Questions & Answers

What does this do to weeds?

We have a lot of patchy grass/weeds in the back yard because the previous owner had dogs that made bare spots in the grass - perfect places for weeds! Will this product make the weeds grow stronger as well as grass?
Asked by: 2sweet4most
Makes them grow like crazy. It is a low grade fertilizer afterall.

I think I may have over applied as my grass appears to have burnt, is there a way to undo this?

Asked by: shoeless
I’ve used Milorganite well over 15 years here in Florida. Never had any problems with burning. The only downside....very minor one, is you must remove any product from sidewalks and/or driveways due to the high iron content. I love this product for how it greens my lawn. I water less than my neighbors and my lawn is greener and has a healthier appearance.

I have heard that deer will not bother a garden when milorganite fertilizer is used, Any feedback on that?

Asked by: Eddie
My sister utilized this product up in CT. She as a lot of deer in her area, she said that the deer seemed to avoid her yard. Others that I have known say the same thing The manufacturer has a web site worth visiting, they do not advertise it as deer dterent because it not the primary use of the product.

36 lb. Slow-Release Nitrogen Fertilizer is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 1526.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is one of the best fertilizer on the market Hello everyone, I been doing garding for 17 years now. I started out using Scotts, I was not getting the results I wanted and the grass kept turning yellow. My Dad was using Milorganite. His yard was always pretty and green. So what did I do, I turned to Milorganite, and boy was I happy. The grass turned a pretty dark green. My neighbors all ways say you making us look bad. What I tell them is you yard could look like this too, If you put in the time and effort, that's what I do. My neighbors have different lawn services, Scott's, MRW and Tru Green. They always ask me how you get your yard so green. The answer Milorganite good grass seeds and aerate in the fall. I do it myself and get better results than a lawn service. Note this fertilizer works when the temperature is warm. Look at my pictures and tell me what you think. 17 years ago, I did not know anything about lawns, now I know just about everything, If you need help with your lawn., I can answer any questions you may have .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Safe, works. I bought a house and lawn was quite a disaster. Previouse owner did nothing for the last 5 years+ due to health issues. So fertilizer, re-seeding, aeration were long overdue. I bought this product and did not regret it. It comes with black pellets with some "soil-like" material included. It might not have as much nitrogen/phosphorus in it as some straight forward salts fertilizers, but there is one huge advantage for me: Overapplying (such as if you spill a small pile on the grass, or some leaked out as you filling your spreader) does not burn your grass like "traditional" fertilizers do. If you happened to apply to much all it does is that you grass would grow extra fast in that spot and be richer green. I do see a difference in my lawn appearance (greener greens, more grass) after applying this fertilizer for 2 years, fall and spring. Note that it does not have any weed killer in it, so for a while I was manually picking plantains and dendilions. Anyways, good product, works for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very special ingredient to make your lawn awesome! No fertilizer has ever given my lawn the glow that Milorganite has even though it is only 5% nitrogen. One of the benefits is the 4% water soluble iron that's in Milorganite. Another benefit is that it feeds the earthworms and beneficial soil microbes. In my opinion it does this better and improves the soil more than other organic sources because it is made from bio solids. I love Milorganite and will continue to use it. It is pricier here in Connecticut because it is made in Milwaukee which isn't close. Cities and towns close to Milwaukee do pay less for it or get it on sale more often. Still, I've yet to find a substitute for Milwaukee. It can also be used as starter fertilizer for new lawns. It feeds the new grass and helps it spread. Here is a photo of a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn I seeded only 50 days ago. I fed it twice with Milorganite and the lawn is establishing faster than any lawn renovation I've done in the past!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Fertilizer My wife and I bought our first home last year. I started using this fertilizer at a friend's recommendation and I need to say I'm completely satisfied. The product is cheap compared to other fertilizers, and it does better work than other fertilizers. I'm a young guy (26 y.o.) and my neighbors constantly compliment my lawn (St. Augustine) and ask me what I'm doing to keep it so nice. (Mind you, I water it and mow it adequately as well). I generally apply it every 2 months and usually 3 days later you begin to see the change in the grass. I also use this fertilizer with my trees and shrubs as well as my vegetable garden. All my plants are in good health. The only thing about it is it has a little smell from the organic compound, but its otherwise tolerable. Bottom line, I like this fertilizer and continue to purchase it. It does its job at keeping my grass healthy and well fed while not putting a big hole in my pocket.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This Really Works. My Lawn Is Greener Than Ever! I am a female DIYer. I refuse to pay for expensive lawn care services. I think that my green lawn can compete with the pros. See my photo taken on December 19, 2015. In October, I thatched; aerated; applied lime, Vigoro starter fertilizer, Milorganite, and certified tall fescue seeds; and top dressed with a combination of top soil and Leaf Gro. The water sprinklers were on daily for 15 minutes for 4 weeks for the grass seeds to germinate. In early December, I applied more Milorganite. It does not burn the yard and does not require watering. (The water sprinklers were off for the season.) This is an excellent product. You have to use a lot. You need to turn the dial of your Scott's spreader to 9.5. It took 4.5 bags to do the front and sides of my yard. The Vigoro starter fertilizer that I used was about $43 to do the entire yard. (I did not use the whole bag of the Vigoro.) Milorganite was about $65 for 5 bags at 36 lbs. each. (It will take another 4-5 bags for the back yard.) If you are going for results and not the cost, this is the fertilizer for you. (It is still less costly than a professional lawn care service.)

Have used Milorganite at the bag rate and had little to no result. Switched back to Lesco which is an awesome synthetic fert. Last season (in north FL) I had an area of lawn that just wasn't greening or growing well. It didn't respond to anything I put down so I figured the soil was deficient. I did a test on that area and put down about 2-3 times the bag rate of Milorganite. In about 3 weeks this area was filling in and greened up beautifully. Less top growth, thicker and deep green. Now, as Spring is near, this section is the greenest in the lawn. My plan is to Put down Vitamin"M" at triple the bag rate for my initial spring feeding and then bag rate monthly to see what happens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product I suffered severe damage in my lawn from a bad drought. Hired a lawn service to help. They apparently kept burning my yard with fertilizer. After firing them, i decided to try myself. I honestly began to think my sod was laid over a large buried boulder. No matter how much i watered it just wouldnt hold up. And bermudagrass is drought tolerant. Then i found this product! The picture below is my result after the first time i used it. Granted we got good rain also. But during the heat and dry of summer. It maintained this look! Hope this helps.

I have been using this on my lawn for some time and find it to be the best time release fertilizer I have used. Keeps my lawn looking nice and green along with good root development. I highly recommend this product. The unfortunate thing in the past year was finding it available, and Home Depot has been the only place I have been able to purchase it. I buy it ahead when I see it in stock so to have it when needed. Hopefully, this year it will become more available again.
