Will smoking turn the window black? How good is the view during smoking? My previous Masterbuilt (duel fuel, duel door) had the chips catch fire quite often (even with soaking), does that happen with this one?
Asked by: CaptainScott
Thank you for your question! The window on your unit will eventually cover over with a brown film due to the smoke and grease of use. You'll find that if you take some apple cider vinegar to it, it will come right off. Cleaning the window every 2-3 times you use it should allow you to keep an eye on the foods inside. The view is great - you can see the smoke roll off the chips from below as well as make sure your foods aren't getting over-done without having to open the door! You shouldn't have any issues with your chips catching fire in this unit. As one of our other customers mentioned, the best thing to do is wait until the unit is up to temp and you've got it settled in before adding chips and as a helpful hint, if you're worried about the chips being too dry, soak them and then throw them in the freezer in a sealed bag. This will keep the chips wet until you use them. If we can assist you further with any questions, give us a call @ 1-800-489-1581! We'd be happy to help!

How do you get the flame sensor wire to tighten so that the flame stays lit? I'm having problems with it.
Asked by: Steve
As I remember there is a sensor in the flame that provides a signal to the valve. If the flame goes out the sensor will detect it and shut the gas off. To light the burner you push in on the temperature setting knob while pushing the igniter button. Hold the temperature setting knob down for several seconds to give the sensor time to heat up and detect the flame. If the flame dies down when you release the knob, push it back in quickly to restart the flame and hold for a little longer. If it still will not stay lit you have either a bad sensor or valve body.

Just bought this smoker. After initial problems because of incorrect assembly (by Home Depot) which they fixed the first time and were very helpful in dealing with. We used for the first time this past weekend. Loved it! Easy to use great tasting food. My only issue was when ever I tried to turn down or adjust the temperature of the unit I would lose the flame and have to restart. It was a bit windy out but not more then about 10 mph. Is this normal? Would wind cause this? Am I doing something wrong? Or is this normal for the unit to do this to adjust the cooking temperature? Thanks.

I found with my "first" ThermoTemp that you MUST insure all of the connections are tight! I was having an outdoor kitchen put in and thought the contractors might have knocked something loose, since I couldn't keep a flame lite at all. Bought another one and made absolutely certain the one metal gas line (not certain which one, but it's for the safety shut-off) was very tight...DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN. Not a single problem since!

Assembly, can this item be assembled? From the reviews it sounds like it is a major pain to assemble. Thanks!
Asked by: MeatLover
I didn’t think the assembly was all that hard, but it did take a couple hours. I’d be surprised if you can get one shipped to you already assembled. But I’d bank on it that if you go by the service desk at your local Home Depot to order it, request assembly as a condition of purchase. They’ll do it..

ThermoTemp XL Propane Gas Smoker is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 42.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Smoker This Masterbuilt Thermotemp XL propane smoker is for home use but has so much you would think you're a chef. There are four racks to hold lots of meat. The assembly was tedious. I worked on it for hours. The instructions were confusing which was part of the problem. Many parts looked very small in the picture and it was hard to pick them out. The screws came on a card and were very well marked. A phillips screwdriver and an adjustable wrench were the only tools needed. The smoking temperature is controlled by thermostat. It takes the guesswork out of maintaining the right temperature. There are so many safety features on this smoker. The price is reasonable for this propane smoker. Propane tank is not included.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great working smoker This smoker makes the best smoke salmon I have ever tasted. When it came, I felt a bit intimidated by the weight of the box and putting it together took me over an hour. I wondered how I was going to move it once it was put together and low and behold, there are wheels on it making it easy to move around. It attaches easily to the propane tank and the instructions for using it are not hard to understand. It works very well and I feel certain that it will last a good long time, as it is sturdy and well-built. I highly recommend this smoker. I haven't tried anything but smoked salmon so far, but I plan on smoking all sorts of meats.

The first EVER thermostatically controlled gas smoker for the consumer...and it's INSULATED! No I don't work for Masterbuilt, but I have owned three of their electric models and one of their lower end gas smokers. I burned up the electric models over a period of three years, but I only used them approximately 60-70 hours total. I used the gas smoker twice and had a dickens of a time trying to keep the temperature steady. This ThermoTemp is AWESOME! The entire box is double-walled to keep the smoke/heat inside. I did upgrade it by added Nomex gaskets around both doors, which all but eliminates smoke leaks. You will need to purchase a dual-probe thermometer though. I recommend the SMOKE by Thermoworks. You just can't "dial in" exact temperatures with that big ole dial on the front of the unit. The temperatures range +/- 45-60 degrees using that alone. Now the temperature sits +/- 10 degrees from what you set it at.

It maintained the temperature with the thermostatic control within 5 degrees up or down. With my old propane smoker, I had to keep an eye on it very closely, not with this unit. I like the size and the safety feature about shutting off the gas supply if wind blows out flame. Good unit, I would recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Smoker Assembly was slightly confusing, but there's a YouTube video that made it easy. The wood chip tray is kind of small, but adequate. I seasoned it once, then made ribs and corn. Once the temperature was set, it stayed perfect for the entire 6 hours and yielded some of the best ribs I've ever done. I highly recommend the XL version of this smoker!

I've had issues that no matter what temp I put it at it rides at 200 the whole time or the temp will constantly bounce around 15-20 degrees I'll set the dial to 225 and my digital thermometer will read 260 so you constantly have to adjust the dial. This is not a set and forget product you need to stand next to it the whole time to make sure you get the temp you want. I have called Masterbuilt customer service numerous times to complain about the issues they sent me a new regulator which was nice, but it did not fix the problem and after calling again their answer is basically "sorry about your luck" If I could I would return this product because this is a case of false advertisement.

My second smoker, the first one was a charcoal one that turned ribs into shoe leather. The Thermo temp was delivered and it took me about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to assemble. And I followed the instructions and took my time. I thought it was an easy build no complaints. When I tried to season it It would not stay lit, my fault I found one fitting that I did not tighten properly. After I seasoned the smoker we had to wait a couple of days for the first test, it was only a couple of days but seemed like for ever. We smoked two racks of ribs and they turned out fantastic 3-2-1 method. The smoker seemed to work like it was supposed to Indo need to get a better thermometer but once set the temp stayed where it was set 225 I can't wait for the next smoke John
