The switch is more of a slide lock. You have to push down and slide forward. It will not let you simply slide the switch on. Once it is on it remains on until you move the switch back, the switch does not return on its own.
i do not think so it is a 4 1/2" grinder
As an electrician, I use mine primarily for cutting, so chose the lock-on.

I'm assuming because for some reason people love that paddle switch...me on the other hand can't stand it. I ordered my on HDepot and got it 2 or 3 days later delivered free to my house.
Slide Switch all day, hands down(IMO) The paddle makes it a bit combersome if your working material in one hand grinder in the other etc. Also with the slide switch you can adjust your hands on the grinder for tight spaces/ accuracy/control and not have to worry about keeping the paddle pressed.
