Milwaukee square - not so much
Was excited to get my hands on a mid-price square to take on jobsites. Got home and immediately compared the square against woodpecker's - off by 1/16th to 1/32nd inches even when compare to the "blue" and "silver" squares. Disappointed in Milwaukee - will return...

This is a very solid and well made square. I’ve used a number of squares over the years with the first ones being from 40 years ago when they were made of steel. That may sound good and indeed they were made to last. But they had some drawbacks other than just the weight. For one they tended to get dark with time and only a few minutes sitting on a concrete slab in the southern summer sun and you would swear you had framing square marks branded into your hand each time you picked those things up. These have the same sturdiness but I don’t see them soaking up the heat like those of old. Also the markings are easier to read. Those old steel ones tended to get harder to read with age. I like the red background and white lettering. It is just easy to read for me and my eyes are not what they once were so every bit helps. This has the solid build of yesteryear without the drawbacks of steel. This is not a thin piece of aluminum (see pic) and I see it holding its shape/square well over time. This is a quality square just as you would expect from Milwaukee. If you do a lot of layouts for walls, joists or whatever this is just the thing for the job.

The MILWAUKEE 16" x 24" Aluminum Framing Square
I have been using the same stamped steel 16” x 24” framing square for the past 30+ years. It’s got some rust and it’s hard to read, but it is pretty darn close to actually being perfectly square. From setting / checking miter gauge to fence square on my table saw and building woodworking fixtures to cabinet assembly I want square. This brand new product from Milwaukee checked out square against my old trusty one and it’s a beautiful Milwaukee red that won’t ever rust! Made of lightweight aluminum and has easy to read laser etched lettering that really stands out as you scribe your measurements. Milwaukee seems to give you what you need before you know you need it with 1” to 13” Scribe Notches to quickly mark lumber with a pencil for ripping a board and an angle finding feature for pipe. Thickness measured a generous 3/16” and the added thickness comes in handy for me in certain situations when my thin square slides underneath what I’m measuring. My only negative I wish the critical edges were a little smoother. There is some micro roughness from the cutting of the thick aluminum from the manufacturing process. Other than that it’s accurate enough for pretty much what you need in a large square and a pleasure to look at and use in the shop. Check out my photos.
