How do you get the flame sensor wire to tighten so that the flame stays lit? I'm having problems with it.
Asked by: Steve
As I remember there is a sensor in the flame that provides a signal to the valve. If the flame goes out the sensor will detect it and shut the gas off. To light the burner you push in on the temperature setting knob while pushing the igniter button. Hold the temperature setting knob down for several seconds to give the sensor time to heat up and detect the flame. If the flame dies down when you release the knob, push it back in quickly to restart the flame and hold for a little longer. If it still will not stay lit you have either a bad sensor or valve body.

Assembly, can this item be assembled? From the reviews it sounds like it is a major pain to assemble. Thanks!
Asked by: MeatLover
I didn’t think the assembly was all that hard, but it did take a couple hours. I’d be surprised if you can get one shipped to you already assembled. But I’d bank on it that if you go by the service desk at your local Home Depot to order it, request assembly as a condition of purchase. They’ll do it..

Do you get a smoke ring and flavor from the smoke?
Asked by: Cajunboy
I use hickory chips for most of my smoking, and yes, I do get good flavor and I good smoke rings. I smoked a 6 1/2 lb brisket over 7 hours, and the smoke ring was highly noticeable.

My second smoker, the first one was a charcoal one that turned ribs into shoe leather. The Thermo temp was delivered and it took me about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to assemble. And I followed the instructions and took my time. I thought it was an easy build no complaints. When I tried to season it It would not stay lit, my fault I found one fitting that I did not tighten properly. After I seasoned the smoker we had to wait a couple of days for the first test, it was only a couple of days but seemed like for ever. We smoked two racks of ribs and they turned out fantastic 3-2-1 method. The smoker seemed to work like it was supposed to Indo need to get a better thermometer but once set the temp stayed where it was set 225 I can't wait for the next smoke John

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Smoker This Masterbuilt Thermotemp XL propane smoker is for home use but has so much you would think you're a chef. There are four racks to hold lots of meat. The assembly was tedious. I worked on it for hours. The instructions were confusing which was part of the problem. Many parts looked very small in the picture and it was hard to pick them out. The screws came on a card and were very well marked. A phillips screwdriver and an adjustable wrench were the only tools needed. The smoking temperature is controlled by thermostat. It takes the guesswork out of maintaining the right temperature. There are so many safety features on this smoker. The price is reasonable for this propane smoker. Propane tank is not included.

It maintained the temperature with the thermostatic control within 5 degrees up or down. With my old propane smoker, I had to keep an eye on it very closely, not with this unit. I like the size and the safety feature about shutting off the gas supply if wind blows out flame. Good unit, I would recommend.

I've had issues that no matter what temp I put it at it rides at 200 the whole time or the temp will constantly bounce around 15-20 degrees I'll set the dial to 225 and my digital thermometer will read 260 so you constantly have to adjust the dial. This is not a set and forget product you need to stand next to it the whole time to make sure you get the temp you want. I have called Masterbuilt customer service numerous times to complain about the issues they sent me a new regulator which was nice, but it did not fix the problem and after calling again their answer is basically "sorry about your luck" If I could I would return this product because this is a case of false advertisement.

This is a great smoker, holds the temperature where you set it, well built and has 4 shelves that are wide enough for a full rack of ribs. The reason why I did not give it 5 stars is that I believe that there is a design flaw with the wood tray that provides the smoke. My ThermoTemp will not smoke below 250F forcing me to remove the flame guard above the burner and I replace it with a small cast iron smoke box that sits about 4" above the burner. The ThermoTemp now smokes at any temperature and still holds the temp. Masterbuilt support is great and responded quickly but none of their recommendations helped. The next step was to replace parts, but no need now. BTW, If I had it to do all over again, I would still buy the ThermoTemp.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good smoker First 4 smokes went great temp was exactly where I had the dial set... on the fifth something wasn't working. I had the dial at 225 but the temp was 300 I had to back the dial down to 175 to get the temp to 225.. very sturdy however the racks are not...to build something that solid and then go cheap on the racks is a head scratcher. Would of received 5 stars if I didn't have the issue with the last smoke. I'm sure it's an easy fix will have to call Masterbuilt.

Took about two weeks to get it. But,it was free, so I’m not complaining. Also it will take a couple hours to assemble, but it’s not difficult.. My box came without a bracket to hold the grease trap. Masterbuilt sent it at no charge in just a couple days. I was dying to use it, so I placed an aluminum pan on the ground under the drain. The smoker is very easy to use., and it works great! The dial for adjusting the temperature is not as accurate as I’d like. I do most of my smoking at 225. And I have adjust it to the middle between 200-225 for that.. I use a battery powered remote thermometer that has two probes. One I put in to the meat, and the other on the rack I’m smoking on and adjust the dial as needed. Once it’s dialed in, it maintains that temperature within a few degrees the entire time. Overall I’m very happy with it, And I think most users will be as well.

Took about an hour and a half to assemble, preseasoned the next day, temperature held +/- 2 degrees, two days later I did 3 racks of baby back ribs that turnedout amazing, even though the wood chips were pre-soaked for 30 minutes I did have to replace them every 30 minutes to keep the smoke going.
