Questions & Answers

noise of floor

i have read a couple of reviews about the floor "squeaking" once finished. is this true? and why would that occur?
Asked by: limomma
If the flooring was not installed properly it could make noise. The flooring is designed to float. For this to work a space needs to be left between the side walls and the floor boards (this space is then covered by quarter round). If the gap is not provided the floor could make noise when it rubs against the walls. Also, a good underlayment material needs to be put down beneath the flooring, between the boards and the sub flooring. The underlayment will also ensure there is no noise when the floor "floats". One other possible source of a squeaking noise could be the sub floor itself, it may have been making noise which was not as noticeable underneath the previous flooring especially if carpet is being replaced by wood flooring. If the sub flooring is squeaking it can be fixed by adding screws or glue before the wood flooring is placed on top of it.

Hickory Natural 3/8 in. Thick x 4-1/4 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Click Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft. / case) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 37.

It is well engineered to lock together, but the surface is not completely smooth. The edges of the grain are consistently raised very slightly. Solid hickory does not do this.

I DO NOT recommend this flooring and strongly encourage anyone ready to invest in new flooring look elsewhere. We had this flooring installed last summer and, unfortunately, we haven't been satisfied. Although the flooring looks really nice, the durability has left a lot to be desired. Within the first couple of weeks we noticed large, visible scrapes/scratches. (Not scratches you'd expect under normal use.) The floors have accumulated other similar gashes despite normal-to-low traffic. Also, the corners of some of the boards have chipped off. Although the chips are small, I wouldn't expect this to happen to a quality product--especially within a year of installation.

After viewing this flooring in a friend's house, I decided to install in in my own. It is an excellent product. If you follow the instructions that accompany the flooring, it is fairly simple to install. This is the fourth floating floor, I have installed, and the individual boards locked together tightly. There were a variety of lengths and colorations of boards with very little waste. I kept 3 to 4 boxes opened at all times and separated the boards into 4 groups by lengths. I am very pleased with my floor. If it is as durable, as it is beautiful, I will remain happy. I would definitely recommend this product. I would recommend ordering 10% extra to insure you have enough flooring to complete the job.

High quality product....over 800 sq ft and not a single board we couldn't use. Solid construction, beautiful finish, precise fit....overall very well made. Variety of grains, colors and patterns in the hickory wood was more extensive than we expected, finished floor looks even better than we expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely pleased The floor has only been down for a week or so, so it is hard to give 5 stars for quality and value, but if it holds up as it has, they would be 5 stars too. Installation was a breeze and this was my first floor, I am a novice DYI. I did find a kit at the other big box store that had a rubber block for knocking the boards into place, as well as spacers, and a bar with a lip for tight installations-couldnt have done the installation without these items. Looks incredible, LOVE the variations in colors, I pulled from multiple boxes as others have said. Purchased a table saw (Dewalt), already had a chop saw and jig saw. -These items are essential. Got a dewalt multi-tool for Christmas, that was a huge help with door frames and such. My kitchen floor was not level though, we are on a concrete slab, had to put two 50lb bags of level quik to get the floor a bit more level, probably could have used two more bags, but I was afraid of raising the floor too much for the D/W and Fridge-wanted to ensure they were able to come out of their respective cabinets. Highly recommened this MADE in USA product! Tried, Lowes, and Lumber Liq, so glad I went with HD!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst floor ever I bought and installed this floor 2 1/2 years ago and noticed problems with it within just 2-3 Months (it was splitting and almost half of the edges of the boards literally were splintering) I tried to no avail to get the company to stand by their warranty and all they kept telling me was to contact Home Depot but they were no help, all they would say was I had to contact the manufacturer. I am so disappointed in this floor as soon as I can afford to I will be replacing it.
