Questions & Answers

I need to know if this wood needs to be tapped into place or simply layed down.

The row you are working on always seems to stick up on the long edge and does not lay flat, will additional rows pull the wood flat. Is there a suggested tool or hardware that will help with the installation.
Asked by: Garvie
It takes a light tap. I used a 4x4 block to tap into groove and then to seat good.

noise of floor

i have read a couple of reviews about the floor "squeaking" once finished. is this true? and why would that occur?
Asked by: limomma
If the flooring was not installed properly it could make noise. The flooring is designed to float. For this to work a space needs to be left between the side walls and the floor boards (this space is then covered by quarter round). If the gap is not provided the floor could make noise when it rubs against the walls. Also, a good underlayment material needs to be put down beneath the flooring, between the boards and the sub flooring. The underlayment will also ensure there is no noise when the floor "floats". One other possible source of a squeaking noise could be the sub floor itself, it may have been making noise which was not as noticeable underneath the previous flooring especially if carpet is being replaced by wood flooring. If the sub flooring is squeaking it can be fixed by adding screws or glue before the wood flooring is placed on top of it.

how red is this floor?

I am considering it as a first option but I want to make sure it doesn't have a red/orange feel to it, but rather a warmth to the wood tone.
Asked by: michael
Did not notice any red in this wood color. It looks medium dark at a distance, but standing upon the floor it appears lighter in color. Some boards are a bit darker than others, another reason to mix the boxes upon installing for a clean natural finish.

Hickory Natural 3/8 in. Thick x 4-1/4 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Click Wood Flooring (480 sq. ft. / pallet) is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Value and easy to install I looked for a while before selecting this hardwood. We were putting over concrete and so needed engineered wood. The price, hardness rating, 50 yr warranty, and ability to float or glue combined with the mid to dark tone is what sold us on this product. Free delivery by Home Depot was nice too. We glued some around foyer and doors, and floated the rest. Definitely firmer with glue, but is more costly for supplies and labor. The float portion is fine and feels more like normal walking over wood would feel. The click lock is tight, but we soon learned you have to tap it in slightly before it lays flat. problem with the transition pieces is you can't buy them online at Homedepot so I had to go to store and it took 2 weeks to arrive. We have a dog, and he doesn't scratch the wood at all. need to put felt under everything though for furniture I hired someone at $2/FT and recommend to do that if you use glue. Lot of back breaking work that I avoided was definitely worth it. can't go wrong with this product. I laid approx 1000 sq ft for under $7k with wood, supplies and labor

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Genisis Handscraped Hickory Coco This floor started out to be a difficult challenge to "lock and click" and it is not the worlds easiest floor to install as described by the manufacture. But after four or five feet of pure aggravation the product did become somewhat easier to install once you get the "hang of it". In the end when all said and done the floor does look amazing. I floated this floor over a slab and actually screwed my spacers to the wall because of the force and pressure needed to snap the boards together. I had a hard time snaping the ends together because the black slide tab that is suppose to lock the ends of the two boards together did not work properly all the time. It seemed to be easier at times to slide the ends in first and then push the length of the board into the board already installed on the floor for what it is worth. The boards do chip, scratch and splinter easily so you must be careful everytime you install a board.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product Good Value I purchased the Hickory Dusk engineered hardwood for just 133 square feet of area. I really like how the flooring looks. It has a richness to it, and I've had a lot of positive comments. I would buy this product again. Now for the ease of installation, I found that many of the boards were warped but would eventually fit. However, what I discovered is that a tapping block would be helpful, but traditional blocks would not work. I created my own with a small piece of the flooring, I used one of the damaged planks and cut off a piece about 8 in in length and then cut off the receiving end (female end). Then with a couple of taps the flooring planks fit together perfectly. I used a small power miter saw, a jig saw, a laser level, tape measure, and hammer. There were about 8 damaged planks in 7 boxes. It turned out great! Now if I can install the floor, I think that most people can, I am a 63 year old, over weight female.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Durability terrible I have had this flooring for 3 1/2 months and the look is beatiful but durability is terrible. I am not sure how this flooring receives a rating as a 4 on the hardness scale. If you drop anything slightly heavy on it, it dents and scratches very easily. I have been able to cover the dents with a stain pen but it does not hide the scratches. The flooring has a beautiful worn look but in lots of areas it is rough and can catch and pull up leaving, exposed light hickory. The other warning is that if you have slightly to very uneven subflooring, the floating affect is more like a trampoline. Very disappointed in the price and how it is holding up and we have only had it for several months. Worried what it will look like in a few years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from We were able to match the existing Millstead Hickory Honey... We were able to match the existing Millstead Hickory Honey that was installed in 2014. Slight difference in the sheen in of the new flooring but you can’t expect it to be identical given five years of use on the older flooring. Overall we are very satisfied.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Scratches too easily This flooring scratches very easily! The installation went well (no scratches, perfectly installed without walking on the flooring), but as soon as we started using the room, the floor has suffered an unbelievable number of scratches. The regular hardwood floors in the rest of our house (which is from the 50s) and the stair treads (which I installed and finished with polyurethane at the same time as I installed the Millstead floors) have a million fewer scratches than this one room! Whatever they are using to finish the surface of these boards is not at all durable; in fact, a basic polyurethane would be far better. The only saving grace is that the floors can be refinished, so when we do that it will finally last--the only thing keeping me from tearing them up and installing a better quality floor. If you don't believe me about this, take one of the scrap pieces that they give away at the Home Depot and take a ball point pen and write your name on the surface -- It will etch right into it, as if you were writing with a chisel in balsa wood. Good luck!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great floor We combined a kitchen and living room into one great room, and used the Hickory flooring to tie it all together. This brand has plywood layers, which is good for kitchens. It was laid at an angle, which really gave the room interest. This was done this way because it's an older house and the rooms aren't square, and laying it at an angle hides that. My husband said it was easy to install, it's easy to clean, and I love all the variation. Make sure you open 3 or 4 boxes at once, because some boxes have all dark pieces and some all light pieces, and it helps to really mix it up. The color goes with everything..we have knotty alder cabinets, oak table, another hardwood maple floor, oak doors, it just goes with everything. There were no random lengths, so I'm not sure why it's advertised that way. I do think more random lengths would have helped make the floor look less....manufactured. We installed it over an existing 1950's wood floor, and a linoleum kitchen floor. We have dogs and kids and I haven't seen any big scratches. I had checked out flooring stores...too expensive. And yet this floor was better quality than most other mid priced floors. Free shipping is great, and definately order more than you think you will use. You can return unused boxes to the store, which is very helpful, especially if you use the Home Depot credit card. I am very happy with this floor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tarkett Wood Flooring Rocks This real wood is gorgeous and very well made. Probably one of the best engineered real wood floors I have seen and is easy to install as long as you respect how tightly the locking edges should be fitted in order for it to get a good "snap". The color varies from dark chocolate to very blond "maple" and the boxes are randomly packed with mostly long lengths to very mixed lengths of longs and various shorter lengths, so it is best to open a number of boxes at any time in order to keep the randomness of the colors and lengths. Very good quality, hardness & color - I highly recommend this product to anyone interested in real wood planking!
