Questions & Answers

Stainless steel could mean any number of steels. What is the specific steel used on this knife?

Asked by: Jb
Try asking Milwaukee and when you do please ask the country of origin. If I were to guess I'd say a very hard version of AUS-8. Best way to find out is to buy one and send it to a metallurgist. Should be less than $100 to get chemistry and hardness done.

This is an issue. I like the knife handle, The steel is likely something around a 420 steel as I've owned other Milwaukee knives.

I like how light weight it is and it feels really good in the grip. I came pretty sharp right out of the package and has held it's edge despite being batonned into wood for a while. The only thing I really don't like is the sheath. The locking mechanism that holds the knife in is super difficult to use. When you pull the knife out it wants to bring the sheath with it. Plus it is super difficult to get the knife out one handed. Your milage may vary. Once I get a new sheath, I will be carrying this knife all the time. I also wish Milwaukee would have provided some more information as to what type of stainless steel they used in making this blade.

Just like everything else Milwaukee makes, this fixed blade knife is made extremely well. Really comfortable in the hand, and made to last. I really think that Milwaukee had many different uses in mind when they designed this knife. Its not only great for use out in the shop, but any hunter, Fisher or outdoorsman will get tons of use out of this The sheath is mad of hard plastic and has a strong belt clip that will stay attached to your belt even during heavy movement. The tang also goes the hole way through the handle instead of a two piece like many of the others on the market. The blade is stainless which is a big plus, you can shape it when needed and I would also say that its even dishwasher safe. Not to mention, the grip is very comfortable, and has a great grip action to it. The lanyard hole is also a nice touch. I couldn't be happier with this knife, and think Milwaukee did a great job with this knife.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The weight and feel are perfect I really like everything about this Milwaukee 4 in. Fixed Blade Knife. The weight and feel are perfect for most utility knife needs. The grip is comfortable with or without gloves. The packaging is put together so that you have a good view of the blade and the plastic sheath. The knife was very sharp right out of the package. The sheath is a durable molded sheath with belt clip and it grips the knife well, so pulling the knife out may require a good tug. I have been using knives since 1976 and even made some custom knives in the early 2000's. I also sharpen knives as a hobby so I think I'm definitely qualified to review this knife. For $20, this knife is probably the best deal out there for a 4" fixed blade. I have now bought 2 even though I really only need 1. Since Milwaukee doesn't list what the exact steel is, I assumed it would be a poor performer. I have used this knife several times a week for the last 4 months. Upon receipt it was pretty sharp with a surprisingly good secondary bevel, straight out of the box. I used my Ken Onion Work-sharp belt sharpener, followed the factory grind and went through the belts I have all the way to around 1200 grit. I then used a leather stropping belt with green compound. The knife was then very sharp and shaved arm hair effortlessly. What I was most impressed was when cutting printer paper at slow and fast rates, there wasn't even a hint of a minor burr anywhere on the blade (this generally means blade will also get dull fast, this was not the case). This blade just cuts effortlessly along the entire blade. About the easiest knife I have ever sharpened. Keep in mind I have a Wicked Edge Sharpener with all the bells and whistles, but just using the Ken Onion belt sharpener worked really well with very little effort or time. After using it one day to totally cut up about 140 boxes (20 minutes of non stop cutting), I was surprised the blade with still decent sharp. To bring it back to peak shaving sharpness, I just took a half dozen passes over the leather stropping belt on my Ken Onion Work-sharp and the blade was back to peak sharpness. I carry a Spiderco Para Military 2 in S30V steel but always use this for real cutting jobs when I have it handy. If you hand sharpen and strop your blades, this knife will be easier than most to bring it to peak sharpness and keep it there. To me, it seems to go from decent sharp to scary sharp when you strop it with compound. Lastly, I find the handle comfortable with reasonable grip, not sure if it would be overly slippery if you got blood on it when skinning an animal. There really isn't a traditional guard but the blade seems very stable in my big thick hands, not sure if my hand would slide down it if you used a stabbing motion. Lastly, the sheath is a nice way to protect the blade and can be used to carry it, but if you plan on taking it into the outdoors and using it in rugged environments in which you may take a bad fall but want to ensure your blade stays put and doesn't accidentally stab you or get lost, you will want a stronger sheath. Hope this helps...

This is a good addition to my collection. I am a Milwaukee fanatic, so it was nice to see something come from them that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. The blade is thick at the spine, it has a full metal tang and I am a fan of the drop point blade style. The sheath is plastic and the belt clip is OK. It seems like it is going to break, like all the Milwaukee ink all marking pens clips do, but time will tell. I wish the front quillion, finger guard at the top of the handle protecting you from the blade, was larger but the grooves in it should help you keep your fingers from contacting the blade. It is sharp from the get go. If this knife is too small for you Milwaukee also makes a 5" fixed blade as well.

Milwaukee is really expanding their product line, This is a great knife, Its got a 4 inch drop point blade which makes it good for anything from skinning a deer to using it like a chisel with a hammer behind it. Its made from stainless steel so it wont rust no matter how long you leave it sitting in your tool box or at your hunting cabin. The blade is a full length piece of steel that goes all the way thru the handle to the lanyard hole , The sheath is solid plastic so you can clean it easily with soap and water, the knife as well. Has a great grip and fits the hand well. Overall length is 9 1/2 inches.. This would be great in any toolbox, survivalists bug out bag or just to keep on your person, stays sharp and resharpens easily when needed
