No way to tell without opening the box and inspecting it. Best to wait until the Gen 4s come out which should be soon probably within the next few months.

Yes. Not all of your drill bits are 1/4" drive and some jobs might not be appropriate for an impact.

recommended drill bits for screws and drilling?

Asked by arthur January 19, 2021

Answers

Yes, I recommend drill bits and other bits for drilling and screwing/unscrewing lol. Just kidding. It's a personal preference. Some people like 2" bits and longer. For assembly I found a hint to use 1" bits and a magnetic extension helpful, because the longer bits don't hold the screws as securely. Drop a screw into a grill and you'll see what I mean. Some applications must use a long bit to get to the screw location. The extension is too fat to reach.

Has the problem with the collet releasing the bits been addressed by Milwaukee?

Great question. Yes I believe so, but I'm a handyman now, not an assembler. If the bit won't come out, tap it on a hard surface and it typically will release. Also, this is a good motivation to use a short extension.

Has the collet issue been fixed yet?

No not yet and no one can get a straight answer from Milwaukee. Reportedly the generation 3.5 has been fixed but it's impossible to tell the difference on the retail box as to which generation you are getting.

Answer

No it still hasn't been fixed and Milwaukee hasn't been transparent on this issue. Supposedly the fix for the collet is adding 2 ball bearings and that is the being called the generation 3.5, but there is no way to tell the difference on the retain box between the version 3.0 and the 3.5.

A must have for any trade
This is simply a must have for any trade I am a plumber by trade and a carpenter by hobby and I use this impact both on and off of the job, and it handles both perfectly. I love the variable speed where if I am using it with drill bits I have a higher speed setting and if I am using it on a fastener on wood I have a slower speed so I don't split the wood. The ergonomics on this impact are so good that this feels like it was made just for my hands. It's so light and small that I can carry it around my belt and it's not a burden and it's small enough to get into tiny spaces but doesn't lack any power. This impact does pack a punch I've pulled lug nuts off of cars with just this tiny impact and it's durable as well, I've dropped it from multiple ladders and it's never let me down. This really is the best bet if you're looking for a new impact driver.

Just switched over to Milwaukee from makita. My gen 3 "misfires" sometimes making me have to release the trigger and pull again. Pretty disappointing for such an expensive tool. All the buttons sit right under my pinky. I've accidentally switched to self tapping mode several times, then having to stop and click the button (which is pretty hard to see or feel) 3 times to get back to work. I strapped out a basement today for a knotty pine install, and ran in to these problems multiple times in 9 hours of almost constant use. Along with the collet problem that I've had happen once so far. I can't recommended this tool to my friends for these reasons.

Overall a great product made for the harsh reality of the construction world. Within a day I dropped it ten feet off a ladder straight down to a concrete slab and it was light not happened, other than a few surface scuffs of course. But overall Nothing beats how compact and power this impact is. And the adjustable speed control is awesome.

Oh impact drivers, where have you been all my life? If you're like me you probably spent time with just a drill/driver and thought "this is good enough" it can drill holes and screw in hardware what do I need another tool for? Well, ignore that version of you and jump into the impact driver game if you haven't already. This tool makes life so much easier - There is a ton of torque and the impact feature helps install and remove hardware significantly better than a standard drill/driver. There are several speeds to dial in your task between a delicate screw install and "all out assault lag screw right through a 4x4". There is even a sheet metal setting that uses wizardry to moderate speed to help set and then sink hardware. Battery life has been excellent with the brushless motor and larger batteries. The led light is great and helps illuminate your work space. If I had a slight knock it would be that things feel a little on the heavy side with the battery but I'll chalk it up to quality materials and durability. I've already had a few drops and bumps around the shop with no ill effects.

This is a really great impact driver kit - well engineered/designed tool, two 5 amp-hour batteries (very adequate) & charger, plus a nice durable hard plastic case to hold it all - including a slot for the instruction manual or whatever paperwork. I've used this tool often for a few months now and I still like it a lot. It's quality all the way. The tool will handle any 1/4" hex bit and easily loads with one hand just by pushing the bit into the chuck. See the photo with a special screw driving bit installed. To remove the bit, just pull back on the ring around the chuck. With a little practice you can also remove the bit with one hand. When you pull the trigger a LED turns on and illuminates the tool's tip and stays on for 10 seconds after releasing the trigger before fading to off (see the photo). This is a nice touch and is actually very useful, especially if you're driving a lot of screws in rapid succession such as screwing concrete board to subflooring prior to installing marble or other stone tiles where you're driving hundreds if not thousands of screws (see the sample "test" photo). The "impacts" sets the screws in the concrete board to just the right depth - with a little practice it's easy to control this, and the battery just keeps going. I was impressed. The brushless motor is a good feature, and packs a lot of torque for its relatively small size. The tool has three selectable maximum "speeds" (RPM and IPM - impacts per minute), plus a forth selection specifically designed to drive self-tapping sheet metal screws. This feature is really useful when doing duct/sheet metal work since it keeps the screw from stripping out due to being over-driven. When you're in this mode and pull the trigger more than half way, the driver will stop automatically when the screw is fully seated. Maximum RPM is 3600 and IPM is 4300.

Milwaukee has hit the ball out of the park with this impact driver. Self-tapping screw mode is a game-changer, and it has the normal 3 speeds as well. This unit is ¼” shorter than any other impact driver out there, so if your hand can fit in the space, you’ll be able to drive the fastener. Milwaukee engineers and builds the motors in house, so they added more copper with precision winding, so 30 percent more copper in the motor, and 4600 impacts per minute makes driving fasteners a breeze. Working in remodeling, driving into old timber can be tough. This impact driver gets lags into old lumber easily—upgrading ceiling boxes to fan-rated boxes often required a pilot hole before for me, but with this driver I’m able to drive the lags without a pilot hole, without stripping out a head (I’m guilty of using a Philips bit instead of a nut driver). The fourth mode is for self-tapping metal screws. This seems to have a soft start to get the fastener centered, then drives quickly and slows down a bit before stopping completely so it doesn’t strip out the metal or shear the head. I don’t do much HVAC, but those guys need to upgrade today. I do appreciate that fourth mode as I do a bunch of little stuff with self-tappers. Overall, I’m more than pleased with this tool. Two batteries, a charging station, great belt clip and a bit holder on the side, and a great case. The over molded handle is expected and feels great, and the speed this thing drives with is awesome. I highly recommend this tool.

I have owned a few impact drivers, but this one is the most powerful I have used yet. The torque is almost unreal and lasts through the full battery charge. In 2 months of use I have not even charged the battery. I am not a daily user but at least three times a week. The Two M18 fuel batteries comes with a charger and a case. I have driven drywall screws and cabinet screws with ease. I am very impressed compared to other brands where the battery died in one month, permanently.

My older electric drill ( bought 11 years ago) overheated when i put together a metal railing, it actually smoked, so i selected this cordless tool by Milwaukee becauses its not supposed to have that problem due to its REDLINK PLUS intelligence, prevents damage to the tool and battery due to overloading or overheating Our uses are pretty simple for now, limited to what we can do around the house so something this professional is a bit intimidating but were getting used to it. Has a convenient LED automatic light at the front & is smaller & lightweight which is a real asset for me because i do a lot of work in a shed. Also like that i can control the speed ( 3 speeds). .Also on the front of the battery is a fuel gauge button indicating how much run time is left seeing as the drill wont slow down as its draining out of power. Another good thing is battery doesn't have a "memory" so you can charge it full anytime without having to exhaust all the drivers remaining power first, avoiding the frustration of having it die on me after a few minutes working away from the house. Good quick charging time. Great product I give it 5 Stars.
