Fixed length or variable? Low gloss of high gloss? The description says its random length but the specs say 47". Some reviewers says its fixed length, some say random? Which is it please? Also, the specs say it is low gloss but an answer from Millstead to another question says it is high gloss. Which is it please?

I will be putting this down myself in an office with concrete flooring. Will I need to put down any sort of pad between the concrete and the planks?

Will padding eliminate noise or provide more stability? Can I glue the planks directly to the concrete? What is recommended? Thanks, Cindy
Asked by: CP
No, the hardwood flooring does not need under layment.

Hand scraped Smoked Maple Natural 1/2 in. Thick x 5 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Wood Flooring (31 sq. ft./case) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wanted to match existing floor we already had installed. Does not look ANYTHING like the picture... Wanted to match existing floor we already had installed. Does not look ANYTHING like the picture. This is false advertising to the tee. Very, VERY disappointed!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very rich and rustic look It has a very rich feel but with a rustic look. Not 2 boards are the same. We love it!! It was what we were looking for to match the rest of our new house.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the color We ordered one box to see if we liked the color and it was beautiful. All the pieces were the same size in the one box so we were pleased with that as well. When we got our other boxes there were many different sizes which was fine it just took a little longer to install. We wish we would have gotten more rustic looking pieces like in the samples at the store. There was not much of a color variation either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful maple floor--just know that it comes all the same lengths--NOT RANDOM LENGTH The first thing you must know is that this wood is all 49" long, every piece in every box. NO RANDOM LENGTHS. Next, you can still achieve a fairly random length look by cutting the end pieces as follows: Cut any length (e.g., 18") off the end of a piece, you'll have two different lengths then to work with. We then hid the cut end under the baseboard, and built the row across the room. At the far end of the row, you put back the piece that you cut off (hiding its cut end under the baseboard as well), or you create more waste by cutting another small piece. I ordered this online and it was shipped to my house. Delivery was through UPS and was great. The product shipped very quickly. Our hardwood installer followed the above installation method and made every row start with a different length piece. This method goes a long way towards fooling the eye that you are seeing random lengths. Because of the beveling of each piece, you only want to cut the end off where you can hide the cut end under the baseboard. The next issue is QUALITY. Be sure that you check EVERY piece front and back for imperfections. Make a stack of rejects. Final note: the dining room floor is beautiful. Maple is a beautiful wood, and these pieces have all sorts of swirls and whirls which give a lot of visual interest to the floor. Keep in mind that this floor is not distressed looking at all--it has a clean elegant look which suited our dining room perfectly. We are going to buy more to install in the living next month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Looking product!!! I wanted an engineered wood product to glue down to a concrete slab foundation. This product looks great! The floor has great natural variation in the wood. The textured edges give the floor a very rustic aged look. I went with the 3" wide boards which come in various lengths to further ensure that warm and inviting look. I highly recommend this product if you want a great finished product. Be prepared for the compliments when your friends and family see it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the look of this floor! We ordered the floor on line and received it at our home in about three days. Shipping was free and the turn around was excellent. We purchased 37 boxes and had to return 6. We returned them to the store and were issued a credit on our charge card with no problems. The only slight complaint I have is that there were not enough short pieces in the boxes. Several boxes were all long boards, but we were able to cut a few and work around this issue.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Absolutely No Color Variation, Purchased for the Variation After reading the first review and looking at the photograph this seemed like the perfect aesthetic we desired. To be sure, I also looked at the samples on the Millsetad website, and called Millstead and spoke to a nice gentleman for at least 20 minutes about the color and characteristics of this wood. Hand-scraped was one of our priorities, but the most important characteristic we wanted was color variation between the pieces of wood. We flew in from outside the US to install this wood in an investment property on our vacation. The tight renovation and travel timelines made getting the right product a necessity. I did hours of searching before choosing this wood for the value, hand-scraped texture, and most of all the interest of color changes in the wood. What we received is 7 boxes of a monochromatic product that reminds me of 1970's paneling (almost chocolate brown with black along the edges). Hubby did 60% of a 17 X 10' room down in 1/2 a day and says installation is smooth. Quality of actual product seems good. We are builders/ designers and have laid a number of floors ourselves, no issues with unusable pieces. There are a lot of short pieces, but not problematic with our room lay-out. There was no time for us to return and order another product, which is why I called Millsetad prior to ordering to ensure that the visual representations on Home Depot's and Millstead's website were accurate. The gentleman at Millstead even said he had a sample floor in the area behind his desk, and it was the product that garnered the most interest at Trade shows. He described the product as being variegated, and I do believe the product he was accustomed to had the qualities we were looking for. Apparently the product color has since been changed. For the color, and lack of visual interest I am sick to have spent any money on it at all. Walking in the room and looking at this extremely boring solid color wood floor at over $5 a sq foot literally makes me want to cry. If you are looking for a monochromatic, slightly warm chocolate brown tone with minimal color character, then you might be happy with this product. The hand-scraping is quite linear, as the first reviewer described. It would look nicer if the scraping pattern were more irregular. It almost looks machine scraped due to the regular repetition of the pattern. You see the hand scraping when looking down the wood, but very little when looking across it.
