how many do I need for a 16’x24’ shop with 9ft ceiling?

It really depends on whether you want to focus some light on task areas that may be along the wall or just generally light the area with fixtures mounted evenly down the middle. For the latter, 4 would likely be a good number, evenly distributed in the middle of the 16' dimension at the 3', 9', 15' and 21' marks on the 24' wall. If task lighting is needed along the walls to eliminate shadows, additional fixtures at each workstation would be good. There are similar Metalux units with the same form factor at smaller lengths that might be useful for that.

This fixture does not require a ballast. It supports a direct 120 VDC connection. Run Romex through 1/2" threaded sheet metal connector into top of fixture. Trim back insulation as you would any lighting fixture and wire nut accordingly. Pretty simple.

Not so good
I was anxious to put LED lights in the garage this weekend. Trusted Eaton/Metalux for a decent product. Wrong. Bought two hung fixtures, wired and reassembled. One fixture worked the other only half the lamp burned. Returned other fixture and had same problem. Reading other reviews I see this is common. Waste of a Sunday. Taking back both. Glad HD has a great return polocy.

The brightness of the light is great, but the first one I purchased had 25% of the led lighting out and I had to exchange it after spending a half hour mounting and wiring it.

Good light output; decent quality; good value.
I bought 6 of these at my local HD despite the fact that they weren't really what I wanted: I wanted something with a brighter, whiter light ... more like 5000-5500k than the "warm" 4000k color of these. But these were the only 8' LEDs that HD had and I didn't have time to order anything online and wait for it to arrive. So I brought these home and installed them at one end of my shop/studio on the 11'6"-high rafters. I spaced them about 6' apart, row-to-row with two per row. And WOW do they give off some light! It's like working in daylight in there thanks to 8200-8400 lumens each unit emits. They make no noise (unlike flourescents) and illuminate instantly when I flip the switch. Quality is acceptable. The metal housings are a thin/flimsy -- when punching out the knock-outs to insert wires, the housing twisted a bit, but I was able to straighten them easily. The plastic "tubes" seem fine, except the end caps don't stay on great. But let's be honest: once they're mounted, it's not like you'll be touching them, especially, in my case when they're almost 6' above me. Mounting isn't any worse than any other tube light units that I've installed. They don't come with mounting hardware of any kind -- no screws, no chains, no hooks, etc. and for ~$85/unit that seems kinda miserly. And the wire nuts are only really big enough to connect one 14/2 or 12/2 wire to the internal wire, which would make it hard to run any in series, so I used other wire nuts that I had. But overall, I'm very happy with them and will probably buy more. If they had the 5000-5500k color temp that I want, they'd be just about perfect for my needs ... and may already be for yours.

Good lamp but you need to buy a flat finish ceiling box cover, 2 grommets and extra wire. Then modify cover and lamp to be able to flush mount it to the ceiling. Body of lamp is not wide enough to cover electrical box in the ceiling. I have asked orange apron`s for an 8`LED ceiling mount lamp and I`m told this is the only one available.

Very close to a 'normal' fluorescent light bulb color. It took some effort to get the two halves apart during installation. I was afraid that I was going to bend the metal because it's a little bit thin. I wish the internal wires were a bit longer. Those are the bad things. The good things are that it runs very cool. It is very light in weight compared to traditional light strips. The low power requirement is the main thing that cause me to buy it. I like it. Hopefully, the LEDs inside of it will last for nearly forever since I seem to have to often replace a traditional tube in my other lamps. Disregard the twine in the middle of the photo. I used that to hold it up to a ceiling joist during installation.

WOW!!! This light made a HUGE difference in my garage. I had a couple older florescent lights by where I put this light and when they are on you can't even see their light if this one is on, it totally drowns out their light. Mine came somewhat damaged, but it still worked. I just had to straighten out some of the metal edges. The cover snaps on to the main unit and seems to be very snug. The light is a simple 3 wire connection.

This is a great energy efficient replacement for the classic 8' fluorescent fixtures. It's much lighter than the old fluorescent fixtures, and only 2 1/4" deep. Another really nice feature is that this fixture is rated -4F to 104F, so should be good for outdoor garage use with no flickering. The fixture uses two LED drivers, so if one fails you should still have light from the other driver - only one half of the fixture would light in this case. All in all a good replace for the old fluorescent tubes. And, the covers are plastic so no glass to worry about breaking. Unlike some other fixtures I have used, these plastic covers fit tightly and look like they will stay in place with no issues.

This is a vast improvement over my previous lighting setup. Because of space restrictions I had installed two single 4 ft. 40w fluorescent fixtures above the steps to light the stairway. Because these fixtures are narrower than the fluorescent fixtures I now have the equivalent of two 8 ft. bulbs which is double the light output except that the LED's are brighter than the fluorescent so the light output is about 3 times brighter. The installation was really simple. The Led assembly unsnaps from the rear holder and there are connectors on the wires and the ground wire. This makes mounting the fixture and wiring easier. You don't have to support the bulb fixture while you mount the ballast assembly and make the wire connections.

A well made and designed 8 foot long Metalux – Eaton LED light, great for a shop or garage. It was double boxed and was delivered without any damage. Made to look like it has two fluorescent bulbs with its two 8 long rows of LEDs under two rounded plastic diffusers. Great light quality at 4000K Cool White color temperature, and 8200 lumens of light output provides for great illumination of a large area like a garage. This LED light is not dimmable. Rated for damp areas, I think it would work well outside as long as it was installed under a patio cover as long as no water could come into direct contact with it. The cover snaps on and off easily, but not so easily that it will come off on its own. It has a center knock out under the removable cross brace for connecting your wiring in the center of the light, and it also has knock outs on the ends which is great if you want to daisy chain several lights in a long row. It comes with wiring nuts for making your electrical connections. Universal voltage input of UNV 120-277V.
