Questions & Answers

Is this flooring supposed to creak when walking on?

ok...
Asked by: Lee
No it should not. We used the premium underlayment and have been very disappointed with this product. It is too weak and flexes too much which causes the squeaking. The last flooring I had used was glued as each piece was installed this worked out great. That floor was 1/2" with an 1/8" wear layer. This Vintage Maple product is 3/8" with a 1/16" wear layer. We were fooled by the look of the wood which is nice but that is where it ends. This product is not suitable for flooring.

can black felt paper be used as underlayment between subfloor and this engineered hardwood

Asked by: Doug
I would not use an underlayment made for a roof on my floor. These floors are made to have some cushion underneath which helps when the floor floats over high/low areas that have not been sorted out with floor leveling products. The felt paper would not be enough cushion. I had used the plastic air entrained underlayment and that worked great for the fourteen years we lived in our last house. That said I would never use this Vintage Maple flooring again after our experience. This flooring scratches so easily you would not believe it. It will pit and dent just from putting a chair on it. We put felt pads under all of our chairs yet we still experienced some pitting which really looks bad. I am looking into to trying to finish over these places but the veneer is so thin you could easily sand thru it in a second. If I come across a way to safely finish these problems areas I will post it. In the mean time look for another company and product. This product is poorly made and should not be used on a floor anywhere. Don't be fooled by the "hardness rating" it is for the wood species not the product made with it. Fortunately this is not the case for all engineered products. If I could have found the flooring we had used in our last house I would have used it in this new one and saved myself money and aggravation.

Does it scratch all that easily? If i break a glass on the floor? My cocker spamiel paws ?Want in kitchen

Asked by: nwi13
You will be absolutely amazed at how easily this flooring scratches. I swear you can scratch it by looking at it the wrong way. We are shoes off, no pets, very careful and still see scratches everywhere. I don't know how half of them got there. This product was not scratched when we put it down. If you buy this product put down plenty of throw rugs...everywhere!

Does this item need padding?

Asked by: Marie
We used a very thin underlayment because we were putting it down over existing ceramic tile....used it in another room and laid it directly on the sub floor.......both are perfect.....love this floor

Vintage Maple Natural 3/8 in. x 4-1/4 in. Wide x Random Length Engineered Click Real Hardwood Flooring (20 sq. ft./case) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 51.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome flooring We bought this to cover 300 sq ft in a combo living/dining room. We used 13 boxes (with almost the whole box left over in the last box). We had a lot of diagonal cuts at the end, which used up more boards. My husband installed it and said it was "beautiful" as far as installation goes. It was tight-fitting, but this is what you want, he said. He did use his tapping block the whole time to fit the pieces in. I think there are 16 boards per case (14 or 16?). There are 22.5 sq ft per case, which is different than what Home Depot advertises in the description (they say 20? sq ft). We did this floor in about 2 full days of working. If we didn't have all the cuts at the diagonal, we would've done it faster. The boards of this maple flooring are definitely not consistent in color. Some boards are lighter with a different pattern, some are darker and quite rustic-looking. If you want a consistent, uniform floor that looks like the same color and pattern in each board, DO NOT BUY THIS FLOORING! We, however, did not want the consistent look throughout. We like the variation. It gives the room character. I'm attaching a pic of our room. We installed some Dupont walnut laminate in our old home (also sold by HD), and I like this maple flooring so much better. It looks so much more authentic (although we liked the walnut a lot, too).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to install, great flooring We installed this flooring in our bathroom and the natural red oak throughout the rest of the house (approximately 2200 sq feet). The product is super easy to install, just a rubber mallet, chop saw, and miter saw to cut around doors/jambs etc. The first two rows are the most difficult because you have to glue the first row and then snap the second row into the first row. I don't know why anyone would say that it is difficult to install. I am a 48 yr old woman and did two rooms by myself. The only issue I had was cutting around door jambs but then I just asked my hubby to do that ;-) A really important thing is to open every box you are going to need because they are random pieces. I didn't have any issues with the maple, but w/ the natural oak I did get a bunch of boxes that had small pieces (i.e., between 16" and 27") which makes it difficult to get the 12" span between the seams. Also, make sure your floor is super clean and level otherwise it will creak. That is the only reason I am giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Flooring We bought this flooring to replace carpet in a three-season porch and are very pleased with the result. Our place was built in the 1920’s and has been renovated a few times, so nothing in the room is flat or plumb. We chose a floating system because it was the most forgiving of odd room dimensions and temperate changes. After shopping around we chose Tarkett because of the quality of the wood veneer. It was much thicker and of a better quality than the other engineered wood choices. We also made sure to use a high quality underlay material and can happily report that the floating floor looks flat, square and doesn’t squeak or creak. Other reviews mentioned problems with the click system. But we found that installation become a lot easier once we glued the first row of boards together and get a few rows snapped in. It does take a bit of patience to get a feel for the snap and lock process but it’s a lot easier than other methods and didn’t require us to buy or rent other tools. We’re recommend this product to anyone in a similar situation.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Just don't walk on it and you'll be fine. We had used another manufacturers floating engineered wood floor product before so choosing to use a similar product like this Millstead Maple Natural seemed like a good choice, NO! it was NOT! The product is easy to put down but that is when it all goes wrong. We don't wear shoes in the house and are very careful with the floor so I am amazed at how easily it scratches. The flooring we had used before was almost fourteen years old when we sold that house and looked like new. This floor is five months old and is already showing major wear in areas. I would swear you can scratch it by looking at. If we were not going to sell this house is two years I would rip it out and leave at Home Depot's front door. The hardness rating is a joke and the finish is terrible. I called the company and was told that "all wood floors scratch"... not like this floor. This floor would be great as long as you never walked on it or look at it the wrong way! Steer clear of Millstead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful Floor! My husband installed our floor in a hallway, through to the kitchen and to our entry / laundry room. It looks amazing! He bought a few new power tools for the project but found it to be an easy install. A rubber mallet is a must have. He received many compliments on it. We are anxious to see how it will wear.
