Questions & Answers

Do I have to use Milwaukee bits for this? Or will others work without modifying?

Asked by: T8NHD
The router come with both 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch collets. Yes, any brand of router bit of 1/4 and 1/2 shank diameter will fit; however, the router bit’s cut diameter cannot exceed the opening of the router’s sub bases.

can I put a half inch collet on this? how difficult is it to find parts/accessories such as the half inch collet for this?

Asked by: DonB
It comes with both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets that are easily swappable. Many router bits are widely available in each size.

Can this model be attached and used with a router table?
Asked by: r3p5t1
Yes. It just depends upon your router table adapter plate has the proper screw hole locations that allow for the router bit chuck to be centered correctly within the adapter plate hole.

Confused about this model 5616-24 kit and the H-D description; why are there inconsistencies?

The description mentions a 1-3/4 hp and a 2-1/4 hp motor. Is it the 2-1/4 hp model? The description also mentions that there is no variable speed; however, "EVS" is variable speed. Does this model have a collet lock or does it require two wrenches?
Asked by: jimpg
The 5616-24 kit includes the 5616-20 router which is 2-1/4 HP, variable speed, comes with 2 wrenches, and requires both.

Customer Reviews

2-1/4 Max-Horsepower EVS Multi-Base Router Kit with Plunge Base and BodyGrip Fixed Base is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 68.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well-designed, quality, and Heavy-Duty My very first router, but by no means my first Milwaukee power tool. I'd been using my father's Bosch 1617 EVS for over 10 years. My first impressions after using it is that it's a well-thought-out design. The on/off switch is in a very intuitive location that is like right there when you're done routing a piece of wood. The collets and spindle are very meaty--indicative of large bearings and heavy duty design. The supplied wrenches are over-kill thick and heavy-duty, unlike my dads Bosch which the wrenches are bent because they're too thin. I love the soft start and there's an easy breakdown chart of the speeds to number dial relation on the router itself so you know what's ideal for the application and don't have to go hunting for the owners manual. The case is awesome and has plenty of room for a router bit storage. This is probably one of the best investments my wife and I have ever made towards home improvement. I'm sure it will last many years.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything you expect from Milwaukee except where it's made I have never been disappointed with a Milwaukee power tool going back at least 20 years and this one delivered as expected. The plunge base operates smoothly and I particularly like the spring-loaded plunge lock lever. It is within easy reach of the thumb, not too stiff to operate, and locks crisply. Unfortunately the same thing cannot be said for the depth stop rod and lock. Setting the rod precisely is difficult because it wobbles around a lot before being locked into place with the locking screw. Lastly, I didn't realize until after I bought it that it was made in China. One of the reasons I have been so loyal to Milwaukee over the years is that most of their power tools were manufactured (or at least assembled) in the USA. I suspect that I will own a wider variety of brands in the future as "where it is made" no longer factors into the decision as to which to buy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful, well made, rugged machine Used them for several months and very satisfied with the results and the machine. Bases are easy to swap, height adjustment easy and accurate. Like the step depth adjustment for the plunge base and the self centering cone to reset the base plate on center. The only negative so far is with the plunge base release. It seems to take excessive thumb pressure to release and is designed for a left thumb operation. Some slight arthritis in my left thumb means that I have to flip it around and hold the handles backwards so I can use my right thumb for release. Unfortunately, the handles are not reversible, which would be a nice feature. Since I only plan to use it in my home shop, the monstrous case will just have to sit somewhere. It would be a good case to take back and forth to a job site, but a good cardboard shipping box would have been enough for me, and probably saved $20 and a bunch of orange plastic. Maybe there should be an option to get it either way.

I was looking at 2 other brands and chose this Milwaukee for a few reasons. 1. The body grip. I use a trim router often and just by habit grab the router this way. This Body grip is very comfortable and holding the router this way give me a feeling of control with the router and better stability while routing edges. 2. The LDA Linear Depth Adjustment allows me do fine tune my cut with ultra fine adjustment. 3. The plunge-base literally float. It glides up and down with very little effort. It's like a finely crafted piece of machinery. The accessories includes a dust collection attachment, centering tool, 1/4" and 1/2" collets, T handle socket wrench if you mount the router in a router table and 2 wrenches to remove the collets or router bits. I've had this over a month and it has performs flawlessly. The 2 1/4 horse motor take anything thrown at it with power to spare. This is a 5 start router all day.

Here is whats better from Milwaukee vs Bosh, Milwaukee: 1. Rubber grips 2. WAY better to remove from plunge and fix base. 3. A lot less vibration 4. Comes with a centering pin 5. The body grip, yea you have to try it to believe it. Here is whats better from Bosh Vs Milwaukee Bosh: 1. The plunge feels smother has less resistance. 2. Box it came with 3. Router Guide Options 4. Soft start My personal opinion, Milwaukee wins.
