I have been using it to drive 16d framing nails, and it handles that job with ease. It definitely gives you an arm workout, but man, it drives the nails in just a couple swings. It has a nicely shaped handle that is very comfortable, and the "waffle" texture on the face makes it easy to drive the nails straight without worrying about bending them. There is also a magnetic nail holder that allows you to start a nail without risking damage to your fingers that would otherwise be holding the nail when you start it. I am very pleased with this hammer!

I think most carpenters probably are using nail guns for production work nowadays but if you need a good framing hammer either because you have a small job and don't want to set up a compressor and lines or don't want to drag out an expensive cordless nail gun, you will be happy with this hammer. It's 19 ounces delivers good, solid blows and the beefy hickory handle absorbs a lot of the shock to spare discomfort to your hand, wrist, and arm. It features a magnetic nail set if you like that feature too. This hammer is strictly for use on rough work like framing because it has the milled face that will mark the lumber with a nice imprint when driving the nail. The milled face does give you more of an edge when using the hammer for toe-nailing as it tends to grip the nail head better than a smooth face hammer. As with any hand tools, pick up the different styles available and see what they feel like in your hand. Some people prefer heavier hammers with a steel shank handle that's covered with a shock-absorbent grip. It comes down to personal preferences

This Milwaukee Milled Face Framing Hammer is the first framing hammer I’ve owned that had a hickory handle rather than a fiberglass one. It is also my first hammer with a milled face. I give an enthusiastic thumbs-up for the handle, as well as the anti-ring claw on the head, and I give a somewhat less enthusiastic endorsement for the milled face. The hickory handle imparts less vibration to my hand when I strike a nail. I wear gloves when hammering for extended periods, so I don’t need a cushioned or rubber-grip handle. Some of the reduced vibration could be due to the anti-ring design of the claw portion of the head, which is asymmetrically weighted. With a 19 oz head, the hammer is on the lighter side of framing hammers, but I haven’t noticed any lack of driving force even when hammering 16d nails. The milled face has a grid of pyramidal structures cut into its surface, making it look a little bit like a waffle iron. I haven’t done any toenailing with the hammer so I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the milled face at driving nails when they’re addressed at an angle. It does seem to help when I’m nailing left handed (I’m right handed) because I’m less likely to hit the nail head dead center. The milled face leaves a pretty noticeable pattern of dimples on the surface of the wood when the nail is hammered flush. You will definitely notice the dimples; this is by no means a finishing hammer. The hammer was assembled in China with components from the USA.

The thing looks like it would weigh a ton, but at 19 oz, it's lightweight and manageable through the day. I'm a female DIYer / odd job on the side, but I know this would stand up to the test of a framer. This hammer is well balanced allowing for powerful hammering without being worn out after a weekend of framing out a new bathroom and closet. The handle has a nice curve and axe handle end which eliminates slippage. There is a little gimmicky magnetic nail holder, which I don't see a need for Milwaukee to need to build into a real hammer.

All the ones I owned before either got loose at the handle or had not oomph ! I received this and I was amazed! It was very solidly built. But when I first used it I realized what it was to own a professional tool . The balance was great ,but the amount of force it would exert per blow was amazing! and the magnite attached to start nails in aukward places was a really Kool touch ! Buy it you'll LOVE It!!!
