Questions & Answers

The specification for this timer does not say it can independently control both outlets.

So, can it ?
Asked by: LasCrucesGuy
If you're running sprinklers make sure each zone has a different start time so both outlets aren't flowing at the same time, otherwise you'll get 50% flow to each one. The instructions don't really explain this.

When i hooked up the timer and turned the water on... The sprinker started.... even though i had it set for 5am

Asked by: Tammy
Tammy, There is a manual function that might have been turned on. Check the screen. If it is in manual the water will come on the minute it is turned on at the faucet. I have enclosed a picture of the device in setup mode so you can see all of the options that are available. If the item was defective return it to the store that you bought it and they will give you a refund or another unit. Make sure you installed the batteries right would be another thing to check.

Customer Reviews

Melnor Automatic 2-Outlet Hose Timer is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 475.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good timer It's a pain to have to get up early in the morning to water the lawn, so I bought one of these timers to take care of that chore. I'm not ready to invest in an irrigation system so this is a good way to get the lawn watered until then. While it does what it's supposed to do, I have encountered the leaking problem that others have faced. This problem was solved using Teflon tape, so keep that in mind if you buy this timer. I've also found that the current time is not always correct. For example, I have it set to water at 7pm, according to my watch. When I don't hear the water turn on at 7, I check it and the time is now three minutes slow. This happens a lot. I wish the unit allowed you to pick specific times when you want it to turn on. Instead, you're left to the number of hours between each watering. I'd like to water in the morning at 4, but then my second watering would have to be at 4pm because the max. choice is 12 hours. Despite the cons, it does what it needs to do.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very easy to use! This hose timer is very easy to use, even if the response to input is a bit sluggish. Typically once set up one does not have to interact with it much anyway. It has two independent timers one for each hose connection. Each timer can be set to turn the water on for a period of up to 240 minutes and this can be repeated in increments of 4, 6, 8, 12 hours or 1 through 7 days. You can thus set up a cycle such as: start at 10:00 and water for 1 hour and repeat every 12 hours. The start time can be any time you like but you cannot prevent it from turning on during the night and water every 4 hours during the day. There is also no weekday capability that would allow one to program it to water on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays only. The override to turn the water on manually is easy to use, you simply dial in how many minutes you wish to have it on. The rain delay feature is also similarly easy to use. If there is rain forecast for a couple of days, it is very easy to tell it to skip for 1, 2 or 3 days. The unit seems solidly built but the threads where the hoses connect are, however, plastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Got 2 of these & no problems I have two of these, 1 that's a year old and another I bought 3 months ago. I use them to run a micro sprinkler/drip system. Both have been great and I have not had any issues with them. One note: Make sure you get a pressure regulator and install it before the timer (I have a 25 psi one) as I believe that's why mine haven't leaked/failed. Also, I made sure I brought this in for the winter to avoid any freeze damage.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Only works well for one season Firstly a general remark. The only reviews that are really useful are ffrom customers who actually USED the purchased item for some time. Reviews stating "I just bought this item and it looks good" really have no value. I purchased this timer last season, to replace one I bought the season before and was leaking all around. Well, this one also just made it thru one season. Attached it today, and it is heavily leaking all around where the housing comes together. So, be prepared to throw your Melnor timer away every year,

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Three Strikes and You're out I've had three of these timers over the past three years. Each has worked well during the summer purchased to water my small garden. Each unit work fine when disconnected in the fall but failed to function after winter storage (batteries removed and stored inside). The on/off valve won't work and water comes out from every hole and seam. The company did replace my unit last year. I'm asking for yet another replacement. I will use them as long as they will send them to me but I'll never buy another.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not worth it Bought product 4 weeks ago to replace older Melnor timer that broke. Older model is no longer being carried at the stores. After 1 weeks of watering 3 or 4 times total, not per day, timer says battery is low, and it won't do anything until you put fresh batteries in. I thought the batteries were defective, so I put new batteries in and the same thing, a week or two later the indicator says battery is low. This happened several times and hasn't changed. It sucks the life out of batteries in no time. You spend to much money on batteries, very impractical. When it comes time for daily watering in the fall I can imagine it would only last 2 days with cycling off and on 3 times a day. It also lacks a manual override. You have to set it to use it manually, and you have to do this every time, unless you use it again within the time you set it for. Just not practical. Also setting the clock and the watering time is slow, especially for the technological times we live in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Three units working well. I installed three of these units last summer. It is very easy to program. There is an "ok" battery indicator. Two units are using the same batteries as last summer, the other I put in new batteries. Once programmed, they have all worked flawlessly. Never missed a watering, always shut off on time, batteries never went dead. I left them all hooked up to the faucets over winter, probably not a good idea and I won't do that next winter. One timer was leaking when I went to use it this year. Took it apart and used some crazy glue to repair it, now it's working fine again. I would definitely buy this product again, even if one of the units failed. No product is perfect ... that's why they have warranties. This product is as reliable and well made as any other.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't Waste Your Money After all the bad reviews on this product I should have just run the other way but no I bought one anyway. I've had this unit for about two weeks but only started using it this week. It worked as advertised for three days then stopped working. The LCD display keeps flashing and you have no control over the display, ie can't move the cursor or change any settings. I tried new batteries with the same result. Finally I left the batteries out of the unit for a few minutes and when I plugged them back in the unit began working. I set the time and hoped for the best. This morning the LCD is flashing again and the lawn did not get watered. I/m returning this to Home Depot and will look for a different product.
