Questions & Answers

Will the surge work ok with 1.5 amp battiers for diy home repair. Also install wooden fence. Or should i use large amp battery.

Would the M12 fuel Gen2 be a better choice. I do most of my work later in the day so noise was a consideration
Asked by: Lawnman
For best results if possible use larger amp battery.

Has anyone had problems with the tool cutting off? Even on setting #3, it stops impacting until you release the trigger and then press the trigger again. After pressing the trigger again it only impacts for another second or so then cuts off again. Is this a "feature" to save the bolt or the tool? Or am I asking too much from the tool? Would be working in sheet metal or snugging bolts with a lock nut on the other side. Is it really only meant for like light wood work?
Asked by: dan
There too has an overheating protection in it, so if it gets too warm it will intermittently cut out. Or the lithium ion batteries are nearing the life and need to be recharged, if it is doing this with the batteries at full, then the heater overloads are either bad or the wing ones, if you contact Milwaukee they will have you send it to them and fix the problem.

I have a Milwaukee M18 Fuel brushless impact with the 1,2,3, and screw settings on it, what is the difference w/ surge?

Just curious if the surge is any different than the one I have
Asked by: Justin
The surge uses a hydraulic part to produce the impacts making it quieter and less vibration. The other impact drivers use a small hammer and anvil to produce the impacts causing more noise and vibration.

I used my DeWalt 1/4 impact daily as a small engine mechanic. Will the hydraulic be a better option?

Every review and comment I see is about contractor style work. I am interested in using it on the “automobile” side of things. To used on nuts and bolts. My dewalt is working fine, but I would like to take it back home to keep there. I have sampled a regular, brushless Milwaukee brushless impact and it worked great! I’m just asking about this “surge”.
Asked by: Jbucky
Absolutely. The hydraulic function of this drill is wear-less, quiet, and has longer torque duration versus small hammers typically delivered from a standard impact.

With the 2 amp batteries, it strikes the perfect balance between comfort, power and run time. My favorite thing about this driver is how quiet it runs. I really should wear hearing protection more often but if I pick up an impact driver to drive a couple of screws, I probably won't bother with it even though I know I should. And while I should probably use ear-pro with this driver, it certainly isn't doing much, if any, damage to my hearing when I use it without ear muffs or plugs. It's much quieter than my brushless M12 impact driver. I've had it for a month or so, built a shed with it and used it for a few other smaller projects and can't find anything I don't like about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Overhead projects and taks require this light in weight driver/drill...Fuel Surge is perfect This is my very first ever 1/4-inch hex driver and prior to this I had a 20 year old 1/4-inch keyed chuck variation which was showing both it's age and design flaws. Not only was my old cordless driver huge in size but over twice in weight. Differences between brushless and brush type designs, NiCad versus Lithium-Ion, and finally 12-volt versus 18-volt comparisons are amazing. I simply cannot find any flaw with this Milwaukee Surge driver/drill. This driver comes with a belt clip which I can finally put to use since it will no longer pull my pants down compared to my old 12-year old Porter Cable driver/drill. Same Drill also has a clip to store a spare hex bit. I especially like the Milwaukee M18 battery strategy whereby these M18 batteries and charging systems are manufactured to support over 125+ newly released cordless power tools ,cordless lighting, with more ingenious products coming out daily.

Now I know why, the small premium you pay for a well made American product pays off several times over and the fact that they give 5 year warranties even to construction workers using and abusing these tools day in and day out, means a tool like this will let a lifetime. The surge is way quieter and while on paper has less torque, in reality it is a sustained torque and actually outperforms standard impact drills with torques that are several times larger. Great product and very happy with it, I got a free hammer drill with this package so we’ll worth it especially with the 5.0 Amp hour batteries.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from awesome impact Completly out preforms my dewalt dcf888b xr impact plus is way quieter. Torque value milwalkee choose to advertise is sustained torque not peak and this value is higher than your average impact so performance tends to be between a drill and an inpact works awesome for running paddle bits and such but still very much preforms like a impact driver love it was my first milwaukee too since a horrible ecperience with dewalts customer service and couldnt be happier. Watch your belt clip! Mine fell off after a few days of use.

This thing is amazing, its quieter and has less vibrations than the everyday impact driver. I'm able to use this without it sounding like an automotive shop in my garage, you do sacrifice some top end performance but for everyday use this doesn't disappoint. In those situations where more power is needed I'll just grab the normal fuel impact, but otherwise I always start with this one.

I was nervous the surge would be too weak since the normal m18 is rated higher, it's not at all. So quiet and plenty strong to drive anything from drywall screws to 7in lags. My only complaint was that I wish it was an m12, and those come out late 2019 so I'm definitely buying one of those!

I used it several times and it packs a punch. Lots of power and very compact. Glad I purchased it. I still have a Makita drill driver that I like but it is somewhat big and heavy. It works good, but the Surge seems to be more handy to use.
