Questions & Answers

Recommendation for Close Quarter Stud Drilling...

The old 0375 Close Quarters drill was wonderful for drilling studs with spade bits. It had enough muscle to power through the wood, but not so much that you risked hurting yourself if the bit jammed. Clearly that drill wasn't really designed for years of 1" spade bit abuse, but it was so good at it! From comments here, it looks like the new Close Quarters drill has less power. That might be a strategic decision to keep people (like me) from abusing the drill, since it no longer has enough power for this task. Can Milwaukee recommend an alternative tool? The Hole Hawg obviously works, but it is heavy and often doesn't fit where we need to drill. Perhaps Milwaukee would consider designing a Close Quarters drill with super heavy duty gearing, and power like the 0375 in the future...

Millwaukee needs to bring back the 1/2'' version of this. This model (3/8'') is just too weak !

what is tight quarters? the short spade drill is 4" long. I need to drill in 2"X 8"floor joist cavity above 8" concrete wall in cellar to feed electric into 2"X 4" exterior wall above. There is a 2"x 4" sill plate which gives a little more space.

I purchased this drill to replace a much older Milwaukee/Sioux close quarter drill that I needed to send in for new bearings after 10 years of regular use. I am a wood turner, and use the drill to sand bowls while they are on the wood lathe. This new version of the drill has been an excellent replacement for the old model; same quality Milwaukee construction, strong motor and gearing, improved shrouding of the chuck, and better air flow through the motor. I expect this new tool to last as long as its predecessor. The only criticism I have of this new design is that the grip is a little bit large for me (I have X-Large hands), and it is sometimes tiring to hold the tool for long periods of time. Excellent co-molded grip, just a little large for how I use this tool. I bought my original close quarter drill for drilling joists and studs for installing electrical wiring and plumbing. This new machine would be even better than the old one for this function.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very balanced. Very comfortable to hold and the trigger is smooth, but the depth of the head{chuck}is a little on the thick side, my other brand is shallower but not near as easy to use.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Absolutely Terrible - Do NOT Buy This! I used to tell everyone how great Milwaukee brand tools were.... That the additional cost was worth it, because it would last long enough for your grandchildren to inherit them... NOT anymore. Luckily I bought a bunch of Milwaukee tools before the company started making complete trash... The many Milwaukee tools I purchased between 20 and 5 years ago have been to h3ll and back and are still running in perfect condition. I mean, I seriously have abused these things beyond what anyone would consider to be reasonable and they still work like the day they came out of the box. However, the Close-Quarter Drill I purchased a few days ago was an effing joke. I drilled four 1" diameter, 1.5" deep holes in soft framing wood and the gears started grinding. A few more holes and the gears were skipping and banging. THIS IS THE WORST DRILL I HAVE EVER TRIED IN MY LIFE! I've been happier using Black and Decker drills (it makes me sick to my stomach to admit this). The sad thing is that I now don't know where to turn for good drills. Milwaukee Tools used to be my ONLY choice for drills, grinders, and certain types of saws. I work professionally in a wide range of manufacturing industries and I expect my tools to last. I seriously feel like I've lost a long-time friend. I will no longer buy, nor recommend Milwaukee Tools... They are complete junk. Consider yourself warned.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad design I had purchased and older Milwaukee close quarters drill and abused the living daylight out of it, it died after 14 years of abuse (I have the receipt to prove it). This drill seems similar in quality to me however the switch to go forward and reverse is very difficult to change, I feel like I almost have to break the trigger to go from forward or reverse. In addition the switch is on the trigger so I caught myself several times starting the drill when trying to switch to reverse. I also agree with some of the folks the cord should come straight out the bottom of the tool.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Drill I bought this for sanding my wood turnings, it did not last long with all the dust, had to change the bearings, when I called support to complain they asked what I was using this Drill for & I told them SANDING!, the support person told me right away that this is a drill, not a sander... he is right, I should not be complaining about problems caused by doing something it's not designed for.
