Poorly made
I bought this smoker 2 months ago. Only used 3 times with the heating at 225. After the last time using the paint on the inside all burned off and on the doors. Had to pry the doors open as they were completly stuck fr the paint. Would not recommend this smoker

Dear Murph, Thank you for providing this feedback. We have reviewed the submitted pictures and we would recommend cleaning the inside of the smoker after each use. You may clean the smoker with mild soap and water or Apple Cider Vinegar. Please make sure that you clean the air vent as it is covered with smoke buildup as well. When cleaning has been completed, please preseason the smoker per our manual and condition the metal with cooking oil. If you have any questions on the care of the smoker, please let us know.
    Awesome smoker at a budget!
It was a Father’s Day gift back in 2018, first year was used and abused almost all weekends and even during the week. Drip Pan did nor survived and corroded quickly, charcoal pan survided another year but not much different than drip pan. Grills are sturdy enough and durable. If housing gets corrosion, you can always sand it and paint it using food grade BBQ high temp paints. I use charcoal in a charcoal basket on top of the remainings of the original tray and ignite the charcoal using propane. After is set, turn off propane and continue on charcoal and wood pieces. Favorites are the ribs (any) with charcoal and hickory. With rear vent almost closed (1/16th”) and only 1 lower vent open 3/4, temp remain very stable around 214F. 3-2 method on dry rubbed ribs and everyone will be anxious waiting!

      Good product
This is our first smoker. We are very happy with it. We have been smoking ducks, salmon, beef jerky. They are delicious. It's very easy to use and temperature control is pretty reliable. I highly recommend this product.

      DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY
I bought this item on March 18th 2021 because I was in the market for a smoker and it was a good price I took it home took it out of the box set it up and used it 3 times in 3 weeks...the racks started rusting, the drip pan started to rust and the burner was rusting...on top of that the paint started to bubble in spots and peel off. I usually listen to reviews but my gut says to buy it anyway...my gut was wrong...the masterbuilt company warrantee don't cover rust or paint so the warrantee is useless as the paper it's printed on so emailed the masterbuilt company with pictures and they were so nice to offer me 4 new racks as a 1 time courtesy so I told them kindly no so I called the home depot closest to me and would not take it back even though it hasn't been 1 month so contacted another one a bit further and they did take it back...PLEASE DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry to hear it has not been a positive one. The interior of the unit should be cleaned and conditioned after every use and the removable racks and bowls should be washed with grease cutting soap and water after each use. For easier clean up, the bowls can be wrapped in aluminum foil but, the racks should not be as this will cause uneven airflow. Once the interior is cleaned with grease cutting soap and water, the metal should be conditioned with a light coating of cooking oil. This will also make clean up easier, if you coat the interior before use. Masterbuilt

Goes out in the slightest breeze
Bought this to replace an old electric smoker I had. Propane is easy to regulate and thought wow this will be great for the value. Now even in the slightest breeze I have to keep running re-lighting the burner because it likes to go out. Not worth the hassle when I have to keep coming out every five or 10 minutes to check on it. Don’t waste your money. This what I have to do in order to keep it lit on a breezy day.

Six Years On and Still Smokin'
No boring old neckties for me, my family bought this smoker for me several years ago and I have smoked well over a thousand pounds of food in it since. I have smoked pork shoulders (three at once a few times), brisket, tri-tip, salmon, trout, bacon, sausage, beef & venison jerky, whole chickens (four at once a few times, but you've got to spatchcock them), chicken wings, whole turkeys, turkey breast, pork roast, tenderloin, and prime rib (and man, that was amazing!). It has been a rock solid tool in our household and my wife has already said I could get something bigger and (her words here, not mine) better. But I told her that there's just no need. My old faithful Masterbuilt does the job every time. When your wife says, "you know? You need to smoke something this weekend.", you know it's a hit.

The door leaks smoke really bad. The burner doesn’t adjust low enough. Keeping smoker on the lowest setting though out the whole time of smoking brisket. I have to sit by it the whole 8 hours adjusting heat by opening doors.

                  Just an okay smoker
First the good. I was really excited to find a duel fuel smoker at a reasonable price. Purchased on 07/03/2020 for cookout the next day. Product assembled easily with just a couple of tools, didn't take long either. The next morning I seasoned the smoker following the manufacturers instructions. It's a good size, easily fits one rack of ribs per level. I liked that I could add chips, charcoal and refill the water tray without opening the meat compartment because if you're looking you're not cooking. The slide out rack for the water tray is a nice feature too. Now the not so good. I attempted to smoke using hardwood lump charcoal. I used the burner to light the charcoal, which it did quickly. I could not keep the smoker up to temperature with just charcoal (couldn't get about 150 F) so I lit the propane burner and turned it down to low but then I couldn't keep the smoker from getting too hot (couldn't get below 280 F). Next is that I had the vent screws actually just a bit loose when the smoker was cool but after the smoker heated up the metal sides warped and caused the vents to stick. This coupled with the thin vent metal getting very hot, allowing the tabs to bend very easily, made adjusting the vents nearly impossible. The metal the vents are stamped from needs to be heavier. Last, all of the grease falls into the water tray which then sits there and boils, splattering all over the lower door and building up on the lip on the inside of the door. The lower door was also "sticky" and had to be jerked hard to open when the unit was hot, opens quite easily when cold though. When I jerked the door open to add chips this boiling hot grease went all over the controls, my deck and unfortunately my arm. My arm is not in the photo but you can see everything else after I wiped down the front of the unit. There is a grease drip tray that hangs from the bottom of the unit that's a good idea but it was completely empty even after having 3 racks of ribs going for 4.5 hours, it's just not functional in a vertical smoker with a water tray; there would need to be a deflector plate above the water tray to channel the grease to the side but that may impede air flow. This isn't my first smoker but it is my first attempt to use charcoal as the main fuel instead of propane. With further use I would hope the stickiness of the vents and lower door would subside and I could likely master temperature control, but overall if I had the opportunity to use this smoker prior to purchasing I probably would have looked towards something else and I may be inquiring as to The Home Depot's return policy.

Its our first smoker so to give it a fair review is difficult. It arrived with a dent on the back but was still in decent shape and we could live with it. It was a great price for our needs 100. Off. We like the dual fuel features. Regulating the temp is a little difficult but this could be my inexperience with it. While smoking the Firebox door would stick and the draft vents stuck as well, could have been from the canola oil it was seasoned with. Our first smoke was pork butt and it turned out very good. There're some good videos out there for a few mods, i recommend checking them out prior to using this smoker, it helped us prepare for our first smoke using the Master built pro, so far we love it.

Seasoned the smoker a couple of weeks ago and everything went smoothly. Yesterday my neighbor caught a 110 lbs. pacific blue marlin and gave me a slab to test out the smoker. Soaked the fish overnight in brown sugar, and hawaiian salt brine. What's shown is from the reminder of the second batch. Used cherry wood chips and the flavor was awesome. The heat controls worked fine.

Great smoker I was able to maintain 230 F with low heat (lowest heat setting with all the dampers closed) from the propane all throughout the smoking cycle. There was a slight increase in the temperature once the woodchips started burning in the smoker and the pan for the chips may need to be a little bit more robust. I do like the option to use propane or charcoal as fuel for the 230S.

An good smoker at a great price
On it's own, the smoker it good at what it does, but comes at a price that is hard to beat for the quality of what it makes. The pull out racks are great. You can adjust the spacing to fit something large like a turkey, or space them out evenly to do multiple smaller items. If you need to baste, you can slide the rack out part way to make it easier to get at. And when you're done, you can take them out to clean. I also wrap the rack below the meat with tinfoil to catch the drippings and keep them from splattering everywhere or causing flare ups. Makes cleaning a lot easier as you just have to clean the rack they're on, and replace the foil. Most of my sticking points have some fairly simple workarounds as well. First, the instructions are fairly limited. They work alright for getting everything together, but they tried to cram all the languages together, and so the actual wording is very brief. One thing that I'd suggest, is when installing the vents, avoid screwing the nuts down tight or even close to tight; Otherwise, once the smoker heats up, they will lock in place which isn't convenient at all for controlling the smoke. Second, as many people have mentioned, the pan for coals/wood gets super hot, and unless you're careful, you'll likely ignite the wood and the temps will soar. A Cast Iron skillet (I got a 12" without a long handle) sitting on top of the included pan works awesome, AND acts as a thermal battery. Thirdly, the water pan could be bigger. I've seen a few people mention using disposable tin pans sitting on top of the included one, but I haven't tried that yet. As it is, you'll need to refill every couple hours. I got a long neck bottle to take care of this that I keep with the smoker. I'd also super highly recommend a remote read thermometer like a Thermoworks Smoke. While the built in thermometer seems to be fairly accurate, there's a few benefits here. Unless you just really like being glued to your smoker all day, this can help alert you as something is going wrong without having to be right there. It also lets you keep an eye on the meat temp without having to open the smoke box which will help maintain temp more evenly. It really just helps make the whole job more relaxing, and you can take care of other things while you smoke, which really helps if you're prepping for guests or have people over while smoking. I've seen some people mention chipping paint and bubbling. The exterior paint on mine has been great. the only damage to the interior paint came when my wood ignited and the temp ran up fast, so I can't hardly blame that on the smoker.

                          Duel fuel MDS 230.
Owners Manual - When using coal 3 lbs max - The LP gas should be disconnected and 25 ft away from the unit. Manual says, do not use both fuels at the same time. Is this for safety? Can we do an upgrade to make it safe? I have seen posts on how some use both fuels at the same time. The Masterbuilt phone hotline (800) 489 1581 is closed, 2nd to the Virus, and has not replied to my questions or damaged unit warrant claim. Food tastes great cooking with this smoker.

This unit should not be used with both fuels, at the same time. Charcoal is a heat source, as is the gas. It is for safety and cannot be modified for use at the same time. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. As grease builds up, at the bottom, it can cause flare ups and eat through the metal. To avoid rusting out, the unit should be cleaned with grease cutting soap, water, and/or apple cider vinegar and dried after each use. This will extend the life of your smoker. Masterbuilt
