flooring and also located under Info & Guides under each product listing page are detailed Hardwood Flooring installation instructions. The first bullet under Owner/Installer Responsibility states: “Before installation inspect the flooring for any manufactured defects. Defects on the face of the planks can be avoided by trimming the plank, and the remainder of the plank used, this is expected to minimize waste. Any board deemed unacceptable should simply not be used. If there are concerns with the quality of the product, please STOP installation and contact the Home Depot to address the issue. Stain missing from the edge of planks should not occur and should not be installed. However if it falls within the 5%-7% waste factor of the total Square Footage being installed it may be under the acceptable allowance. Any issues with the delivery of your flooring would be addressed with your local Home Depot store, or if purchased online call 1-800-HOME-DEPOT (1-800-466-3337). I purchased the Maple Cardiff wide plank flooring. I wanted a natural rustic looking floor with a hint of warmth and this delivered! I like the light distressing, and because its maple, the wood grain is not too busy. I did not have any damaged pieces at all and I was glad to see most of the wood planks were good size. The flooring does vary in color from board to board but once on the floor looks very appealing. So far its been very easy to clean!
