You will need some basic knowledge of electrical connections to get this guy properly installed. Total installation time was about two hours for us, as we struggled a little with sufficient power going to the 12v battery. But once we got that figured out it was very easy to program the opener to the remote and set the overall swing radius. We installed this on a new 12' panel that opens into our back yard. This is the maximum length gate recommended for this opener. Make sure you take your time to properly level the opener where it attaches to the gate and the post. Once you get the opener physically installed, the programming process is very easy. We also already have a Mighty Mule on our house garage door and we were able to quickly program one of the extra buttons on our remotes to this gate opener. We purchased a solar panel separately that we have attached to trickle charge the battery (which still needs to be placed into a battery box). This gate opener has a couple of built in features, one is an adjustable stop that will stop the gate when it hits something with a certain amount of resistance. This would hopefully prevent any accidents with a child getting stuck in the closing gate. There is also the option to turn on an auto-close feature which automatically closes the gate after a certain amount of time (2 minutes being the max). The gate feels very securely closed when in the closed position, I'm not worried about our dogs getting out of it. Overall seems like it will be a nice setup for us as we are constantly in and out of the backyard pulling the boat or trailers and it will be nice to not have to get out each time to physically open and close the gate. My only concern is that living in Colorado, we will need to determine how to keep the battery from freezing on the particularly cold nights.

This is an amazing device for operating a swinging gate. I wasn't sure about a 'light-duty' device being able to handle my gate (89” long,, 62” high), but it definitely can. It is powerful (albeit somewhat noisy) and able to power the gate, even over uneven surfaces (my gate swings over a section of lawn). Installation is fairly straightforward, but not all the parts you will need are included. For instance, there is no battery (but one is required), no battery box, and no wires to go from the trickle-charger to the controller. In fact, there is no specification for what size battery should be used – it just says automotive or marine battery, and specifies the drain at 2-5A. The controller causes a steady drain of 13.4 mA [0.16W] (surprisingly, with the controller either ON or OFF), so any charging will have to supply that current plus whatever current is needed to charge the battery. If you connect it to a battery without connecting a charger, it WILL drain the battery and possibly ruin it. Switching it to OFF makes no difference in the idle drain current. I used an 18 aHr battery, and it didn't have any issues moving the gate multiple times. The controller handled a momentary maximum of 8.3A while opening and 9.6A while closing without issue (although I need to fix that! so the drain isn't so uneven). Most gates will require some extra hardware in order to mount the operator parts. I was originally going to fabricate a framework from the top to the bottom in the middle of my vinyl gate, but ended up using a piece of unistrut horizontally instead. Since all the force is horizontal, a vertical frame would almost certainly have bent and warped under load. Keep in mind that there is a LOT of horizontal force on those parts. A tip from someone who didn't: Mount the operator as far from the door itself as possible, or you run the danger of binding the operator by colliding with the gate at either the open or closed position. (see the picture, below) There is a rotating part that can help to adjust for this, but it's adjustment is limited. If you can't find a position that works, then unscrew the pivot bolt and turn the part over to give you more options. Setting up the remote control is easy, but the instructions about setting switches should be ignored, as they don't apply to this controller. Setting the limits was very straightforward. - just follow the steps in the manual.

MIGHTY MULE LIGHT DUTY SINGLE SWING GATE OPENER SOLAR CAPABLE This is our second Mighty Mule gate opener. We needed one for another access gate to our property. The fact that they are solar capable and they are extremely well built is what sells on Mighty Mule gate openers. The solar panels are easily mounted and maintained. The opener itself is relatively maintenance free. If you are attaching it to a Behlen gate then you do need to modify the gate somewhat but that’s not an issue. Highly recommend these openers.

This is our second MM gate opener, and the difference between this light duty and our first, heavy duty model is pretty big. The first difference is the weight and length capacity. This unit is for a gate up to 12’ long and 300 lbs., which is pretty big and heavy, while the heavy-duty unit is for a 14’ gate up to 800 lbs. The light-duty one is plenty big for our gate, which is 12’ and <200 pounds. The other difference is what comes with the opener. This light-duty opener comes with one remote control and is meant to be hardwired to 110 AC, although it’s possible to use this with a solar panel - in that case it would require a separate battery box and solar panel. In contrast, the heavy duty opener comes with a controller box big enough for two deep-cycle batteries, three remotes, and one keypad controller for driveway installation. Both openers work with the Chevy MyLink buttons in our vehicles. The upshot: If you don’t plan to use a solar panel, this will likely work great. If you want a solar-powered gate opener, you might prefer the more expensive heavy-duty opener with the kit (plus separate solar panel) that can accommodate all the parts.

We had a gate opener that stopped working and we replaced it with this Mighty Mule 271. The first thing was the installation was very easy. It took about an hour and we had it up and running. The programming of the remote was easy, as well as the built in openers in our vehicles. We used the old solar panel we had on the old gate opener, which worked without any issues with the Mighty Mule gate opener. Setting the limits on the gate was not needed as the manufactured limits were set perfectly for our gate. This surprised me, and maybe we were just lucky, but it still was spot on. The dials to change the settings are easily accessible and would not be hard to change. Our gate is a 12 foot gate. We make sure the gate is balanced well and there is little resistance to open and close it, which will help any gate opener. The first improvement over our old gate opener was the speed at which the gate opens and closes. It was very fast compared to the old opener. A friend has an older model of a Mighty Mule opener and this opener is so much faster than even the older Mighty Mule. The distance at which this opener can be opened with the remote is farther than our older gate. We can push the remote and by the time we reach the gate it is open and we can driver on through without having to wait for the opener to finish opening. The alarm on the gate opener is very loud. The first time I turned on the unit it surprised me when the alarm beeped. Just so you are ready for the loud noise. If you need a good quality gate opener that is fast opening and closing the gate, this one works very well. I have several other gates on our pace that I will be getting another opener for those gates.

This opener was to replace a previous opener of the same brand that was just over 1 year old. The remotes for this one don't seem to work for as long a distance as the other. I also had to drill new mounting holes.
