Questions & Answers

Can this be installed on a concrete subfloor?

It says under specifications that this floor can be installed on a below grade subfloor i.e. Concrete. Is this correct? I ordered a box and the instructions say floating floor or glue down. Just want to double check before I order more. What is the best way to install this on concrete?
Asked by: Misty
Yes, this flooring can be installed on a concrete sub-floor.

Underlayment for Nail Down

I am installing this nailed down over a wood subfloor that is above a garage. I'd like to have an extra insulation quality to the underlayment. Is there a suggested underlayment that will do this for me?
Asked by: rosebud
We do not have a recommendation for an insulating underlayment under nail-down flooring.

Top layer info

How thick is top veneer layer, how many times can this engineered wood be sanded and is the top veneer coated with aluminum oxide or polyeurathane.
Asked by: mak
The veneer is 2.5mm (1/10"). It can be professionally sanded and refinished one time. The surface is finished with a UV-cured, aluminum oxide enhanced urethane.

Do I need any kind of underlayment material?

I'm installing the "Millstead Handscraped Maple Chocolate 1/2 in. Thick x 3 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Hardwood Flooring (24 sq. ft. / case)" on concrete floor. Do I need to put any kind of underlayment cover? If I do, what kind of underlayment should I purchase?
Asked by: Nino
If this is a floating installation, you will need to install 6 mil polyethylene sheeting as a vapor barrier and an underlay pad designed for floating floors, or you can use a pad that has a vapor barrier attached. There are several options available at your local store.

Customer Reviews

Maple Chocolate 1/2 in. Thick x 3 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Hardwood Flooring (24 sq. ft. / case) is rated 3.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Looks great, but wouldn't buy again My wife and I bought this product as a compromise between expensive hardwood and unrealistic laminate. The Good: We loved the look and decided this was for us. After laying it, it still looks as good as we had hoped. Even though it's not solid hardwood, it gives the room the feel of it, and the quality from a visual appeal standpoint met expectations. The Bad: Don't buy this if you plan on installing it yourself.. I can't understate that opinion enough. The nature of the engineered wood left it more susceptible to warping, and if your floors aren't perfectly level (even in some cases if they are) the pieces will be a bear to "click" together and lend themselves to buckling. Also, don't buy if you assume this will be similar to the ease of working with laminate... again, the natural warping of the boards creates a need for a lot more sweat and elbow grease that laminate doesn't require. In the end, I wouldn't personally suggest this or go the engineered hardwood route again.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from not worth it Scratches up real badly. Don't even think about putting it in a high traffic area. Mine is in my basement kitchenette and we don't wear shoes inside the house. I put a plastic high chair on it and a plastic bucket on it while doing the backsplash,,,,,,,they absolutely destroyed the floor. Don't bother calling the company when it does scratch......they don't do anything. I'm already calling in a professional to refinish it. Oh yeah, at my cost.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This product has just the right amount of luster to bring life to my hallway. Product came in varied lengths and color variations, but blended well with the 8 boxes that my project required. The transition pieces were easy to install after being trimmed to fit by my installer. It looks great and was worth the wait of the special order. I have a dog and cats and so far, so good as to scratches.
