Product Overview

More homes and businesses in the U.S. are protected by a GAF roof than by any other product. We are the leading roofing manufacturer in North America.

Nothing protects quite like a roof.

Nothing protects quite like a roof. That's why millions of Americans live, work, and play under quality products from North America's largest roofing manufacturer - GAF.

Always have a balanced ventilation system. The amount of exhaust ventilation should always be equal the amount of intake ventilation.

How much Ventilation do I need?

Include 1 sq. ft. of attic ventilation, evenly split between intake and exhaust, for every 300 sq. ft. of attic floor space.

Choosing the right attic ventilation for your home is very important. GAF offers a great selection of Master Flow and Cobra products.

What type of Ventilation do I need?

Review the ventilation options below to determine the best fit for your home application.

Available in both roof mount and gable mount, power attic vents exhaust the greatest volume of hot and/or humid air from the attic.

High efficiency Electric, Solar or Hybrid

Quickly removes large volumes of heat and moisture from your attic.

Cooler external air enters through vents lower on the eaves or soffits that “pushes” the hot/moist attic air out of the vents higher on the roof.

No electricity required

Allows excess heat and moisture to escape your attic without the need for electric hook-up.

Wind Turbines utilize the wind to pull heat and moisture from your attic and acts as a static exhaust vent when wind is still.

Wind-powered, smooth, and quiet operation

Utilizes the wind to pull heat and moisture from attic; acts as a static exhaust vent when wind is still.

Located at the lowest part of the roof, intake vents are a critical part of the attic ventilation system, allowing fresh air to flow into the attic

The most overlooked and critical part of attic ventilation

Allows cooler, fresh air to enter the attic at/near the soffits driving heat and moisture out higher exhaust vents.

Your home offers warning signs when your attic isn’t properly ventilated. You may recognize some of these signs in your own home.

5 Warning Signs

Here are some poor attic ventilation warning signs that you may recognize:

A possible cause of higher cooling costs could be insufficient attic ventilation, requiring the cooling system to run excessively.

1. Increased energy costs

Excess attic heat can cause your cooling system to work harder, raising your energy costs.

If you see that your shingles are dry or breaking, that could mean you have inadequate attic ventilation or you may need a new roof

2. Curling/cracking shingles

Inadequate ventilation can cause your roof shingles to curl and crack.

Moisture in the attic can become trapped and condense on rafters and insulation if not insulated properly. This can potentially increase energy costs

3. Roof decking moisture

Excess attic moisture can drip into attic insulation reducing effectiveness, even damaging ceilings below.

Stains or mold growth inside your home may be caused by inadequate attic ventilation. Excessive moisture in the attic allows mold and mildew to thrive

4. Attic mold/mildew

Excessive moisture can cause dangerous mold and mildew causing additional concerns.

Ice damming can cause water to enter the attic and house if you don’t have an adequate shingle underlayment or if the flashing has deteriorated.

5. Winter ice dams

Ice dams can cause expensive leaks and damage in attics, as well as living spaces.

The GAF Master Flow 30-Watt Low Profile Solar Powered Roof Mount Exhaust Fan will help remove excess heat and moisture from your attic to protect your roofing system from premature deterioration and its low profile design enhances to appearance of your finished roof. The Solar Powered fan requires no wiring and uses no electricity. Hot attic air is removed from the attic by the fan as fresh air is drawn into the attic through your existing intake vents. The 24-Volt DC brushless motor provides airflow up to 750 CFM and requires no maintenance. The impact resistant, 30-Watt solar panel helps withstand hail and foreign object impact. Recommended usage for this unit is one unit per 1000 sq. ft. of attic space with a minimum intake ventilation of 560 sq. in. of net free area.

What’s does CFM mean, what’s the diameter of the hole in the roof for this fan? How many watts for this fan?

Asked by Ford August 26, 2020
1
Answer

CFM, is the abbreviation for Cubic Feet per Minute, you will need a 15" diameter hole and the 24V DC motor has a rating of 1.65 amps equaling approximately 30 watts. If you have any other inquiries about our Master Flow products please call Technical Services at 800-211-9612.

What solar exhaust fan do you have to exhaust 4600sq feet?

Asked by tyler July 17, 2020
1
Answer

We do not have a "single" fan that would do 4600 sq. Ft., you would need multiple fans. You would need 5 of the High-Power Solar & Dual Powered Roof (PRSOLAR2 / PRHYBRID2) to properly ventilate an attic of 4600 sq. ft. If you have any other inquiries about our Master Flow products please call Technical Services at 800-211-9612.

Answer

I have mine installed above my AC that is installed in my attic. The attic is still hot even with it running but not as a hot as it would be without it. It comes on when it reaches a specific temp which during the summer is most of the time. It helps to get rid of heat that rises to the top so the primary cooling does not work as hard.

Can this be installed on a tile roof? the tile are not flat.

Answers

I am not a roofer. Please be sure to get some more professional advice before doing the install as my advice is only one man's opinion that's installed a solar fan. With that said, the installation appears to be straightforward. the fan needs to be installed on a flat smooth surface so you can make a watertight seal. I believe you will install under the tiles and membrane. Seal it to the roof. Reinstall the tile. My best guess is that this product is not designed to be installed over the top of the tiles as you were asking. Good luck.

8/21/2019. Purchased 2 units yesterday 8/20/2019. 1974 Manufactured Home. Roof is split into 2 attic lines. Had 2 Wind Powered Spinner Turbines, No Wind, Massive Heat wave. Placed Master Flow units on both existing holes on roof lines. Did not peel back shingles or nail down yet. Monitored temperature inside of house. 72 degrees at 1:00 p.m. Usually 78, and air conditioning must be turned on. Short Video with sound of Units on roof here, in operation. Work quite well, and quiet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--TxirFquQ0 Thank You So Much Home Depot and Master Flow.

Hard to rate these. I had the roofers put them in (3 in the house roof, 1 in the garage), and they seem to be working fine. They're very quiet, and as far as I can tell, they're making a difference in the temperature in both the house and the garage. What makes them hard to rate is that the weather has been cooler lately, so I'm not positive that they are making the huge difference they're supposed to. I think ilI' know better when the weather turns warm again.

As a GAF MasterElite roofing contractor that provides the enhanced GAF Warranties, I use the GAF/Masterflow Solar Powered Fan as part of the GAF Roofing System. The appearance is a big plus - low profile and discreet appearance. Provides necessary roof ventilation for Hip style roofs that do not permit ridge vents. The only problem has been some noise from the small motor on a few of the units that the homeowner can hear inside. Replacement motors have been sent to remedy the problem.

Just installed it. Much higher flow rate and quiet (I can not hear it running). Our old solar attic fan was noisy and did not have a thermostat so it ran during winter.
