Asked by Sara February 1, 2021Hi there, this planter has a built in water reservoir underneath the planting area. With the water reservoir, capillary action allows water in the reservoir to soak upward keeping the soil and plant roots moist creating a "self-watering" effect. Regular watering is required for the first few weeks giving the root system time to develop. Once the roots have grown down into the troughs of the planters, the plants will be able to pull moisture from the reservoir. With this system, you will find the potting mix stays moist longer than traditional planters. To avoid over-saturation an overflow hole allows excess water to drain out. Although "self-watering" containers still need to be watered, they need to be watered less frequently than your typical planter. Any excess water will come out oh the overflow drainage hole.

do i have to take screens out for this?
Asked by Lori May 17, 2020I am not sure I understand what you mean by screens. There are no screens in these window boxes. Now, if you are thinking about watering from the inside of your house to the outside, I would say leave your screens alone. I solved the watering problem by installing a drip system to two separate window boxes and it works wonderfully. I no longer have to go outside, hook a hose and water every other day when it gets hot. Check out you tube on how to install a drip system for window boxes. Hope this helps!

Asked by Nick April 21, 2020Love them but very difficult to use the commercial glue to adhere the joints! It’s definitely a two man job bc of the 72 inch length. And we had to file a little on the end caps to get them to fit! Not a Novice project! Overall they look great but they were just hung & cannot tell if they will withstand time
