There isn’t any way to brighten the display but I’ve just put a patio umbrella up next to it in a umbrella stand and it helps a great deal to see the display and keep the sun off of you while you check on the food
The unit is completely electric. Usually apartments will limit charcoal or gas because of smoke. Remember that this unit will smoke. However, there is no fire that would be common with gas or charcoal. I would check with the apartment manager to see why the others are prohibited.
