Yes it will.work. that is the great thing about the M18 line. It just won't last as long as a 9 or 12 ampere hour battery

The high output XC 8.0 AH battery would indeed suffice in getting the job done. You could also go with the 12.0 AH battery, but keep in mind that will add some extra weight. 8.0 weighs about 2.25 lbs and the 12.0 weighs about 3.35lbs
The battery will keep the fan from touching whatever surface you set it on as long as it's flat it's pretty stable
