Was great for a few minutes... Then it MELTED!!!
So disappointed! The Milwaukee engineering department is really falling off a cliff! This thing melted down in a 60 degree F cold climate during its first use. Clearly there's something wrong with the temperature regulation and/or the plastics selected. What are you guys doing over there?!

Use tool for short periods at a time
I didn’t know that this was a common issue until that happened to me. Are use this to build drones, which can take two hours or less depending. I also do electrical wiring on cars. Awesome tool if they made the collar metal. After A few months, my collar melted also. I sent an email to Milwaukee never never got a response back. I hope I get a response here.

Plastic coupling is the downfall
Everything about this Soldering Iron is fantastic, except the plastic coupling that holds the tip in place. It lasts for about as long as expected for a 12v Soldering Iron, it heats up well for not having the ability to regulate temperature, and ergonomically it fit my hand very well. With how common this issue is I am honestly curious why Milwaukee is continuing to sell them. I filed a warranty claim but I'm not even sure I will follow through with it, I will only end up having this problem with the next one. If this review let me upload a video I would, the wiggle because of the loose coupling makes it impossible to solder safely.

As some others have stated, the sleeve holder fails and causes the the soldering tip to wiggle. Good design, otherwise.... it's too bad one weak link caused it to fail under light use.

This is a nicely made soldering iron, yes it's heavier than a corded one, but then again lugging an extension out to the car or tractor to solder was always a pain! I like the 3 position head and that it comes with a pointed & 1/4" flat tip. To move the head you only have to push the one black button on the left of the tool (at the joint)and that releases the head to move. You can actually use the tool in-between the click stops if need be, there is enough grip that the head will stay put. The iron is 11 5/8" when straight. At first I thought there were no instructions, but they are hidden at the bottom of the package as it hangs on a peg and folded to a 2" square . They are writen in English, French & Spanish. They need to be cut out from the packaging. Others have asked about using this iron with other tips, like for wood burning & cutting plastic etc... I don't believe so as the tip doesn't screw on like most irons, it goes over a rod (see pics below), so the back of the tip is hollow without any threads inside. HD sells both replacement tips on their website. At this price point I think it's a bargain, yes it would be great if it had some kind of temperature control, maybe in the future? Right now it's 400- 750 deg. The tip heats up very quickly BTW, like 25 seconds...The slide power switch can be momentary by pushing the switch forward or locked on by pushing it until it clicks. To release, you push down on the back end of the switch. I like that it has a red light that stays on until the tip is cool, a nice safety feature (instructions say 30 min. to cool). As with all the M12 tools there is a battery level indicator. I should also mention that there is a small LED work light that's very handy! Overall, this is a nice soldering iron & fills a need, I just wish this tool was available 20 years ago when I was installing car stereos, fixing the RV & fixing tractor wiring!

A great tool as long as you realize that it is a compromise that is designed for portability. It definitely will not replace a full soldering iron station, but it is much better in my opinion than using a butane soldering iron. I think that where this item will really shine is in an automotive repair where there will be no cord to get in the way nor will there be any butane exhaust or flame to worry about. The item did heat up pretty quickly and had no problem producing enough heat for the wires I tried up to 16 gauge. The battery charges very fast and provides ample power for several soldering jobs. It's two biggest cons are it's large size and lack of temperature control. It's two biggest pros are it's lack of cords/butane and the fact that you can sit it down on it's side instead of needing a holder for it. I only used the iron in it's straight position at the workbench, but I image the ability to change the handle angle will come in really handy if you're laying in a floorboard repairing a wire in a car dash. The case has enough room to throw in some solder and a sponge, but the tool and charger don't fit very well. I wouldn't recommend this as your first and only soldering iron, but it's portability and ease of use make it a worthwhile addition to your toolkit.
