Milwaukee M18 FUEL ANGLER Auto-Fish Tape Powered Base and Fish Reel is another solid Milwaukee pr...
Milwaukee M18 FUEL ANGLER Auto-Fish Tape Powered Base and Fish Reel is another solid Milwaukee product. While it works fine out of the box, it clunked and banged during a few test retrievals - but I was able to resolve it. Overall, everything works are expected: the battery attaches/detaches as expected; the swappable reel is easily exchangeable; the forward/reverse mechanism and its motor runs like a champ. What I discovered was that if the line is returned to the drum without some tension, it apparently doesn't wind cleanly and the banging is the rhythmic banging of loose cable inside the drum . With gentle tension on the wire, I returned it into the drum. After that, all was fine. To Milwaukee's credit the tape never jammed inside the drum, hence no reduction of rating. You may not encounter this, but know the fix is simple. Milwaukee has another winner here, but you need to be pulling lots of wire to justify the cost. The auto extension of the tape (i.e., feeding it) down a conduit without any real effort is good use of battery power; retrieval is effortless (and with some moderate tension on the tape it coils perfectly.) The 120-foot 1/8" steel fish tape cartridge is included. Milwaukee also offers a 240-foot 1/8" steel and 100-foot non-conductive fish tape cartridges. To me, there are two minor product shortcomings. First, the unit will not stand up vertically on its own as there are no crafted legs into the round motor unit. Yes, you can try to balance it on the battery, but it will constantly fall over; laying it on its side is not always a good option on some job sites. Second, there is no easy way to hang the unit, as there are no locations to attach a carabiner other than to loop something through the grab handle. To rig up something on your own, just gets in the way of its operation. For those reasons, i took off one click on quality only; the tool still works perfectly. Included in the cardboard box is the motor unit, the 100-ft line cartridge, a fast charger, and 2 M18 batteries. There is no storage or transport box, which I have always like to protect expensive tools but they are becoming rare as an included item. If you pull lots of wire, then Milwaukee's Angler should be a serious consideration.

The Milwaukee Angler Fish Tape Kit (model 2873A-22) with 120’ steel tape is a solid auto-run powered fish tape system. The kit comes with a powered base, 120’ steel tape cartridge (1/8” diameter steel wire), 2 M18 Lithium batteries and an M18/M12 charger. The fish tape cartridges are interchangeable and replaceable - a 240’ steel tape cartridge and 100’ non-conductive tape cartridge are available. The auto-run powered feed and retract feature makes it easy to pull wire through long runs of conduit. The powered feed direction makes it easy to feed the steel tape through the conduit and is able to negotiate multiple turns and bends in the conduit. The powered retract direction develops enough torque to pull up to 4 10-AWG wires back through the conduit. The feed speed is a good constant speed for pulling wire, and the feed trigger allows for variable speed if you need a slower feed/retract rate. To make sure the steel tape cartridge didn’t have any binding issues, I fed the full 120’ of steel tape out in the open (not through conduit), and retracted the 120’ of tape back into into the cartridge - worked fine, no binding, jamming or skipping. The RED LITHIUM CP2.0 battery system is compatible with a full line up of Milwaukee battery powered tools (M18 FUEL - fits all M18 batteries). I was able to operate ~ 2 hours of pulling wire through conduit on a single battery charge. I was also pulling 2 pairs of 14 AWG speaker wire, 14 AWG jacketed, 2 pairs, about 125 feet through a maze under the subfloor, up through the wall and across the attic to several outdoor speakers. The powered angler fish tape definitely made the job go a lot smoother. I highly recommend the Milwaukee Angler Fish Tape system.

Your fingers and arms can rest. The system will feed and retract the fish at a good pace through conduit. The system should be close to the conduit opening, as it could twist or bend if it is away from the guiding conduit. The real best thing is that the system pulls the fish back into the reel with almost no effort. The system has reels that are 240 ft or 120 ft steel reels and a 100 ft composite (Non-conductive). The reels (cartridge) pop in and out of the driver set easily. There are three quick clamp latches to lock the cassette into the drive housing. Reported that it can pull multiple large gauge wires. 3 x 10ga wires 200 feet. I pulled 12/2 Romex through 80 ft EMT easily. The whole system is a little heavy with the 240 ft of 1/8 inch tape. The 100 or 120 foot would be much lighter. All M18 batteries will fit.

WORKS - Though I'd like to see some small improvem
IT WORKS. My shoulders love it. Issues: You need to have it close to the fitting as its pushing the fishtape, because if the head snags, the tape wants to kink on you. User needs more experience with it. Pulling was awesome, it lifted 98% of the weight for me. I pulled (3) #3 (1) #8 through 1" emt 60ft long, (1) 90º and one offset. to an LB. No helper, it pulled it no problem. Id like to see a place to mount a tether so you can hang it on a scissors lift or ladder. I had to lay it on the floor several times near the panel and I didn't like that. I'd like to hang it on the panel or the cart somehow. The head is welded which is ok, but on my other fish tapes I installed this head that has 2 stainless steel hoops on it, that fans out and doesn't allow the head to get stuck on anything going in. If you're using a kellem grip, Milwaukee hasn't come up with a way to attach it to the head. They still think we are savages peeling wire back for some reason... lol Joke, Please figure out a way I can attach a kellem grip to the head of this thing. What else.... I say get it, If you set up the spools correctly and no knots come up, it runs smooth. Just need to work with it more but overall I'm glad I have it and didn't need to go around and try and find a helper to help with this pull. 7-10 is my rating, I'm GLAD Milwaukee Designers and Engineers made it. These are some areas I would improve the unit on. Other than that Get it..... lol

          Stay Away
I am a Milwaukee JUNKIE!!! I LOVE MILWAUKEE. I say this because I am highly disappointed in the 240ft steel drum. I have owned this device for less than a month. I have replaced the drum twice. The third one is now jamming again. It is a shame because it could be a great device. maybe the nylon drum works better.

The tool broke on the first job. Got to Home Depot, returned and tried another one, because I was sure that was a bad luck on getting a defective tool. Got a second one, and it worked well for three weeks and it broke again. The technician who handles this tool is someone that looks care really well of this tools and truck. So I don't think that was an operator problem. I would not recommend this tool, unless it is your last option.
