Q:What is the shortest length of the # 8 countersink drill bit will protrude past the countersink?

Answer This Question

A:  From the tip of the bit to the beginning of the countersink on the #8 is approximately 1-3/4” give or take a millimeter for production tolerance. The shortest I can comfortably bring the countersink is 1-7/16”. However it can be taken as short as you’d like at the risk of damaging the upper portion of the bit.

by|Jan 15, 2022

A:  Penetration depth is adjustable as all bits contain an adjustable set screw.

A:  I would wager to say no! This is intended to be a woodworking bit for soft & hardwoods and other soft materials. Twist drill for metals typically have consistent size from the shank to the tip.

Insane amount of deflection and wobble
These Counter sink bits have a lot of deflection and wobble (see photos) I fear this will ruin the hole or break the bit with a deeper hole. Waste of $30, this is was noticed on all 3 brand new bits, rest of my Milwaukee drill bits and counters bits all work fine.

            Expected More for the Price
Drilling into pine furring strips causes excessive smoking. Drill bits get so hot that I'm scared to drill more than twice in a row. Drill bits are discolored after just a couple of uses. Is this normal?

              Disappointed...
I was looking forward in using this countersink bit set. However my first hole in some 2x4 broke off the bit and sorta ruined my project as it's embedded in the wood now. Sure I'll take it back but who wants to do that when they have a project? I've never ever snapped off any drill bit in wood and I'm middle aged. So now I gotta a) get in my car, b) deal with traffic, c) deal with a line in returning this. They should use a harder material like titanium Shockwave drill bits.

My daughter and I have been remodeling our kitchen. I have a collection of very old countersink bit sets that are very old. They don't work very well and some are even broken. We have had to drill countless countersink holes. Been frustrating at times with the old bits. These are nice bits. Come in the three most popular sizes. Are depth adjustable for different lengths of screws. The drill bits are tapered so the screws fit tight in the drilled holes. Made out of strong material so should last a long time. Comes with an allen wrench to adjust for depth.

When it's time for setting screws in a fine piece of furniture you need to have the right countersink to match the screws you use. This set gives you the countersink you need to complete the job. The sizes included will be useful for the most popular sizes used. They are adjustable in length and the cutting head does an excellent job on the countersink shoulder.

More well made quality Milwaukee tools. This Milwaukee Countersink set (Model 48-13-5003) includes three bits for common screw sizes (#6, #8, #10) with tapered bits and depth adjustable, 4-cutter countersinks/counterbores. The countersink head is held in place by opposing set screws, meaning two screws must be loosened/tightened when adjusting depth. There are flat spots on the bit shank for the set screws to press against, reducing the chance of bit slippage. Of course those flat spots aren't present if the head is slid down the bit shaft to decrease depth. I never like using these type bits at less than full depth because the screws clamp down on the bits spiral edges, dulling the edge and allowing space for wood fibers to collect. Unfortunately that can mean extra long holes even when using short screws so depth adjustment is sometimes mandatory. These bits are no better or worse in that regard. Someone needs to design a high-quality, fixed-diameter, long shaft bit with flat spots and a 4-blade cutter head. While I found similar features on another brand's countersink set, two things improve the Milwaukee set: the flat spot on the shanks and the etched size markings on the hex shank. In use, I found the 1/4” hex shank holds securely in a drill/driver, but it wobbles in use. In a chuck, the bits run true even at high speed. In both hard and soft woods, the bit advances slowly and tends to burn the wood, leaving charred fibers within the spiral grooves and between the countersink blades. The holes are fairly clean though, with little tearing in the countersink, especially when drilled at high RPM. I'll never use the simpler single-cutter countersink bits again. The tapered bits are replaceable but I couldn't find a ready source for them. I suspect other brands (or correctly sized straight bits) could be used in a pinch. These are good bits, though slightly more expensive than other high-quality, name brand sets. The cuts/holes are of similar quality, at least in initial use, so you pay extra basically for the markings and the flat spots.

Milwaukee #6/#8/#10 Steel Countersink Set (3-Piece) This is a versatile set of counter sink bits. The 3 pack gives you a #6, #8 and #10 bit. The bit size is laser etched on the hex shaft making it easy to check bit size. With the 1/4 inch hex shank tool change are fast and easy. The counter sink base is attached to the bit / hex shaft by 2 grub screws. By loosening the grub screws you can adjust how deep you want to drill the tap hole before the counter sink hole. These bits are some of the sharpest I have owned.

This is a great set of countersink drill bits. I used st scoff at using these as I was able to achieve the same results by using two different drill bits, one for the shank of the screw and a larger bit for the head. The disadvantage was it required changing bits and making sure I was aligned properly TWICE on each hole. Now that I have this set of bits, it's one and done. The set comes in widely used bit sizes to meet very nearly all of your fastening needs. The bits are of good quality and they are tapered to accommodate the shape of wood screws (something you don't get with normal drill bits). The one CON I have is that the #10 bit does seem to bend easily. I accidentally struck the 2x4 I was drilling with the bit installed in the drill and I damaged the bit. It now has a small wobble. My bad for not being careful. This isn't an issue if you are careful with the bit installed.

Uniquely designed and useful drills for a large array of wood working projects. These counter sinks from Milwaukee have a unique design. The pilot drill bit is tapered down from start of bit to the tip which gives the screw more wood to bite into and the three cutting blades make countersunk holes smooth and clean. The quarter inch hex shank allows this bit to work in impact drivers while also helps prevent slipping in the chuck of drill/drivers. Having a set of countersinks in the three most used sizes of screws allows anyone from homeowners, DIYers to finish carpentry contractors to tackle any task/ project quickly and easily. with different size screws. I have used these countersink bits in pine wood with no major complaints aside from the occasional burning which could be due to the lousy lumber that is sold these days. When I used these bits to drill in laminated plywood each of the three different size countersinks made a clean hole whether just drilled that screw head was flush to surface or completely countersunk where a dowel, bung, or plug is put into hole. Each bit also has set screws that can be loosened to remove countersink head from shank for easier cleaning and bits can also be used alone to drill holes that do not need to be countersunk.

This is a precision set of countersink bits. They are comparably priced with other quality bits. The bits have tapered ends that allow you to precisely and easily drill your holes. The set comes with three different size bits: 9/64", 11/64" and 3/16" and an allen wrench for adjusting and tightening your bits. I used these bits to build a kitchen cabinet and they worked great. I counter sank all the exposed screws heads and used wood plugs to hide all the screws.
