Questions & Answers

Can the Martha Stewart 72' x 96' ultimate closet kit be cut down to fit a 92' closet?

Asked by: Leslie
Leslie - The closet can, if you have the right tools. A circular saw will cut the shelves for the left and right sides down to the correct sides, and the rods are adjustable.

The Ultimate kit has a top shelf, can it be shortened?

I've got a 6' closet I'd like to pot this in,
Asked by: closeteer
Yes, cut to fit. check the location of the pre drilled holes on the sides of the boards. After you cut one shelf down pre drill the holes in the same spots as they are on the peice you cut off so the wood doesnt split when you use the wood screws to secure it.

Is this unit expandable ? the wall space length in my closet is 117 inches. Also, do you have a tie rack for this unit?

Asked by: Liza
This unit goes up to 8 feet. Home Depot sells all kinds of the same pieces but individually. It allows you to add pieces to what ever length wall you have. It's best to plan your pieces though.

Are the shelves used between the drawers for aethetics?

If the shelves are used between the drawers, then there aren't enough 24" shelves. The picture depicted shows shelves, so which one is it?
Asked by: ConfusedInstaller
The kit comes with enough shelves as the picture shows. There is only one shelf directly above the upper drawer that you must install with screws. This shelf will hold the two upright vertical panels together. They also recommend a shelf below the first drawer for stability. I think it's a waste of a good shelf. We just added 24 in wide small part (I think the kit had it). If you are not installing this unit wall-to-wall, I suggest adding anchors (not included) to attach bottom of the vertical panels to the wall. There are no shelves "between" the drawers. The shelves above the drawers can be positioned at any height.

If you want or require (e.g. because of a floor radiator) a wall hung system as opposed to a floor mount system, this is an acceptable alternative. I personally prefer a wood system, to me it is superior (looks, style, sturdier, doesn't make wire impressions) to a wire system (ala closetmaid or rubbermaid). MSL customer service (aka the stow company) is exemplary. One box was missing, and another was damaged due to shipping. Both were replaced without hassle and packed better to avoid shipping damage. FYI: My walk in closet is an "L-shaped" , that fits within an ~ 10 ft long, 8 ft wide, 9 ft high box. I purchased 2 ultimate closet kit 2 premier tower kit 1 essential shoe tower kit Design/engineering flaws & Recommendations ========================================== 1) One inch longer rails. Included rails are 32" and 48" long. They should be at least 1" longer (say 33" and 49"). Why? Studs are normally 16" apart. Holes in rail are spaced 1" apart, and starts at 1/2" from each end. Therefore on a 32(48) inch rail, there at 31(47) holes, distance between them is 31(47) inches. Argh!!! A classic off by one error ;-(. 2) Vertical panels notched downward 1/2 the width and by the thickness of the rail. Panels are notched to hang on the rail. Because the steel rail has a finite thickness (~ 1/8"), the panels are offset from the wall at the notch which results in a gap between the wall and the vertical panel at the rail preventing the panel from lying flush with the wall throughout its length. This situation is exacerbated if a screw happens to lie at a panel (e.g at a corner)(See picture) 3) Pre-drilled holes or dimples to indicate location for drawer slides. The included paper template for attaching the screws to the drawer slides should be changed. It would cost less (for MSL) and make the assembly job easier and less error prone (for the customer) by pre-drilling holes in the appropriate location. To make matters worst, the template does not exactly match the metal draw slide rail! Two (out of 10) of my drawers also tore at the flimsy paper 45 degrees. Ditch the paper guides and just use a square and the actual slides to align the screw holes. I ended up using a brad nailer on all my draws. 4) Indentation on the bottom of the shoe shelves to support the shelf pins. Shoe shelves require screws and thus are not easily adjustable. 5) Directions recommend 2 screws per stud. This option is unrealistic for two reasons. First, because of the screw design, driving the screw at an angle makes it impossible for the screw to be flush with the rail. Secondly, since the rail holes are separated in 1" increments, and the width of a 2x4 is actually 1.5x3.5, that leaves a normal 1/4" on each side of the stud. Hopefully, your stud finder is that accurate. 6) Modifications I made, *) use brad nailer on drawers *) made stain wood rail cover (picture) *) made routed stained pine shelf insert (picture) *) use router on vertical panels to extend notch vertically(picture) *) use router to make shoe shelves adjustable without screws (picture) FYI, MSL, Easyrail, Simplyneu, and Easyclosets are all affiliates of The Stow Company

It looks really nice and can be adjusted to fit your space. The biggest problem for us was the lack of comprehensive instructions. This kit is comprised of 7 different units. Each unit has it's own instructions, but there are no instructions for the kit as a whole. For parts of assembly, we had to look at the picture and then wing it. Also the drawers are a bit of a pain. Every part comes with pre drilled holes except the drawers. To attach the slides to the drawer, they give you a paper template that is really annoying to use. We had to redo most of them to get the drawers straight.

Looks really nice when combined with other kits to fill out a closet. In order to get the entire top row to be flush at the top, I had to have extra vertical panels so that each vertical section had a left and right wall (no sharing). Then I had to drill new holes halfway between the top edge and the first hole, in line with existing row of holes. I used the same 1/8th inch bit that I used to set up the screws that went into wall studs. This allowed the top horizontal shelf to form a flush look across the top. Also, on the drawer knobs, I had to add a #8 flat washer because the supplied screw wouldn't tighten completely, and allowed the knob to pull and push when touched.

I used this kit and several others from the MS line to build out our large master closet and am really happy with the results. The hanging design means it doesn't sit on our new hardwood floor, and the kits are very well thought out, fairly easy to install, and arrived with all the needed parts including lots of extra screws and shelf pins. About 20 years ago I had installed a reach-in closet with the same product before it was MS and that one is still going strong. The company has since switched to green materials, which is great--maybe not quite as solid as the old version but it has a 10-year warranty and seems sturdy enough to do the job (plus the drawers are nicer than the old ones). After reading other comments about delivery damage (those packages are heavy!), I had all the parts shipped to our local HD store where they arrived in perfect condition and we picked them up from there. I didn't use the online design tool since our closet is oddly-shaped, and the instructions are skimpy on how to install multiple units together, but I figured it all out without too much trouble. At one point I needed some advice about installation of the corner shelves, and when I called customer service they were very helpful and sent me some extra offset shelf pins at no charge. The only thing I am not 100% happy with is that the melamine edges chip easily, as others have noted, and this was not true of the older version of the product. But the chips are small enough that they don't really show much, and overall the product looks GREAT.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Would purchase again The setup is nice because you don't have to draw up your own plans for a closet. We have a reach in closet that is an awkward size. We previously just had one long shelf, pole and a dresser. But it was just a terrible setup. Not a good use of space. This worked well. We ended up putting shoes on the top shelf since our ceilings are pretty low and we couldn't fit boxes up there. The quality of the laminate doesn't seem super high. I'm worried about the longevity of it, but we'll see I guess. The screws were difficult to put in. You'd have to use a drill to do so, not just a philips screwdriver. And the guides for putting the drawer tracks on were not great. We had to redo all of them a few times and then just ditched them for the last two.

Luckily, we were renovating and the contractor did assist with the project. We were unable to place the drawers where we wanted (at the very bottom of the shelf) but I am not sure if that is due to where the contractor placed the brace into the wall or if the kit specifies that it needs to be that low. Overall, after it has been installed, it is very close to the pictured product, and is you are able to customize it with ease. Lots of storage options and worth the purchase.
